Hello and welcome to my Paperboy FAQ for the Sega Master System version of the
game. Paperboy was a very popular franchise back in the 80s/early 90s so like
most kids then, I played it. It's still a pretty fun game now, though in a
nostalgic and retro sense more than in a deep and involving gameplay sense. I
suspect that this version is a little more limited than the full arcade
version.
The actual (only) reason that I'm writing this guide is to help out with the
SMS Completion Project on GameFAQs. Basically a group of writers have got
together and we are trying to write a complete FAQ for every Master System
game. For more on this and all the great work being done, follow one (or both)
of these links:

Just before I start for real, if you want to see any more of my work, it can
be found here:

Thanks for stopping by! Hopefully this FAQ is of some use to you.

EASY STREET: There are few enemies, so you have a relatively clear route.
Even if you do come across an enemy, they usually appear on their
own.
Points
¯¯¯¯¯¯
Bundle - 100
Dog - 100
Door Delivery - 100
Jump - 200
Mailbox - 250
Target - 100
Trike - 100
Window - 100
MIDDLE ROAD: There enemies are more frequent now and they often appear in
pairs or even threes. They often come at you faster, particularly
the unicycle and the trike. Enemies such as the driller and the
stereo are moved to more awkward positions, usually on the
sidewalk. The points are all doubled on Middle Road.
HARD WAY : Enemies now appear in groups ranging from two to four. This can
be difficult to navigate especially if a bunch of B-Boys line the
path. Points are trebled on Hard Way.

• Before you start your first round, you will be shown which houses have a
paper subscription. I assume that you are familiar with the role of a
paperboy? For those of you who are not, you need to deliver a paper to the
houses with subscriptions.
• If this specific paper round was anything like the one I had as a kid, it
would be boring as hell. That's why there are numerous obstacles and enemies
that will try to knock you off your bike and stop you in your quest to make
sure people have something to read whilst they are on the toilet.
• Should you fall of your bike, you will lose a life. Your total number of
is represented by the yellow caps in the bottom right corner. You have a
total of four lives.
• Only houses with mailboxes outside are subscribers. To deliver the paper,
either throw it against the front door or throw it into the mailbox (which
will earn you more points). Slowing down will make it easier to hit the
mailboxes. You should note that the first house (number 100) does not have a
box, so you need to hit the doorstep.
• The houses of colour (e.g. blue, yellow etc) are all subscribers. Any houses
that are black are non-subscribers.
• The houses that are not subscribers can be ignored. However, you can take
the opportunity to throw a paper throw their window. Also this may get you
arrested in the real world, in Paperboy you will be rewarded with points!
• Should you miss a subscriber, or if you throw a paper through their window,
they will cancel their subscription for the next day.
• If you run out of papers, you can collect extra bundles by running over
them.
They can be found lying in the street. You can hold a total of ten
papers and picking up a bundle will replenish all of them. You can see how
many papers you have left by looking in the bottom right corner of the
screen.
• Once you reach the end of the street, you will move onto the training
course. On here, you can earn some bonus points (like you care). Hit the
targets and ride over the jumps. If you fall off, run out of time, or reach
the end of the course, the day will end, but you won't lose a life.
• If you go over a jump on the training course, you will replenish all of
your papers.
• At the end of the day, you will be shown those who have subscribed for the
next day. More often than not, you will have lost a subscriber or two
(unless you are actually good at this game).
• If you managed to deliver a paper to every subscriber, you will be rewarded
by picking up a single new subscriber. Result! Or something...
• There are a total of seven days (coincidentally there are seven days in a
week) that you need to complete. Each day will become progressively more
difficult with more and more obstacles and more and more ruthless enemies.
• If you drive right along the kirb, fewer enemies will be able to line up
with you to hit you (other than ones that come from the side). This is
particularly useful for avoiding unicyclists. However, that's not to say
that they won't get you, it just won't happen as often.
• Try to stick to the sidewalk as much as possible. Driving on the road means
1) you will be far away from the mailboxes and 2) you can't see the enemies
and obstacles that are coming up. So stick to the path.
• Sometimes you will see mounds of dirt in front of a grate. If you run into
these at speed, you will clear the grate.
• If you come to a difficult place where there are a lot of obstacles, slow
the bike down so you can navigate better.
• As you approach a junction, slow down so that you can see what is coming
(didn't your mother tell you to look left and right?).
H e a d l i n e s
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• Lose all your lives or subscribers: "Paperboy Calls it Quits!"
• Complete all seven deliveries: "Amazing Paperboy Delivers!"

B-BOY : The B-Boy breakdancer will be positioned awkwardly on the
sidewalk. He won't move to attack you but you will have to
navigate around him. This becomes more difficult when there are
two or three of them together. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
CAR : As you approach a crossing in the road, sometimes you will see a
car on the left. The best thing to do is to slow the bike right
down. This should give you time to think. With a bit of luck the
car will pass in front of you. However, there are times when you
will need to speed in front of it to avoid being hit.
FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
DOG : The dog will wait for you to approach on the left hand side of the
screen. As you near it, it will run at you and try to knock you
off of your bike. You should speed up, so that it can't catch you.
If you judge it right, you can throw a paper at the dog to stop
it. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
DRILLER : A workman with a pnuematic drill. He just stays in a single spot,
in the middle of the road. As long as you don't crash into him,
he won't cause you much trouble. On Middle Road, you may find
that he moves onto the sidewalk. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
DEATH : Yup, the Grim Reaper complete with scythe and everything. He will
just move from the left and block your path. He don't appear all
that often, so savour it. FIRST APPEARANCE: Hard Way
GRATE : Grates appear at the side of the road. Running over them will
cause you to fall off of your bike. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
LAWNMOWER : The red lawnmower merely sticks to the grass outside it's house.
(RED) You almost never come into contact with these, because you have no
reason to ride on the grass. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
LAWNMOWER : The yellow lawnmower acts a lot like the dog or the trike. It will
(YELLOW) move forward as you approach it. Either speed up, or whack it with
a paper. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
MOTORBIKE : The motorbike appears at intersections. They move along the road
at a lightning speed. For this reason, on Hard Way, you should
approach junctions slowly. FIRST APPEARANCE: Hard Way
SEWER GUY : A guy will pop open a manhole in the road. He won't get out, but
he will raise it up enough for you to crash into. Hopefully you
won't drive on the road enough for this to be a problem.
FIRST APPEARANCE: Middle Road
STEREO : These done move, but they are positioned in the way. Usually to be
found close to paper bundles or mailboxes. Just try to stay clear
of them. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
TRIKE : The bloke with the yellow jacket rides a trike. He acts very
similar to the dog. He will wait for you to come near and move
forward to block you. Fortunately, he won't chase after you, so
once he's out of the way you're safe. You can stop the trike with
a paper if you are accurate. FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
UNICYCLIST: The unicyclist will approach you quickly, heading the opposite way
along the path. You should avoid these by moving either left or
right (depending on which side of the pavement he is on). This guy
is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, particularly if
more than one of them appear at the same time.
FIRST APPEARANCE: Easy Street
