Hello, and welcome to this guide for a little-known early Game Boy gem called
Motocross Maniacs. It's a basic game with only a few courses, but it's loads of
fun, and I remember it well from the halcyon days of my youth.

Like I said, there isn't much to the game, but if you have anything you'd like
to add, drop me a line at my new e-mail address, [[email protected]]. This is a
new account I've set up exclusively for questions on my walkthroughs, so send
any questions you have that way. (My contributor page is also updated accord-
ingly. FAQs? Not so much =P )

All right then! Let's go!

D-pad: Tilts your bike in the appropriate direction.

When on the ground, pushing Left will pop a wheelie. You will have to
pop wheelies to get over small obstacles like rocks, or to get on top of
ramps that are situated just slightly above ground. Do not hold it for
too long or you'll lean back too far and bust.

In midair, you will often have to tilt your bike to the same angle that
the ground below you is on. This is so you don't crash.

Start: Confirms menu choices.

      Pauses the game.

B Button: Press this to use your Nitro boosters. These are indicated at the
bottom of the screen by small canister icons. You can only see eight
of these icons at a time, but you can hold more than that. Next to
the time boost, this is the most important item in the game, as you
will not be able to finish a course if you do not have enough Nitros
to make it past certain ramp structures.

A Button: Hold this to move forward. If you let go, you will immediately brake
to a halt, even on ramps.

   3 | ITEMS
   = | =====

(In alphabetical order.)

Nitro Boost - One of the most important items in the game. You will need Nitro
boosts to get items, make difficult jumps, and traverse compli-
cated loops. You start each race with four Nitros. Press the B
button to use one. If you press the button fast enough, you can
use two or even three Nitros at once to reach very far-away items
             and platforms.

Speed Boost - Represented by a tile with the letter S on it. This will increase
your top speed to its maximum level. However, you will lose this
bonus the first time you crash.

Time Boost - Perhaps _the_ most important item in the game. Getting this item -
a capital letter T - will increase your time meter slightly. There
are often several of these per course, and at later levels,
            grabbing them is absolutely essential.

Tire Boost - Represented by a tile with the letter R on it. Having the tire
boost will help you out when you're driving through the sand, but
if you're good, you shouldn't encounter the sand too much anyhow.

   4 | WALKTHROUGH
   = | ===========

   --- | ------------------
   4.1 | General Strategies
   --- | ------------------

1. The walkthroughs are written as played at the A-level. There are no
differences in the layout of each track on the A, B, and C levels. The only
difference between each level is that you start with less time.

Therefore, remember that the most important of all the items is the time
boost - on the B- and C-levels, anyway. The A-levels give you a full time
meter to start with, and it counts down more slowly besides, so at that
level, concentrate on Nitro usage and getting a feel for what the courses
are like rather than shooting for record times.

2. Bearing in mind that the later levels start you out with less time, you have
to learn to discern when you can afford to skip certain items. Usually, you
can afford to skip the tire and top-speed boosts. Occasionally, you can even
do without one or two Nitro packs. But DO NOT skip time boosts. Never.

3. Try to stay on the high path whenever possible. In the later courses, much
of the ground is made of sand, which slows your bike down greatly. Use the
Nitros to help you with this, but don't go crazy with them.

   --- | -------
   4.2 | Courses
   --- | -------

These course walkthroughs are written as played on the A-level.

1-A: The first course is a pretty easy one. You won't have to do much beyond
using Nitro at appropriate times (i.e. when going up ramps or approaching
sand stretches). You won't even have to adjust your bike in midair much,
except for a few ramps toward the end of each ramp. For those, just tilt
back a little while falling down onto them.

2-A: After the first two small ramps, the next one you see is floating slightly
above ground. To get on it, tilt your bike back so that the front wheel
touches the ramp. If you do this successfully, you will go up the ramp.
Use a Nitro to reach the Nitro pack past the ramp. From this point onward
it is important to get Nitro packs at every possible opportunity since you
will constantly need a large supply in later races. Remember that you get
four Nitros for every icon you get.

You will then start coming to circular ramps, the more complicated of
which often require two or three Nitros to successfully navigate. If you
Nitro from the pyramid ramps, you will be able to reach the circular ones,
which are often lined with helpful items.

After the "R" item between the two ramps, you will come upon your first
real complicated ramp. Use one Nitro to get from the triangle ramp to the
circle wall, then another one on the circle wall to give yourself the
needed boost to get to the flat platform (there is a Nitro pack on this
platform). While in midair, tilt your bike so that it lines up with the
ground - you don't want to wreck and lose any tire and speed bonuses you
might have gained so far. Finally, Nitro up the last ramp to get to the
top. If you crash and fall to the bottom, you'll have to ride along the
sand, which slows you down big-time and sucks valuable time away from your
meter. This is the main reason why it's so important to learn how to work
these funky ramp setups to your advantage almost immediately.

When you reach the next ground, pop a wheelie and Nitro up the ramp for a
time bonus. At the next ramp with the R at the top, skip it and drive
along the sand to find a ramp that leads to a Nitro pack. When you come
off this ramp, tilt your bike accordingly or else you'll eat asphalt.

The next obstacle you face for the first time will be small rocks placed
in the road. To get over these without crashing, you must pop a wheelie as
you drive over them. In this case, there is also a time bonus up in the
air here, and if you Nitro while doing the wheelie, you will rocket up
into the air and get it.

