1. INTRODUCTION
The gameboy and its progeny are great for puzzle games. Programmers can't try
to do too much, and the abstract stuff is there. Catrap is no exception--with
100 levels(can't play ??, the 100th, 'til you beat the first 99) and simple to
learn controls and tough puzzles, it'd be good enough.
But it also has takebacks! And teamwork! These make for some neat puzzles too,
where one walks over the other.
The basic premise of the game is that you need to push blocks or dig up
diggable squares to get blocks to fall where they need so you can walk across
and collect all the blocks. There are ladders and such as well.
Many levels here are reprises of the other; for instance, one level with two
players will have a similar structure to one with one player, but would be
unsolveable with one. The two-player levels are 90-100, 30-39 and 60-69.
This FAQ also uses terminology and shorthand for stuff I hate to have to keep
typing over and over.
FSOE = for sake of example, i.e. 1 and 2 are interchangeable.
ULDR = directions. May be combined i.e. "one square UR" is used, or 3U2R of this
square = 3 up and two right.
2. CONTROLS
U/D/L/R moves you in the corresponding direction, most of the time. The
exception is when a block you can push is to the left or right. Then you push it
and don't move. Players can walk over anything that's not solid ground, and they
can walk through or on top of ladders, unless the ladders are on the ceiling.
SELECT switches who you control.
A undoes a move--but time is eaten up in the process.
B redoes the moves you undid--up until the last 'real' move you made.
START pauses the game. Then you can move up/down to choose between restarting
the level or scrolling around(arrow keys, any other key to break away) or
exiting. The game clock still runs while you're in this paused mode.
Moves are quantized in Catrap. The board is 11x11 and mostly fits on the screen-
-if you scroll you can get it so the left column of the playfield and right
column both show up halfway. So you bounce from square to square, the game
processes the results, and you continue.
After you move, the game checks a few things.
Pushing left on a block kicks it left. Note that if anything is above it, it
falls down immediately. You don't have the chance to do anything in the
meantime. Once everything's still again, you can move.
Blocks always fall with nothing under them. Only the winged monsters stay up if
you remove their support from under.
General strategies may include:
--using one player to step over the other(i.e. players as makeshift bricks)
--dropping blocks down a chute to walk over
--placing a block DR/DL of a floating object to pick it up
--climbing on a bad guy to get across something, or even using them as a
stepping stone
--Keep in mind that with a small board there are only so many moves. This
doesn't make things obvious or only cheer you up, but if you can eliminate a
few, that works wonders.
--Often you'll have to delay an obvious move to take care of something else
first.

While not too taxing, this level presents some basic concepts--such as using the
objects you need to pick up later as stepping stones.
Circle up for the top object, drop onto the bottom one to the left, then go L-U-
L-3U. Go to the left edge, down, and push the block right into the gap. Back
left and up. Push the block right. Now you can push it right(the other one
blocked it before.) Pick up the object.

Your first encounter with dirt you can dig through. It's very textbook stuff.
Walk through the dirt, push the block back left, and walk over it to get the

The question here is how to get the corner guy without getting trapped. It
depends on how you get rid of the dirt. Go right to the ladder, back left for
two objects, right, up and left across the stairs. Drop left onto the top shelf.
L-R-L nets you the object on the right. Then 2L and the rock drops to your
right. Push it right off the shelf, get the object that dropped behind you, and
drop right twice. Push the block left into the gap to cross for the final
object.

This is another semi-tutorial level. It shows how picking off objects opens up
paths for others. Fall left, R-L-2R-L. Right for the next object, up the stairs

The first level where you'll have to shuffle the block over the ladder. Start
with 2R-D-2R-U-5L to push it into a gap you can bridge. But don't jump in yet.
4R-2D-get object, then left/uo/left for the one in the corner.

Here you build a platform to get to the objects, and part of that platform gets
you to the block you need. Right down the stairs, push the block left, then
circle back around and jump on it. Left, up, drop the block right, and fall
right over it.

