How to Play

[HOWT]
NFL Football is the very first American football game for the Game Boy,
also being one of the earliest games that was released for the handheld. As a
result, it is _extremely_ primitive, to the point that there is no season mode,
no player rosters, and the only difference between the teams are their names,
along with some very slight speed differences.
That being said, starting a new game up is fairly easy - you can choose
what team you want to play (in name only, as there is nothing else to
distinguish between the teams), and what team the computer will be playing as.
You can also choose between Normal time - four 15 minute quarters or Short -
four 10 minute quarters.
When it comes to the actual game on Offense, you get six different plays
that you can choose from. Each of these is simply a route option for the
receivers and the runningbacks to line up and run from - you cannot actually
hand-off the ball to the runningback or the tailback. Because of the extreme
sluggishness of the players, the quarterback himself should not try to run the
ball, as you will basically always get taken down before you have a chance to
gain any yardage.
In any case, you will notice that each of the Offense plays have the
receiver on the right side marked A and the receiver on the left side marked B.
When the ball is hutted and in play, you can press the B Button and A Button to
pass to the respective receivers. By pressing the Left and Right buttons on the
D-Pad, you can also change which side of the receiver the quarterback will throw
the ball to.
Throwing the ball is a gamble on its own, as opposing players tend to
cover very effectively. Once your Quarterback throws the ball, the receiver will
stop moving around automatically, giving you the chance to control him -
conversely, however, you must move him towards the ball's flight trajectory, or
else you risk the defender catching the ball, and the defenders tend to catch
the ball very often. One of the most effective tactics I have seen is to have a
play where a Receiver goes straight, then have the Quarterback run to his side
so the Receiver clears himself of all but one defender, before throwing.
You must basically repeat throws over and over again, until you hit the
goal-line and get your touchdown.
When you get to 4th Down, you will have the option to punt the ball. If
you are within 40 yards of your opponent's goal-line, you will instead get the
option to kick a field goal. These are mostly automated - the only real action
you have to do is pressing either button once the ball is ready to be kicked.
When you get into Defense, you get seven different defensive formations
you can set up (six regular ones and Goal-Line). The Quarterback tends to duke
around to the sidelines before throwing the ball - you can try to stop him flat
on the sidelines, or you can try to intercept the ball, as he will always throw
it once he makes it approximately past his Offensive Line.
As for Kickoffs and Kickoff Returns, and Punts and Punt Returns - When
it comes to Returns, you can move around after catching the ball, but with
Kickoffs and Punts the entire play is automated.

Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the
link below. You do not have to buy anything right away, but (if you do not clear
browser cookies often) any items you buy within the next 90 days will count as a
'referral order' to me, meaning I get anywhere from 4-6% as a referral/affiliate
payment of what you ordered (ie. order $100 worth of stuff, I get $4-6 from
Amazon.com)
Other than that, considering this FAQ is for an obscure old game, if you
have any other obscure old games that you do not play anymore, consider sending
them to me (I will even pay the shipping cost!). I write FAQs for plenty of
obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even
better, a manual) is superior to not. You can email me if interested at

Although I believe I have found everything there is to find in this
game, there is occasionally the possibility of some super secret level in an
obscure game that was never found because it was too obscure, or the like. If
you have anything that you feel needs to be includes, feel free to email me at
