Notes: Level one monsters in first few worlds. Level two monsters
appear before Nasty Dungeon level four. Level three monsters appear from Venus
volcano to Final Town. Level four monsters appear in Center of the World. You
can only become level five monsters after eating TianLung or Fenrir's meat, and
you stay at level five regardless of what level of meat you eat. More
explanation on "gaining levels" below.
***Figuring what family of Monster after eating a meat:
There are three classes of monsters (A, B, C). Generally, Class C monsters are
better: Big-Eye/Beholder, Sprite/Titania, O-Bake/Ghost. Plasma and Grippe
monsters behave like Slime. Apparently, human and robot enemies don't leave
meat, but sometimes they leave items. There are four levels of these enemies,
instead of five like the monsters because you never fight level five monsters.
When you eat a meat, add the number in column 4 or 5 of the meat monster to the
number in the first column of your monster. Then Add class modifiers (A,B,C).
See examples in the columns below. The Baby-D that I started out with ate
several samples of meat. Baby-D has 20 in first column. Add that to the meat's
modifier in column 4 or 5, for example, Jaguar has modifier 9 or -27. Last,
Baby-D is Class C and ate Class A Jaguar meat, so subtract 1. The result is
20+9-1=28, WereRat. You get the same result if you subtract 27 because
then you would continue from the bottom starting with the O-Bake family.
The Plasma and Grippe families are not counted. (They're there because they give
meat.) When adding, if you get a number larger than 35, continue from the top.
And when subtracting, resume from the bottom if you get less than 0, starting
with O-Bake.
***Figuring the species according to dragonspirit at GameFAQs.com:
Each monster has a DS level which corresponds to the area you can find the
monster. After you find the family of monster you will become using the above
method, you need to look in last column--DS level. This has five digits--one
for each species in that family. This digit stands for its DS level. When you
eat a meat, the higher of the two DS level between the original and the meat is
taken, ie maxlevel (orig, meat). This is compared to the DS level of each
species in the new family you become, starting from the strongest to weakest.
If your number is equal or greater than the species, then you become that
species. Else, you compare to the next weaker species until you reach the
condition above, or reach the weakest species in the family. If your maxlevel
(orig, meat) is smaller than the weakest species in the family, then you become
that species.
With this method, after you become the second strongest species in the family
(level four monster), you can never do worse. Also, after you eat TianLung or
Fenrir's meat, you will become the strongest in any family (level five monster)
and can never do worse.
The DS level is in hex, which uses letters A and B for 10 and 11: 123456789AB.
NOTE: Monsters you start out with have DS of 1, not the DS listed above.
There are a total of thirty-two special abilities that mutants
can learn. They are listed below, in order, after I discuss the
relationship between the mutant abilities and the DS level of
the monsters.
The DS level that determines what abilities a mutant learns is
the same DS level that determines the evolution path of
monsters. The DS can go from 0 to F, but for mutants, we
are only concerned with 1 to A, since that is the highest
regular monster you will encounter in Central Shrine.
Furthermore, the best abilities, therefore the hardest to
learn, can be gotten from these monsters in the Central
Shrine as well, with much luck of course. Each unique boss
also has a corresponding DS. They are as follows:
To get the DS level of other monsters, please check out
the Monster Evolution guide in the section above.
Anyway, for each DS from 1 to A, there are a set of abilities
that can be first obtained at that level. For example, on the
first world, you can learn Cure, Warning, Fire, O-Poison, and
Ice from the regular DS 1 monsters that reside on that
world. From there on, you can also acquire these same skills
on higher worlds. In other words, any monster with a DS of 1
or higher can also give your mutants any of these five
abilities.
Finally, here is the complete list of the mutant abilities and
the first DS at which you can learn them.
Interpretation and Discussion:
As another example, the DS 5+ category is Surprise,
StonGaze, and O-Stone. Any monster or boss that you fight
that has at least a DS 5 has a chance to give your mutants
one of the three abilities that were mentioned in this example.
On the same note, any monster or boss can teach an ability of
a lower DS than itself. That's why you hear some players can
get Teleport or P-Blast early by defeating Dunatis--it has a
DS B, which is higher than the necessary DS 9 for P-Blast or
DS 8 for Teleport.
Note that there are two Mirror skills in the game. The Mirror
that mutants can learn reflects or absorbs magic. I don't
know exactly since I don't have much experience using it. The
other Mirror, which mutants cannot learn, boosts the user's
agility. (Aside, I therefore took the liberty to rename the
first Mirror to Fizzle in my neoFFL2.gb ROM).
T/W: Type/World. Types 0=Humans, 1=Mutant, 2=Monster, 3=Robot.
Worlds 0=First World, 1=Desert Town to Ki's Body, 2=Lynn's World,
3=Guardian's World to Race Circuit, 4=Race Circuit to Nasty Dungeon
5=Nasty Dungeon to Final Town, 67=Central Shrine. Exceptions are bosses and
everything after Plague.
