I. 2. FOREWORD
Welcome to Portable MK's definitive FAQ/Move List for the GameBoy version of
MORTAL KOMBAT. This document thoroughly covers both the original release and
MORTAL KOMBAT in the MORTAL KOMBAT & MORTAL KOMBAT II release (which will be
referred to as "MORTAL KOMBAT 1&II" from here on). This document contains
everything you will need to complete and get the most out of the game.
To ensure accurate comprehension of the material, this document was written
assuming you do not have any prior knowledge of any other versions of the game.
I have personally confirmed and thoroughly tested everything in this document,
and guarantee everything is correct to the best of my ability. Note that this
document was written for the North American release of the game. Your version
may be different depending on its region.
Some parts of this document may contain errors. If that is so, then please see
the credits section (chapter "VII. EPILOGUE", section "2. CREDITS/SOURCES") to
find if the error is from a source other than the author. Some parts of this
document have been directly copied from other sources (all of which are listed
in the credits section), thus, any errors were intentionally included.
This document was written with Courier New 10 point font with 79 characters per
line, and is best viewed at those specifications. This document contains
characters which your computer may not be able to display. If that is so, then
I would strongly recommend switching to a computer that can view them.

II. 1. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Q) I cannot get moves to work. What am I doing wrong?
A) You are likely not following the input directions as stated in the sub-
section "Reading Comprehension" in chapter "III. GAME BASICS", section
"2. OF PLAYING". Also, some of the moves need to be executed numerous
times to perform them. All moves like that are noted.
2. Q) Is Smoke in the game?
A) No. The rumor that there is a character named Smoke in the game is
completely false. Smoke is not even in any other version of MORTAL
KOMBAT!

II. 3. THE PLOT
The Shaolin Tournament for Martial Arts...
For ages it was a competition of honor and glory. Noble warriors from around
the globe were invited to take part, each seeking to win the title of Grand
Champion.
But that was a long time ago... before the tournament was corrupted by the evil
demon Shang Tsung, a warrior who took not only the lives of his opponents, but
their very souls...
With the aid of his pupil Goro, a hideous half-human dragon, Tsung began a
domination of the contest which has lasted for centuries.
Today, 500 years later, the contest begins anew as warriors once again gather
to partake in Mortal Kombat.

III. 1. GETTING STARTED
------------------------------ Game Introduction ------------------------------
MORTAL KOMBAT was first released on the Arcade platform in 1992. In 1993, the
"home system" versions-- such as the GameBoy version-- of it were released.
And in 1997, MORTAL KOMBAT was re-released on MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2 (which besides
the first screen to choose which game you wish to play, it is identical to the
original game). The GameBoy version of MORTAL KOMBAT is based on the Arcade
version.
Game Setup
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Two players fight each other in a one-on-one match to the death. Whoever wins
two rounds first wins the match. The matches are comprised of all the rounds
against an opponent. A player wins by either defeating their opponent, or by
having the most amount of life left at the end of the round. If there is a
tie, then you get a "GAME OVER".
Each character is armed with various unique special moves to aid them in the
fights. If a player wins two rounds, without letting the time run out, "FINISH
[HIM/HER]" will be displayed, and they will have the option of performing a
finishing move on their defeated opponent.
Characters
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are two types of characters in the game: regular and boss. Regular
characters include: Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Sonya.
Shang Tsung and Goro are the boss characters. The regular characters are
immediately selectable from the start of the game. Codes or cheats are
required to enable the boss characters.
------------------------------- Getting Started -------------------------------
Character Selection
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After turning on the game and waiting through the legal screens, you will come
to the MORTAL KOMBAT Title screen. From that screen or the screens that
follow, press the "Start" button to be presented with the Character Selection
screen.
Character Selection Screen:

While on the Character Selection screen, use the D-Pad to move the flashing
square onto the character you wish to play as. When you are ready, press the
"Start" button to continue with your selection. You have an unlimited amount
of time to select your character.
Not depicted in the diagram above, the six squares have pictures of the
selectable characters' faces. I have typed in letters to show where each
character is located on the screen. Use the Legend below to find who is where.