The two blocks look stuck together if you just run under them, but here you need
to be aware you can kick a block with one right on your head. Right, up, and
left to take out the two dirt blocks. But instead of jumping off, tap right
once. The block to the right should slide over one. R, L(block falls,) 2L,
circle around, tip the other block left for the second object.

Here you need to bring the block down but a direct approach doesn't work as
you've nowhere to move it. Prepare an open space by going right/up/left across
the stairs. Drop right, go left to dig a square, and only then go back up top
and push the block right. Fall left once it falls and now you can push it right
and get the object.
Congratulations, you're one tenth of the way there.

Here's an introduction to what seem to be chickens. If this were a regular
object, you could move the dirt under it for an easy win. But it just stays
there. Fortunately the level is an introduction, so...right, down the stairs,
wipe both dirt blocks, and circle counterclockwise, walking over the block to
get the chicken.

They are starting to get tricky now. You obviously need to dump two rocks in the
pits below, but you'll need to use the other two for the remaining pits so you
can get across. So...
Left, up the ladder, right--pushing the block in the hole and making it to the
ladder. Down and right--first block in the bottom hole.
Loop back to where you started. Take out the dirt and retreat left. Push the
block left into the hole, and the final block gets pushed right off the ledge.
Fall right twice. Push it left and walk to get the object.

Here it'd be nice to be on the other side of the block, but you aren't. Instead
you need to use the two right ones to get across. Remove the dirt at the bottom.
Then push the block right into the gap. Climb on each ledge to push the blocks
off--back up if you crumble the ledges. Get the first object, push the lower
block left, then go back right with the block above your head. Push it left to
bridge the gap and win.

This is an exercise in stacking along with a lesson in timing when to destroy a
section of block. You need to get two blocks in the center chute before you can
fall down it, three to get the object.
Push the right block into the bog hole down. Then climb the right ladder and
push the block on top two squares right. D-L-L-D and push the second block
right, into the gap. Climb up the stairs. Push the block on top back on top of
the soft dirt. Then walk into the soft dirt and, after you fall, walk through
the right soft wall. You'll fall to the ground, and then you can climb the
stairs and fall left. Walk through the left soft wall. Fall left and get the
object.

Climb up the two ladders. Take out the soft dirt, then go back right. Climb over
the rocks to get the first object, then drop left until you can push the brick
in the center to the right. Do so. Drop right and push it all the way left. Go
back to the top and push the brick there left, up against the other brick. Then
climb to the upper right and go left--you'll fall to get the final object.

Destroying the blocks in the right order is important here. Go up the right
ladder and across the rungs, below the rock. U/3L/D/2L/U and push the rock 2
right, onto the left dirt square. Then take that square out. Go right to get
back on the ladder, then jump on the block you dropped. L/R gets the first
object. The second works similarly--take out the right top dirt square and drop
the block where it used to be. Then you can jump on the block and drop right for
the second object.
(You can get both birds in one trip if you want to save time.)

Go down a rung on the ladder and push the block left after carving the dirt up.
Then push the other block to the left edge. Drop on it and take out the dirt
under the object. Get the object.
For the floating object, push the dirt next to the right ladder, then push the
block above it that fell. Dirt will be revealed above, so walk into that. Move
back left and right to drop the block above, which you can fall on. Goleft for
the chicken.

Take out the dirt squares above where you started to get the first object and
walk over to the right. Then take the ladder second-right in the jungle gym in
the center. Drop off it below and you can eat the three dirt squares there. Push
the block back to the right edge. Climb on the ladders again and wipe out the
dirt square over the block you moved. L-2U-3R-2U-2L-R-U-2L-U-L nets you two
objects, and R-D-2R-4D gets you to the corner with the final object.

