//                             INTRODUCTION                             //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This game is based on the popular King of Fighters series by SNK and
programmed by TAKARA. This fighting game for the Nintendo Gameboy offers
no less than 15 characters plus 5 hidden characters.

If my maths does not fail me.
Total team combinations = (20*19*18) / 3!  + (all different characters)
                          (20*19) / 2!  + (2 different characters)
                          20 (1 character only)

which gives a grand total of 1350 different teams!!!!

"Nettou" means deadheat fighters. It was on the box all this while and I
never bother to look. :P

Also, the In-depth combo FAQ should be also be found aside with this
FAQ. Anyway, if you can't find the In-depth combo FAQ, send me an email.

//                          LIST OF CHARACTERS                          //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Kyo, Daimon, Terry, Andy, Ryo, Robert, Athena, Leona, Mai, Iori,
Mature, Geese, Krauser, Mr Big and Chizuru

Hidden characters includes...
Goenitz, Mr Karate, Orochi Iori (!!), Orochi Leona (!!), Kagura

I noticed that all characters looked younger/childisher than their
counterpart in the original series. But they are not "super deformed".

//                               CONTROLS                               //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It is important to know the tap and press method as it makes a great
deal to pulling off combos. (Yes, they do exist in this version.)

Special / Desperation moves are very easy to pull off. In fact the
control is very touchy. I sometimes pull off moves that I have no
intention of doing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Moves
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
light punch    -       tap B
heavy punch    -       press B
light kick     -       tap A
heavy kick     -       press A

knockdown      -       AB
charge         -       dn AB
back roll      -       bk AB
front roll     -       fw AB
dash           -       bk bk or fw fw
taunt          -       select

Hyper/low/middle/high jumps and air block exist.

Guard crash and counter also exist.
When you suffer a gurad crash during MAX, your MAX will be gone.

You can also do a back roll or front roll when blocking. However, Power
Bar must be maxed.

The length of your Maximum Bar depends on your life. The shorter your
life, the longer the Maximum Bar.

Also you can do a guard fall. After being hit up high, press AB together
and the direction you want to roll to. (works like a fast recovery
move). Works for certain normal/special/throw/DM/SDM moves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Moves
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surprisingly, no special/desperation/super desperation moves are lost in
this conversion.

Visit www.gamefaqs.com for complete listing.
(search under arcade section)

With help from Maximoff <[email protected]> on hidden characters
(as quoted directly...)

""Actually I found the moves are very similar to the arcade.

The Orochi guys are the same, except for a few exceptions...

Orochi Leona's 96 super instead of a V now gives an effect similar to
Mature's/Rugal's God press, and when done on the ground, the
D,DF,F,DF,D,DB,B,Punch motion gives a new super move where she dashes
across the screen and gives repeated moon slashers.

Iori's moves are also the same, but his Dark Thrust ends in a
motion similar to the deadly flower.

I'm not totally sure, but it seems Kagura is similar to Chizuru.

Goenitz is similar to his KOF96 incarnation (as said in the faq),
but unlike the NEO home version, his supers DO need the requirements.

Karate's moves...
D,DF,F,Punch- Double Haoken
F,DF,D,DB,B,Punch- Zanretsuken
B,DB,D,DF,F,Kick- Shorankyaku
D,DB,B,Kick- Hienshippukyaku
Super #1- F,B,DB,D,DF,F,Punch- Haoshikoken
Super #2- D,DF,F,DF,D,DB,B,Punch- Ryukoranbu (ends in a Zanretsuken,
takes off more than 1/2 damage, isn't stronger when done as a Super bar
desperation)""

To add to the above, Orochi Leona has a new move. Motion is
[hcb + punch], what this does is Leona sucks the life of the opponent
and transfers the energy to herself.

Kagura is a bit different from Chizuru. For start, her Fast Prey [hcb +
any button] seems to have a longer range. During her DM/SDM [hcb hcb +
kick], Kagura can perform special moves while Chizuru can't.

Plus Iori/Orochi Iori has a "hidden" SDM.

I have added comments if necessary.

Mateus Freire de L. e Souza <[email protected]> has sent me the
following (as quoted directly from him)
(Mateus, are you related to Thiago Freire?)