To learn how to play as other characters, see the individual character sections
in chapter "IV. CHARACTERS" or chapter "V. SECRETS/CODES".
Battle Plan
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After selecting your character, you will be taken to the Battle Plan screen.
This just shows you who your opponents are and in what order you will fight
them in. Between each match, it will appear to display your progress. You
will begin at the bottom and work your way up after each match won.
The Battle Plan has a set order of which group of characters you will fight.
The diagram below shows who you will fight on each position on it. The numbers
on the left indicate each position.

against the character that you are currently playing as. The matches labeled
"Random 2" (known as "Endurance Matches" and "Pairs") are against two random
regular characters, and never the character that you are currently playing as.
-------------------------------- Match Aspects --------------------------------
After completing everything in the previous sub-section, you will begin the
match. Below is what the screen looks like and what each meter represents.

Powerbar
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Powerbars display the amount of that player's remaining health. Damaging
attacks will reduce the Powerbar. When a Powerbar is completely depleted, that
player will lose the round. Each players' name is displayed on their Powerbar.
Timer
¯¯¯¯¯
The Timer displays how much game time you have left before the round is up.
Each round lasts 99 seconds. If the time runs out, "OUT OF TIME" will be
displayed, and the player with the most life on their Powerbar wins. If both
players have the same amount of life left, then both players will receive a
"Game Over".
Game Text
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
When certain things occur, text will appear to let you know what is happening.
------------------------------ Match Environment ------------------------------
The Stages
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The stages are the backgrounds that are fought at each match. There are three
different stages; they are always fought in the same order.
_______________________________________________________________________________
III. 2. OF PLAYING
---------------------------- Reading Comprehension ----------------------------
Throughout this document, there will be terms that you must know to understand
the material-- this sub-section covers those terms. I have spelled out all of
the input controls to prevent confusion and to simplify things.
Input Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• All moves can only be executed on the ground unless otherwise noted.
• While inputting the controls for special moves, you cannot press or hold any
other buttons, or the move will not occur.
• All special and finishing moves need to be executed rhythmically and with
the correct timing to occur.
D-Pad Directions
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
"Up", "Down", "Towards", and "Away" all refer to directions on the D-Pad.
"Towards" and "Away" are either Left or Right on the D-Pad. Which one it is
depends on which one will move you either towards or away from your opponent.
Inputting
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are two ways that moves will be executed: "," and "+". If you wait too
long between pressing the buttons, the move will not work.
"," : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away, 'B' button"
Description: First, press and release Down, then press and release
Away, and finally, press the "B" button.
"+" : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away + 'B' button"
Description: First, press and release Down, then press Away and
the "B" button at the same time.
-------------------------------- Regular Moves --------------------------------
Each character-- with the exception Shang Tsung and Goro-- has the same set of
regular moves. Which moves Shang Tsung and Goro can perform are listed in
their sections in chapter "IV. CHARACTERS".
Standing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Punch: "B" button
Notes: Goro is immune to this attack.
Kick: "A" button
Roundhouse: Towards + "A" button
Throw: Towards + "B" button (while adjacent to your opponent)
Notes: This cannot be performed against Shang Tsung and Goro.
Elbow: "B" button (while adjacent to your opponent)
Notes: Goro is immune to this attack.
Knee: "A" button (while adjacent to your opponent)
Block: "B" button + "A" button
Notes: This will not block crouching moves.
Crouching Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Uppercut: Down + "B" button
Kick: Down + "A" button
Sweep: Away + "A" button
Notes: Goro is immune to this attack.
Block: Down + "B" button + "A" button
Aerial Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Jump Punch: Up + "B" button
Jump Kick: Up + "A" button
Comparative List
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The following is a comparative list of each regular move's statistics. They
are listed in ascending order of damage percentages. Moves with the same
damage percentages are listed in ascending order of point values. Note that
the damage percentages do not apply to blocked moves.
Punch: 6.3% damage ; 500 points
Crouching Kick: 12.5% damage ; 500 points
Sweep: 12.5% damage ; 1,000 points
Elbow: 12.5% damage ; 2,000 points
Jump Kick: 12.5% damage ; 2,000 points
Knee: 12.5% damage ; 5,000 points
Jump Punch: 15.6% damage ; 1,000 points
Kick: 15.6% damage ; 2,000 points
Throw: 15.6% damage ; 2,000 points
Roundhouse: 18.8% damage ; 2,000 points
Uppercut: 25.0% damage ; 2,000 points
Damage Percentages Math
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
All of the damage percentages are approximates. They were calculated by using
a move until one more Punch would defeat the opponent. It takes 16 Punches to
win by just using Punches; so 100/16 = 6.25. Then 6.25 was subtracted from
100, and the answer divided by how many times the move was used. If a decimal
number was received, then the number was rounded to the closest tenth. In the
cases where moves added up to 100% exactly, the above step was not used.
--------------------------- Special/Finishing Moves ---------------------------
Special Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Each character has their own unique set of special moves. Below are a few
important notes about special moves.
• All moves can only be performed one at a time unless otherwise noted.
• Certain moves will not work against the bosses. All moves like that are
noted.
Finishing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
If two rounds are won, and the second round is won without letting the Timer
expire, "FINISH [HIM/HER]" will be displayed, and the winner will get about
ten seconds to perform a finishing move. This short period of time is known as
"finishing time"; that is the only time that finishing moves can only be
performed. Each character-- with the exception of Shang Tsung and Goro-- has
only one finishing move, or "Finisher". Shang Tsung and Goro do not have any
Finishers. If you injure your opponent, the finishing time will end. You will
not have the option to perform Finishers against Shang Tsung and Goro.
Finisher : Description: The victor finishes off their opponent with a brutal
or gruesome move.
Notes: Some Finishers require you to be a certain distance away
from your opponent; Finishers like that are noted.
----------------------------- General Strategies ------------------------------
These general strategies can be used with every character except Shang Tsung
and Goro. See chapter "IV. CHARACTERS" for strategies specific to each
character.
Tips/Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• The computer player will usually wait a few seconds, then advance to attack.
If you are close to the computer player, then they will retreat a little.
Use these patterns to plan when you are going to use any special moves.
• The Jump Punch is powerful, difficult to avoid, and is rarely Blocked by the
computer player.
• Blocking protects 100% from regular moves. However, Blocking will not
protect against special moves. Because of this, Crouch or Jump to avoid
special moves rather than Blocking.
Versus Goro
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Offense : 1. Use the Jump Punch and other moves which do not require you to
be too close to him.
Defense : 1. If he performs his Stomp, either Jump Punch him or Jump away.
2. If he Jumps away, he will often perform his Fireball right as he
lands. Use this to your advantage by preparing for the attack.
3. Never get too close to him, if you do, he will combo you with
multiple Punches.
Versus Shang Tsung
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Offense : 1. Attack him constantly to prevent him from morphing into other
characters. Knees and Jump Punches are the best regular moves.
2. He will almost always constantly retreat. If you trap him in a
corner, he will not be able to escape.
Defense : 1. Crouch his Fireball move instead of Blocking it.
_______________________________________________________________________________
III. 3. POINT SYSTEM
If you wait at the MORTAL KOMBAT Title screen, a list of the longest winning
streaks and those peoples' point totals will be displayed. To get on the list,
you must at least tie with the lowest person's winning streak total and beat
their point total. If you do that, a screen will appear after you either die
or win the game (after the credits), requesting you to enter your initials.
Because MORTAL KOMBAT and MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2 do not have a battery save feature,
all scores on the list are reset once the system is reset. The preset
initials, wins, and scores are always the same (they are listed in the diagram
below).
Winning Streaks Screen:

