--Game Modes--

1 Player
Here its you vs the cpu. Once you choose a team out of the 12 teams available you will be placed
against a random team. You play 7 weekly games plus 3 playoff games and the tecmo bowl game. It's
like a single elimination tournament where you must compete against the other 11 opponents. Each
team you face is chosen by random. There is also a password feature that you can use to continue
your long quest for the tecmo bowl. The passwords are given to you after each game.

2 Player
In this mode it's you against another human controlled players. Bring a friend over and teach
him some old school football lessons.

Coach
This mode allows you to be somewhat of a coach for your team. Take on a friend where you call all
the plays and the cpu tries to execute them. There is no real gameplay involved here just
choosing the plays.

--Key Features in the Game--

Certain "TECMO BOWL" playing rules may differ slightly from professional
football rules.

Clock Stops
The clock in this football game always stops at the end of each play. You don't have to go out
of bounce or throw an incomplete pass to stop the clock. The clock stops at the end of each play
Also, there is no play clock and the time doesn't start until the ball is snaped. Therefore,
there is no timeout feature in this game since the clock stops at the end of each play.

No Fumbles?!?
Remember no fumbles can occur in this video game. So if you got a lead in the game running the
ball is a very safe way to go. You can't turn the ball over on a run.

No substitutions or Injuries
Note there is no substitutions or injuries in the game. Don't worry bout taking some huge blows.
The players you have at the start of the game will be there throughout the whole game.

Not Touchbacks On Kickoffs
There is no touchbacks during kick offs. Any tackles in the endzone during kickoffs will result
in a safety. The only touchbacks that occur is on punts that reach the endzone or go over the
endzone.

No Onside Kicks
There is no onside kicks period. A short kick off will place the ball right into the hands of the
opposing team. Also. during kick offs the game clock doesn't stop. The clock wines down before
the player gets the ball. Once the ball is in the air the clock will be active. Saving valuable
time is the only reason that you should attempt any short kick offs.

--Tips--

QB in Motion
It's not a good idea to just try and stay in the pocket as you soon will find out that the line
breaks right away. Keep the QB in motion as you look for the open reciever. Aligning your QB with
the intended reciever will get the ball to be thrown perfectly towards him. Plus, you will have
a better chance to attempt a QB sneak if all recievers are covered. In addition, it will give
the ball less time to get to the reciever resulting in less chances of a interception. ALso, Look
out for the icon controlled player on the field. Even if you have an open reciever the icon
player can get to the attended reciever and make a pick. You must be extra cautious against
human controlled opponents. If all fails just throw the deep ball. As all quaterbacks are capable
of throwing the ball from one end of the field to the other if given the right amount of time.

Use Your Blocker
Don't always try to sprint off for the endzone. If you got some blockers use them as a shield to
block the incoming defenders and then take off behind them. Keep in mind though that sometimes
your blocker will just get run over. But in most cases you are better off waiting for your
blocks.

Running the Ball
Always keep pressing the A buttong as your hitting power will be more effective. You can run
through defenders and quickly break through grapplings. Look for any holes you can get in your
line.

Out in the Open
Once you make it past all the defenders, get on your horse as its off to the races. Keep going
straight until defenders catch up behind you then start using the dodging tactic. Dodge the
diving defenders by moving in different directions. Also, keep pressing the A button to break
any grappling attempts.

Keep an Eye On the QB
Your eyes should be focused on the QB as soon as he hikes the ball. Once you see that its a pass
don't just go back for the deep ball. A shotgun formation doesn't allways mean that the QB will
pass the ball. Sometimes a QB like Elway will try the sneak to get the first down yardage or more.
It can be a pain sometimes to defend this technique in the redzone. However, don't always think
he is scrambling once you see the QB running forward. SOmetimes the CPU will throw the ball once
he sees you rushing towards him. Play conservative and once he passes the scrimage line nail him
into tommorrow.