From here, you have two more circle ramps to deal with, which require two
Nitros each to cross. Repeat all the steps you took for the second lap.

3-A: If you navigate the first set of ramps successfully, you should have eight
Nitros when you get the second pack. Use one of them to get past the down-
ward incline ahead. Use Nitros to avoid the sand and get more Nitros as
well as a speed bonus, then pop wheelies over each of the four rocks in
the road. When you go up the big hill, fall down onto the sand, since
Nitroing to each of the platforms above the sand will suck away all the
    Nitros you have.

The next set of ramps is the most difficult you've had to traverse yet.
Nitro off the rock, then use two more to make it to the middle part. From
the middle part, use two more to make it to the very top where you'll find
a time refiller and more Nitros. Keep Nitroing until you reach the mid-
point, then do it all again.

4-A: Nitro over the sand to get the first Nitro pack. Nitro at the next ramp
and tilt back so that you land on the thin platform and get the added
time. Use one to get the speed bonus ahead. After you pop a wheelie over
the rock, you'll have to go up a perfectly vertical wall. It doesn't
matter how you do it or at what point as you're crossing these ramps, but
you NEED that Nitro, or else you'll run out and be crawling along the sand
for the rest of the race.

Once you have it, keep going along the ramps, Nitroing as needed. You
should find enough Nitro bonuses to be able to stay along the high road.
From this point, most of the race consists of Nitroing at or near the tops
of very high ramps to be able to just barely reach some half-circle ramps,
which often contain two or three items if you are able to get to them.

At one point, you will go up a circle wall and onto a flat platform, from
which you must get to another flat platform. To do this, Nitro and pop a
wheelie. You'll bump the corner and make it up.

5-A: Nitro at the top of the first ramp for a speed bonus, but don't use any
until you reach the top of the very big incline, where you'll need one to
get more Nitros. When you see the tire item ("R"), don't use a Nitro to
get it. Skip it and Nitro over while popping a wheelie. You'll get a Nitro
boost when you land and a time bonus on the resulting bounce.

You'll come to another big hill with more Nitros at the time, and then you
won't have to use them for a few seconds until you see a speed bonus.
Cross the ramps ahead with four Nitros, and then you'll come to a downward
incline with small ramps on it. Nitro off of these ramps to reach some
circle walls with a Nitro and a time bonus on them. When you come off of
these circle walls, you'll fall straight down, so adjust in order to not
    wreck.

6-A: Use two Nitros to make it past the first series of ramps. When you get the
tire bonus, Nitro over to get your first Nitro refill. Use a Nitro to get
over to the speed bonus in front of the circle ramp, then when you fall
down to the next level, Nitro over for another Nitro pack.

After this point, you have to be selective about when to use your Nitros.
Don't use one going up the big first incline, but use one on the second to
get to the third. Drop right off the third one to reach the flat ground
above the sand. Use one Nitro on the first platform, then at the second,
use two in rapid succession (it has to be quick for it to work). If done
properly, you'll reach a ledge with a pyramid ramp, from which you should
Nitro to get more Nitros and a time boost.

Do the same thing two ramps later to reach another Nitro refill. Stay the
course until you reach a big hill that leads into a very crowded ramp
area. At the top of the hill, DO NOT use a Nitro, or else you'll hit your
head, crash, and fall to the bottom. Instead, just drive straight in, then
use a Nitro at the bottom of the curve to reach another time bonus and
    more Nitros.

7-A: You should be used to adjusting your bike while in midair so that you can
land properly by now. This level will put that ability to the test. Near
the start you will see several setups like this: rock-rock-down-ramp. To
get past these, Nitro-wheelie off the first rock, then tilt down to land
    the ramp.

After those, you'll face several more rocks, then a ramp where you have a
choice between getting more Nitros or a time boost. Take the Nitros, then
drive straight off the ramp below to move on. Nitro-boost as much as you
can to stay above the sand, and don't worry about running out of Nitros in
this stage. What's important is that you collect those and what time
    boosts you can.

After the two sand stretches, you'll see a sign warning of a double loop.
Cross that using four Nitros, then use a Nitro to get to the oval ramp
with Nitros and more time on it. You'll head down the incline and onto a
short straight stretch. Nitro from the tip and pop a wheelie to make it to
the loop. Nitro up the wall, then use two rapidly to reach the time bonus
    just before the second lap.

8-A: Use all four Nitros at the beginning to get four more, then head up the
large ramp and Nitro at the top for even more. Ignore the speed bonus and
drop down to the sand, then Nitro-wheelie off the rock to get more Nitros
(you'll probably crash, but it's possible not to).

From this point you will have to use your Nitros constantly and keep
tilting your bike to stay along the high road. You will need every time
boost and Nitro refill you get along this path if you want to finish the
race with some semblance of your dignity intact. Once you finish the high
path, you'll return to the low road with many rocks on it. Nitro off the
first one to get Nitros, then off the ramp after them for a few more. For
the last one before the second lap, do a double Nitro off the ramp right
    in front of the sand.

You should now have a surplus of Nitros, making the second lap much easier
    than the first.

That's all eight of the game's courses! For a challenge, try playing with CPU
bikers on the 1-player CPU mode, or with your friend along a link cable.
