-1. Introduction-
-----------------
Well this game is getting on quite a bit these days but it is still one of
the most fun games to play on the Game Boy. It's easy to pick up and play.
I have decided to write this to give tips and advice in to how best play
game. There is not a lot this game as it was made at the very start of the
Game Boys life but it's still a pretty tough game that requires quite a bit
of practice to become very good at. Also i have noticed this is the model
they used for Super Tennis for the SNES i think which plays very similar.

Version 1.3
30/9/00 -Ran the spell checker over it and found way to many mistakes, so
now this FAQ should be done.
-------------
-3. Controls-
-------------
The controls are pretty simple for this game but here they are
A: Serve
Normal Court Shot
B: Top Spin Serve
Lob Court Shot
Start: Select Mode Of Game Play
Select: Scroll Through Game Play Options
-------------------
-4. Angle The Ball-
-------------------
Through out the FAQ I refer to angling the ball to the LEFT or RIGHT. All
I am referring to is pressing down on the D-Pad LEFT or RIGHT just as you
hit the ball. This will hit the ball to the LEFT or RIGHT instead of going
in a straight line from where you are standing.
Example: This is a diagram of your oppositions side of the court and the
effect that angling can have.
********* *: Court Layout
* * 8: Net
*$ # &* @: You
********* #: Hitting Ball Without Angle
* * * &: Hitting Ball With Angle To Right
* * * $: Hitting Ball With Angle To Left

This isn't the clearest diagram to show you the effect of ANGLING the ball.
But you should get the idea. It allows you to open up the court and hit
winners without relying on the computer player to make a mistake(which
rarely
happens).
This technique is very important as it is the only way you will win points
in a rally. If you get the computer opposition running all over the court
it will allow you to get an open court to finish them off in.
=ANGLING BALL TO THE RIGHT=
Use normal A button hit, just as you connect PRESS RIGHT ON THE D-PAD.
=ANGLING BALL TO THE LEFT=
Use normal A button hit, just as you connect PRESS LEFT ON THE D-PAD.
---------------------------
-5. General Tactics To Win-
---------------------------
Tennis on the Game Boy has 4 different difficulty levels on it each one
being a little tougher than the last. I will try and break the different
levels down and suggest the best strategies to beat each one with
First of all the major difference in each level is the game gets a little
bit faster. The balls are hit harder and the computer player runs a bit
faster than on the previous level.
Also remember to never over commit yourself to running to a spot on the
court. The computer player will just hit the ball straight back to where
you came from. This will give you no chance of getting the ball back to
the computer player.
=============
First Method
=============
Step 1. Serve the ball where you like, you may ace them if your lucky.
Step 2. Just as the computer player is about to hit the ball run diagonally
in towards the net. As you are running in the computer player will hit the
ball in line with you. Now just use an angled shot lefty or right away
from the computer player.
Step 3. You should see the ball go straight past the computer and win the
point. If for some reason the computer player got to the ball you should
be able to angle the ball away from the computer again and it will win you
the point.
NOTE: You should be able to use this method against almost all the different
difficulty levels it's all about timing your run towards the net. If you
are playing a level 4 computer player then if you move to soon he will smash
the ball back down the line and you will have no chance of getting to it.
------------
-6. Serving-
------------
This is one part of the game which could win you matches. It's all about
placing it in the right part of the box so that you have the opposition
out of place to return the ball a second time.
=SERVING RIGHT TO LEFT=
Use a normal A hit and angle it heavily to the left, just as you
hit the ball. The ball should just drop in just over the other side of the
net on the far side if the box. You may fault this many times but with
practice you should be able to ACE the opposition. If not ACE them then
open up the whole court so that you can put the ball away when they return
your serve.
=DOWN THE LINE=
Use a normal A hit but angle it heavily to the left so the ball goes
straight down the line and has the opposition reaching right across in
court.
This isn't the best way or getting an ACE but it allows you to take control
of the net. But on the odd occasion you will ACE the computer with ease.
-----------------
-Return Of Serve-
-----------------
Probably the most annoying and most frustrating part of the game on higher
difficulty levels. You manage to return the ball but only to have it belted
back past you on the far side of the court. Here are a few tips to help you
beat the computer at it's own game.
=DOWN THE LINE=
This is by far the most low percentage shot in the game. Simply fire the
ball back down the line that you are standing on. If you get it in the
computer has no hope of getting top it. BUT 80% of the time you will miss
the shot and it will fly out of court. With practice though it is possible
to get them in regularly.
Remember to take a step or 2 across to the opposite side that you want to
hit the ball down. This allows you to give yourself a bit of room to hit
the ball in.
=BACK ACROSS COURT=
When you go to return the serve hit it back to the computer player and then
approach the net as the computer player goes to hit the ball and then it
should leave the whole court open for you to finish the point off in.
-----------------------------------
-7. Advanced Tactics: Levels 3 & 4-
-----------------------------------
I have decided to create this section as all the above techniques I have
listed can be executed easily on levels 1 & 2. But on levels 3 & 4 the
computer opponent is much smarter and it can be tough to pull off as
effectively.
=IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER=
The computer player will always beat you if you try and attack the net
to soon. Sit back until the computer player has hit the ball and then
attack the ball. Because it is hard to chase down balls in levels 3 &
4 you need to think a little more about where you move to in the court.
So considering the above information this what looks simple tennis game
actually involves a little bit of thinking.
Both level 3 & 4 are hard to beat and each play slightly different to the
other. This must be taken into consideration if you ever want to win.
Even though I'm writing this guide I am yet to beat level 4. I think I
have the theory right but getting it all together is the problem. As
the computer player is so unpredictable and moves so quickly.
=Level 3 Tactics=
=On Serve=
IN PLAY
The computer player loves swooping in on the net once it gains the upper
hand in the rally. So try and stick back to the base line and work your
way up to the net. But you will need to predict which way the computer
player is going to hit the ball. When they take control of the net the
point is usually finished quickly to their favor. BE WARRY OF THIS.
SERVEING
When serving RIGHT to LEFT you can get the opposition out of play easily.
First serve the ball with a little angle to the LEFT on the D-Pad. This
will have the ball landing deep in the box and forcing the opposition
out of court. Now just as the opposition hits the ball charge to the net
meet it and angle the ball away to the RIGHT hand side of court. If done
correctly the opposition will have not chance of getting to it. So you can
win the point easily.
Now when serving LEFT to RIGHT you can ACE the opposition every time if
done correctly. Once you toss the ball up wait for it to get level with
head and then hit it again adding a little bit of angle to the LEFT. Tap
LEFT just as you connect with the ball and then release just as quickly.
If all is done right you will ACE the opposition. If you mess it up it
will be a FAULT so don't worry about it being returned.
=When Receiving=
The opposition tends to serve the ball very unpredictably. The opposition
serve with quite a bit of pace to be mindful when your going to swing. Try
and return the ball back across court to them and they usually sit back on
the base line. But if you stick to your base line they will quickly work
there way to the net. This can get you into a lot of trouble so try and
work your way to the net to not staying to far back or the opposition will
smash winner after winner past you.
I have noticed that some times if you return the ball using a B button hit
they miss it all together when they go to return it. I returned the ball
like
this 4 times and 3 times the opposition missed the ball when they looked
like
returning it easily. So keep this is mind and try it every so often.
Never in a rally use a Loopy B button hit. This just sets the ball up to
be put away by the opposition every time. As yet I haven’t found a use for
the B button hit except for the technique listed above.
Now if you take the above tips into your game play you should have a fair
chance at beating the opposition. It will take some practice to get it
right but eventually you will notice your holding your serve and breaking
their serve more often.
=Level 4 Tactics=
=On Serve=
IN PLAY
The opposition on Level 4 is very fast around the court and will even
manage to hit the ones that hit the top of the net back to you. Just try
and keep them away from the net and keep hitting it back to them until
they open the court up for you. But if you use the technique below then
you wont have to worry about much IN PLAY action.
SERVING
An easy way to win points when you are serving is to do the following.
First serve the ball with ANGLE to the LEFT if you are serving RIGHT to
LEFT, or ANGLE RIGHT if serving LEFT to RIGHT. Now use a B button serve,
this will loop it up. Now charge at the net diagonally towards the
opposition. 9 times out of 10 they will hit the ball straight to you and
you just need to ANGLE the ball away to the opposite side of the court.
But remember you need quick reflexes to pull this off but a little practice
and you should be right. Occasionally the opposition will loop the ball
back over your head and you will have no chance to return it. Don't worry
if this happens you'll still win that game using this technique.
=When Recieveing=
IN PLAY
If you attack to the net to early the Level 4 opposition will Lob the ball
over your head. If you’re out of place then you will loose the point. The
beast way to know when to attack is when the opposition is about to hit the
ball. They will hit is back cross court to you and you can usually put it
away with ease.
So the key thing to remember is to not attack the net to quickly if they
are yet to make a shot. Also the opposition can move a lot faster than you
so you won't be able to chase down half the balls the opposition can.
RETURNING SERVE
The opposition moves around the base line quickly when aiming there serve
so be prepared to make quick adjustments before they serve. Or you will
be ACED many times. It can be tough to keep up sometimes but you should
get good at reading where the serve will go.
The same B return hit technique used against Level 3 opposition will work
here again so use that occasionally. It doesn't have the same strike rate
as in Level 3 but worth ago.
-----------
-8. Cheats-
-----------
I think with out the aid of a game shark there is only the one cheat for
this game which is as follows.
WIN POINT ON SERVE EASILY
Toss the ball up as normal then as it reaches its peak swing your racket
and you should miss the ball. Then after you have missed it run underneath
the ball and it should bounce up and down on the spot. For some reason the
game will think you won the point and credit you with the point. So now
you can just do that 4 times when serving to win your service games easily.
--------------------
-9. Game Geni Codes-
--------------------
I do not have a Game Geni for the Game Boy so I don't know if they work.
But I got them off GameSages.com web site and I would think they are
reliable codes.
Game Genie Codes