Bad Accuracy
If your QB is moving while you try to throw the ball it may result in some wild passes. Also, the
timing of the throws is real important as when a reciever does a cut through the middle you will
need to release the ball before he gets to close to the sidleines or it will go out of bounds.
Or if you get enough time just wait for the reciever to stop and then zip it in.

Too much Confidence
When it gets down to 3rd down and long don't always expect a deep throw. The CPU will sometimes
try to sneak a run in which will leave you in the dust. A simple run up the middle against a
passing defensive play can be as effective as a deep bomb.

Escaping the Blitz
If the defense has chosen the same play you picked it will result in a blitz. Sometimes you can
avoid them and get past the tackles. When running the ball you can sometimes get in between the
defenders and get passed the rush. Also, trying to run back a few yards and then dodging your way
in can get passed a blitz. However, you can lose a lot of yards if you can't escape the blitz.
Sometimes you may just want to run forward and try to get back to the line of scrimage. When
doing a pass play don't force anything in the air. A rushed throw is never a good way to get
passed a blitz. A good option to go to on a blitz pass is to go to the reciever that is crossing
in the middle. These passing plays are very difficult to intercept and almost always get passed
a blitz.

Time your Diving Tackles
If you are going to dive at the ball carrier just make sure you time it correctly. A missing dive
can allow a huge gain for your opponent. However, a diving tackle will tackle any player no
matter what his strength is.

Special Teams

Kick Offs
Well practice is the best way to get this part of the game right. You will be able to get
powerful kicks in no time. Sometimes you may want to not kick it at its maximum range and
be more safe with a decent kick. Don't worry about any touchback as there is none in the game.
The only way to get a touch back is to punt the ball in or over the endzone. There is no onside
kicks so there really is no use of kicking short kicks. The only time you might want to use the
short kick tactics is when your in need of the time clock. As kickoff waste the most deal of time
during a single play. Short kicks can get your defense on the field real quick. However, be aware
of a dangerous kick return. On defense try to position your player in between the opponent's
players. Keep pressing the A button to break through any grapples on your way down the field. Try
to avoid any miss tackles. The knock downs can be quite aggravating at times but sometime all you
need is that second to slow down the runner. Try not to over run the play carrier as well.

Kick Off Returns
FIrst of all note that there is no touchbacks so don't look for a kneel in the endzone. Once
the kick off occurs get ready for a return. Try to stay with your blockers ahead of you. A
couple miss tackles can get you ahead of the pack where its off to the races.

Punting
Punting the ball is the same as kick off and field goals. The punters in the game can really get
a good distance on the ball. If you want to play field position then punting the ball can get the
ball on the opposite side in a good position. If you want to keep the ball inside the opponents
20 yardline you will need to keep the ball away from the endzone as touchbacks automatically
occur when the ball reaches the endzone. Shortening up on the kick meter will get the ball inside
the 20 yard line. Sometimes you may need to shorten your kicks if a defender gets in real quick
to block the punt. The best way of not getting punt blocks is to kick the ball of the first
charge up. The farthest a punt can go is from 80-85 yards.

Punt Returns
Unlike the Kick Offs, in a punt return once the ball reaches the endzone or goes over the endzone
the player will automatically get a touchback. Punt Returns are much more difficult than a kick
off return as you dont have much blockings infront of you. Plus the defensive players can really
get down the field real quick. Try running in one direction and then switching to the other side.
Going back a couple yards on a return can sometimes help you against those fast defensemen.

Field Goals/Extra Points
Kicking the ball through the the posts shouldn't be a problem. Your kicks will never shank to the
left or right of the goal posts. All you need to concentrate is on the power of the kicks. Most
Kickers can easily nail field goals from the 40 yardline or further! The only other factor in
the kicks besides getting the right range is the ability of the defender to block the kicks.
Some teams can get in real quick to block the field goals/extra points so be aware of that. When
you are kicking the extra points you only need to fill the meter no more than 1/4 of power. Extra
points need very little kicking power so don't wait all day or it might get blocked. But kicking
it too light will cause misses as well so no your range of power needed in the kick.