""If you end the game with certain teams, the ending sequence will be
followed by an extra fight between the team members. Notice that all of
those teams' characters a related somehow. Here is the list of special
teams:
Kyo, Iori, Chizuru (Weapons of God)    | Kyo & Chizuru X Orochi Iori
Iori, Mature, Leona (Orochi Assassins) | Iori & Mature X Orochi Leona
Terry, Andy, Geese (Vendetta Team)     | Terry & Andy X Geese
Ryo, Robert, Mr. Big (Art of Fighting) | Ryo & Robert X Big
Geese, Krauser, Big (Villians Team)    | Krauser & Big X Geese

The character(s) that you pick on each fight will depend of who won the
fight against Goenitz. For example: if Leona defeats Goenitz (Orochi
Assassins team), she will fight against Iori and Mature as Orochi Leona.
If Iori or Mature defeats Goenitz, they will fight as team agaist Leona.
There is a team which have a different extra fight: if you pick Kyo,
Terry and Ryo in the same team, the character that defeated Goenitz
fights against the two other members for the right of been the best SNK
hero! Pretty Tough, huh?""

All right! My code finally appears in www.segasages.com. ;)
To confirm the trick works, at the character select, you will notice
that the 1P box is replaced by a COM box.

>   Fight Mr. Karate
>          from Thiago Freire

Not really true, I managed to battle Mr Karate in Hard mode but with
continues. You just have to wait for the credits to scroll through.

>   Hidden Ending
>          from Wong Ka Ki ([email protected])
>          Use Mr. Big, Geese and Krauser vs. Iroi, Chizuru and Kyo as

Don't know what this means. Anyone can confirm this trick? I suspect
it's similar to the bonus fights.

>   Play as Crazy Iroi/Leona
>          from Wong Ka Ki ([email protected])

Right, also known as Orochi Iori/Leona. Well.... actually
Iori' / Leona'.

>   Play as Goenitz
>          from [email protected]
>          Press Select three times at the Takara logo.

Also defeat the game in normal mode, wait for the credits to finish and
the code will be revealed to you.

>   Play as Mr. Karate
>          from [email protected]

After you manage to meet Mr Karate, whether you win or lose against
him, the code will be revealed to you.

>   Play as Same Player
>          from [email protected]
>          To use the same character in Team Play, do this. At the

Pressing A + B + Select at the TAKARA logo has another purpose, it
releases the Scorcher Mode. Basically Scorcher Mode is a hyper-up
version.
More on this later.....

>   Random Character Select
>          from Yinchin Chan

Very, very useless. Can't play the game at all because you have to keep
pressing select. *blah*

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
//                             SCORCHER MODE                            //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

By pressing AB Select at TAKARA logo, the game switches to a sort of
hyper up version ala the Scorcher Mode.

- special HEAVY moves register more hits when Power Bar at max
- desperation moves done without Power Bar at max
- super desperation moves done with Power Bar at max
- if life flashing and Power Bar at max, certain characters have
  extra super desperation moves (!). Otherwise, characters perform
  super desperation.

For example Terry's power geyser
none - 1 hit
Power Bar at max - 3 hits
Power Bar at max and life flashing - 15+ hits (!!)

So far, it seems that only Terry has a ESDM.

Also Athena's crystal shoot can grow up to few times the normal size.
To do it, hold the crystal shoot and rotate the direction pad
anti-clockwise many times when facing right or clockwise when facing
left.

As strange as it seemed, it's possible to reflect projectiles or DM/SDM
projectiles by holding down and throwing light punches! Be careful,
opponent can reflect back the projectiles. (!!)

Also you can reflect Chizuru's Shadow Walker i.e. her 2nd DM/SDM.
[hcb hcb + kick]

In Scorcher Mode, Athena's teleport move works in mid-air.
Also, characters that have special moves done in mid-air, the moves'
range is very different from normal mode. In Scorcher Mode, the higher
you perform the air moves, the greater the range.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
//                        GAMEBOY KOF 96 GALLERY                        //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

All strange/funny things are recorded here. Enjoy!

If Geese and Terry are fighting, Geese will do a different starting
pose.

If Iori and Kyo are fighting, both will have different starting pose.

In Scorcher Mode and in Hard mode, use Athena when facing Goenitz.
Do and hold the crystal shoot and make it huge in MID-AIR. If lucky,
you will see Goenitz teleporting up and up and out of the screen.
Goenitz will reappear when you release the crystal shoot. Keep trying,
it'll bound to happen.