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Entering Initials
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After meeting or exceeding the requirements as stated above, you will be able
to enter your initials for the list. You will be prompted after either losing
or beating the game (after the credits) to enter your initials. Use the
controls below to enter your desired initials.
D-Pad: Left/Right: Select the initial you wish to alter.
Up/Down: Cycle through the letters for that selected initial.
"A" button: Continue with selection.
Earning Points
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Points can only be earned two ways: by successfully connecting either regular
or special moves with an opponent, and by the bonuses received for winning a
round. For a list of each regular moves' point values, see chapter "III. GAME
BASICS", section "2. OF PLAYING". For a list of each characters' special
moves' point values, see the individual character sections in chapter "IV.
CHARACTERS". Below are the bonuses that can be received from winning rounds.
Time Bonus: Description: The remaining amount of time on the Timer is
multiplied by 1,000
Points: Range from 1,000 to 99,000
Notes: If you win by "OUT OF TIME", you will receive no Time
Bonus.
Strength : Description: Depending on how much damage you received during the
match, you will get different scores. The lesser the amount of
damage, the higher the score.
Points: Range from 1,000 to 30,000
Notes: If no damage is received, you earn a "FLAWLESS".
Flawless : Description: Win one round in a match without receiving any
injuries.
Points: 200,000
Notes: N/A
Double : Description: Win two rounds in a match without receiving any
Flawless injuries.
Points: 500,000
Notes: You can get a double Flawless and still lose one round.
Finishing : Description: Perform your character's Finisher.
Move Points: 100,000
Notes: N/A
Point Yields
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
A point's yield is determined by how many points a move gives compared to how
much damage it inflicts. The information was found by testing how many times
one would have to perform a move to earn 5,000 points. Nothing is significant
about the point amount, 5,000; it was just used to easily put the values into
perspective. This point yields list is only for the regular moves with the
regular characters. The regular moves' point yields are listed in ascending
order from least to greatest yield.
Crouching Kick: 125.0
Jump Punch: 78.0
Punch: 63.0
Sweep: 62.5
Uppercut: 62.5
Roundhouse: 47.0
Kick: 39.0
Throw: 39.0
Jump Kick: 31.3
Elbow: 31.3
Knee: 12.5
Miscellaneous Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• If two or more people have the same win streak, then the person with more
points is higher on the list.
• 99,999,999 is the maximum amount of points that you can earn.