Blocking Field Goals
You can easily get in to make an atempt of blocking kicks. The best way is to pick a FS that
is right behind the lineman or the SS that is farthest back. These players are the fastest on
the special teams and dont have to get through the offensive line. You just need to pick one of
these players and run diagnally right into the kick. The 2 Lineman infront of the center are
great choices as well. Just right diagnally between the center until you reach the place kicker.
Make a dive right in front of the placement kicker to get a clean block. Lawrence Taylor of the
New York team can get in there really fast and almost always cause a block.

--Team's Strengths/Weaknesses--

Indianapolis- THey have the best kicker in the game. Biassucci is almost always perfect in field
goal attempts.  Although their passing game aint so great they do have a solid running back.
Dickerson is one of the top runners in the game next to the great Walter Payton. The running
game itself should be just enough yards for biassucci to nail those easy field goals.

Miami- They do carry a weak defense but their impressive offensive scoring can put them back in
the game in no time. Marino is the main focus on the Miami offense and he truly has a cannon of
an arm. With three passing plays it make this passing offense even harder to stop.

Cleveland- If your looking for a powerful offensive team then don't look no further than
Cleveland. This team can move the ball down field in both their ground and aireal attacks. Look
for Mack and Kosar to light it up in Cleveland. Also, their defense combines for a total of 16
interceptions!

Denver- Two words sums this team up. John Elway. Not only is he very dangerous in his passing
game but he can also sneak some yards with his running speed. However, their defense is a toss
up.

Seattle- Here if a very underated team in the game but be aware cause they can slip one by.
Largent is the main go to guy on Seattle's offense. Look out cause he can break a huge game
anytime. His great speed and catching ability gives Krieg an easy target.

Los Angeles- This team can really pound the ball down a teams throat with their running game.
They dont just carry one great running back but two. This make them even more vicious on the
field as they can switch between Jackson and Allen throughout the game. Also, if that wasn't
enough take a good look at their monstrous defense. Probably one of the top team in the game.

Washington- This team is a balanced team. Washington is provided with two great options to go
to in the passing game. Both of the recievers, Clark and Sanders combine for a total of over
150 receptions on the season. This prevents teams from double covering one side of the field.

San Francisco- This team has many many secret weapons that not even the Pentagon might be able
to stop. Two great stars on the team that can work with each other real well. Montana to Rice
perform many scoring drives all game long. And you can not forget their powerful defensive back
in Ronnie Lott!

Dallas- This team has one of the greatest franchise in the game. They are coming off a tough
season but look for them to bounce right back to the top once again. The team has a huge
addition into their running game with Heshal Walker. Don't let him get loose or it will get ugly
real quick.

New York- With Lawrence Taylor on the field this team forms one of the most deadliest defense
in the game. Not only that he can be a serious threat on special teams as well with his great
size and speed. Look for Taylor to block numerous field goal tries. Plus, Phil Simms is known to
carry this team on his shoulders.

Chicago- Chicago holds the greatest defense in the game period! Singletary and McMicheal are a
quarterbacks worst nightmare. And on offense they carry one of the greatest running backs to
ever play the game of football. With Walter Payton's running ability you should even think about
atempting any passing plays.

Minnesota- Minnesota's key superstar, Carter provides them with great yardage through the air
plus some great field positions in his kick returns. If Kramer is given time he can deliver
throws from one end of the field to the other and resulting six points on the scoreboard. Plus,
LT Irwin can provide some huge holes for the powerful running back, Nelson.

--Keys To Victory--
Your best option on offense is to stick with the running game. If you can establish a good
running game then 9 out of 10 you will come out victorious. As running plays are more safer since
you can't turn the ball over. Also, if you do pass the ball try not to force any passes as
interceptions occur a lot more frequently. On defense it is also good to focus on stopping the
run. Running plays can be much more deadly than passes. Even if its 3rd down and long, a sneaky
running play can open up for a huge gain. Plus, defense plays stopping the run put more pressure
on the quarterback. Even though more receivers will be open on this type of defense it will also
give you more chances of intercepting a pass.