Mr Big's DM/SDM can sometime fire out blanks. In other words, Mr Big
will perform his DM/SDM but there will not be any animation of the
electric blast. (Happens only Scorcher Mode)

Mr Big's Crazy Drum [punch repeatly] can sometime freeze in motion. You
can hear the sound of the move but Mr Big will be in freeze animation.
If you are in the way of the attack, no damage is done.

Both characters are facing the same direction but opponent is running
into corner. Looks very strange. After awhile, opponent stops running
and both characters faced each other. To do this, run toward opponent,
make sure that opponent jumps over you as you run. Don't let go of the
direction pad.

During the "intermission" before fighting Goenitz, keep pressing start
button very quickly. You will notice that some letters is "dropped".
For example, "Rugal" will sometime disply as "R gal" etc......

Ohhh... and Iori's "hidden" SDM. It's in the game and I can't believe
that TAKARA actually put this in. OK, it's something like this....
Iori does his SDM, SDM connects but somehow opponent is knocked off his
attack. Iori goes down on his knees, looks back at you. AND A QUESTION
MARK APPEARS OVER HIS HEAD!!!!!! Then turns back his head and pounds the
ground many times. Yup! It's true. See my In-depth combo FAQ for more
information on this.

Using Athena's [hcb + kick] can reflect projectiles and Chizuru's Shadow
Walker in Normal/Scorcher Mode.

Mai and Athena can both do a wall jump. To do this, jump up to a wall
and press up and the direction away from the wall.

Sound effect for Geese's [hcb + punch] is different from Player and
Computer.

Goenitz's DM [hcb hcb + punch] can be done without power bar at MAX or
life flashing in Normal Mode.

I manage to crash the game using Leona. Here's what happened. I did her
DM and Chizuru countered it. Both were knocked down, suffered damage and
got up. But Chizuru life meter is empty and she is still standing up. KO
message appears followed by "YOU WIN". Then the lower 3/4 of screen
turns dark and the power meters appears about 1/4 down from the top of
the screen. The game hangs. This happens twice and both time it's Leona
vs Chizuru.

OK, I managed to freeze the game using Leona in a much easier way. Do
her [hold bk, fw + heavy punch]. Make sure the opponent blocks and will
be KOed (i.e. low life meter). While opponent is blocking, walk towards
opponent and try to do a throw. The game will only freeze if opponent
counters the throw. It's kinda hard at first but worth the trouble.

Leona's DM/SDM can sometimes freeze an opponent. I don't really know the
actually conditions but it usually happens when opponent counters
Leona's DM/SDM or both doing DM/SDM at the same time and cancel each
other out.

Pause the game when the time almost reaches zero, using the slow motion
code, press select repeated until time is over. Provided that opponent
has not KOed, the computer controlled opponent will still attack. Of
course, you must still be pressing select repeated all the time. You
still can attack BUT you must do the special moves motion many times and
still be pressing select repeatedly. (Kinda having to use three hands.)

You can also play against Orochi Iori/Leona and Kagura (well not all of
them) in the first match in team battle  mode. To do this, do the select
x20 code. This makes all hidden characters available. Choose team battle
mode game and as the select screen comes up, quickly do the random
select code (press start and A). If lucky, one of the computer-
controlled characters will be a hidden character. If luckier, the first
character is a hidden one, the stage you fight against the computer will
be the last stage. I have done this and it took quite some time. But
again it's worth it.

Activating the codes in the game, make letters/numbers appear at the
bottom of the option screen.
Here's all the letters/numbers

Codes                                      message
-----                                      -------
select + AB                                DIPSW - 28
select x 3                                 DIPSW - 40
select + AB  and select x 3                DIPSW - 68
select x 3 and select x 20                 DIPSW - 28
select + AB, select x 3 and select x 20    DIPSW - 28

//                              CONCLUSION                              //
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Only the Japanese version is out, no American version is planned as far
as I know. If you manage to find this little gem, buy it!

I have got mails asking where to get this game. If your area sells
illegal multi-games carts, there is a good chance that this game is in
there. However, be warned, don't pay a high price for these carts.
Also if your retail stores import games, try asking them to bring in one
for you.

However, it's not a substitute for the original version but it has
certainly captured the feel and gameplay of the series.

It's one of the finest fighting game for the Gameboy. It certainly put
other 16 bits or even some 32 bits fighting games to shame. A well worth
investment.

Thank you, TAKARA.