_______________________________________________________________________________
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In this chapter, I will use the descriptions, "Punch", "Kick", and "Block",
instead of, "'B' button", "'A' button", and "'B' button + 'A' button". This is
to prevent confusion and to simplify things.
To avoid redundancy, I have abbreviated the characters' names in descriptions
to only the first letter of their name (i.e. "Sonya" would be "S.").
To learn how the damage percentages were found, see paragraph "Damage
Percentages Math", in sub-section "Regular Moves", in chapter "III. GAME
BASICS", section "2. OF PLAYING". Note that the damage percentages do not
apply to blocked moves.

VI. 1. 2-PLAYER MODE
MORTAL KOMBAT is a two-player game, meaning that if you the supplies, you can
play against another human, other than the computer. Below are the supplies
needed.
• Two GameBoy systems
• Two MORTAL KOMBAT games (MORTAL KOMBAT 1&2 also works)
• One Link Cable
To enable this feature, simply insert the games into the GameBoys, then connect
both GameBoys with the Link Cable. When both of them reach the MORTAL KOMBAT
Title screen or any of the following screens simultaneously, "LINK
ESTABLISHED", "YOU ARE PLAYER {#}" will be displayed. Press the "Start" button
on either system to begin the fight. Player 1 will choose their character
first, then player 2 will be able to choose their character. If both players
choose the same character, then your character will be a darkened version of
themselves. If the Link Cable becomes disconnected during any time, "ERROR",
"LINK DISCONNECTED", "RESTARTING GAME" will be displayed, then the game will
restart on both systems.
_______________________________________________________________________________
VI. 2. JOHNNY CAGE?
In the arcade version of MORTAL KOMBAT there was a regular character named
"Johnny Cage". He was supposedly not put in the GameBoy version, but the
following shows otherwise.
The following GameShark codes are the only known ways that Johnny Cage can be
accessed (they are the "Player 1 Modifier" and "Player 2 Modifier" codes).
• Player 1 is Johnny Cage: 010*85D6
• Player 2 is Johnny Cage: 010*86D6
Since his graphics most likely did not get programmed into the GameBoy version,
for some reason, he has Sonya's graphics instead. But as these notes of
interest prove, he is truly not Sonya.
Notes Of Interest
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• His Powerbar displays "CAGE".
• When he is defeated and his opponent has the option to finish him, "FINISH
HIM", not "FINISH HER" is displayed.
• He never performs any of Sonya's special moves.
• He can only perform one special move: a short version of Shang Tsung's
Fireball move.
I would also like to note that Johnny Cage has no in-game information screen as
the other characters do; I have even thoroughly searched the game's rom in a
hex editor for it.
Special Moves/Finisher
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Fireball : Description: J. fires a short range fireball at his opponent.
Input controls: N/A
Statistics: 15.6% damage ; ?? points.
Notes: This only inflicts damage if it connects with his opponent.
Due to programming, this can only be performed by the computer
player.
Finisher : N/A (J. does not have a Finisher)