Go to the top of the ladder and right to release the dirt. Get the object. Go up
the right ladder and there are two blocks just left. Push the top one left, then
walk across and push the one behind it to the left too. Go back up and above the
row of ladders. Push the block left off them, fall on it, and push the next
block left. You've got a bridge to the chicken, which you can now grab safely.
Run right, go up the ladder, and circle around the top again where you can drop
to get the object on the impromptu P you created. Then go right and down the
ladder to the tunnel where the final two are--note it's one-way, so you had to
get them last.

Left through the dirt. Fall. Drop to the bottom. Take out the dirt to the left.
Now go up to the top. Push the block on top off the left edge. Fall on it. Get

A twist on level 10. Circle around, duck under the rock, and go left on the
ladder-row. Then up, fall left, and take out the dirt on the left.
For the next bit, get on the ladder-row and drop left of the brick below. Push
it right off the edge, then get on its right and push it left.
Circle around again to the top, where this time you'll push the block left. Land
on it, drop left, and push it right. You've bridged the gap below for a free
path to the chicken.

Lots of confusing pits here but the thing to note--get the right guy second. You
can't use him to get back out after all.
On the left ladder, push the block right and the block behind it right--they're
both in pits. Climb the ladder to the right, pushing each block left one square
at the top.
Crawl between the block and the object, then R-D-L-R-U-2L-2U gets you in and
out.
Back on the top left, push the one block onto the other. Then take out the dirt
beneath them. Go left to push them right--they'll fill up the two-high gap and
let you walk to the other object.

First thing to do, go to the third shelf on the left of the big ladder and let
the two rocks above drop down. Then run across to the upper left. Drop to the
bottom and pick up one of the two objects there. Push the block above it
left(use the single ladder.) Then go up to the second single ladder and push
that block left. Now get the object at the bottom and go right/left to get the
one it was supporting. 3R-2U-3L(fall)-2L and 3R-D-to the right edge wins.

Just drop the blocks in the right order and it's a piece of cake--right? Push
the top block right after the long climb. Then push the one below it right too.
You can now pick up the top chicken. Run right after doing so, fall, and run
left to take out the dirt. From there, go right and push the block that landed
on you back left. You now have a free path to get the bottom chicken. In fact
it's the only way you can get out of the bottom corner. Push two of the
remaining blocks at the top to the right. You can then catch the chicken.

come over and push the other block all the way right. Now 1 can pick off the top
right object. Have 2 go all the way back left. Let 1 push the block back to
follow her. 2 can get the top left object and now we should have 1 go right and
down and left across the ladder-row.
Let him take out the dirt there and drop right. Have him push the block left,
and then have 2 push her block right, down the gap, and have her follow it so
she winds up on top of 1. Then she can push her block to the left. 2 should fall

This is a wickedly clever puzzle where you just don't seem to have enough blocks
to make up for the missing rung on the left latter--but lo and behold, 2 acts
nicely as a moving block.
Have 1 go up the right stairs and leave 2 at the foot of the stairs. Have 1 drop
the first block left and get the object there. Now 2 can push the block left six
squares and dump the next two blocks--the second should move four left, the
third two left. Now you can place 2 against the rightmost block and have 1 drop
on her. Push 1 a square left and have 2 go D-2L-U. Then 1 can go 2 left. You'll
repeat this leapfrogging a few times until 1 reaches the ladder. From there,
just knock off the bottom of the top left blocks to get the object.

Back to just one guy, but with new objects. Frankensteins? Whatever they are,
this one isn't too bad. Although it may flip you for a bit as the upper one
seems to be the right one to get first. It isn't.
Push the two blocks right of the stair off to the right. Climb on them and
remove the dirt to the right. Retreat and push the two blocks that just fell off
to the right. Then run over them and fall right. Get the object under the block
and then climb up the stairs. Drop between the objects, get them, and run
right/up/left and drop left. Back up the ladder and to the right--push the three
blocks at the top to the right. You can walk in for the last object now.

Get the object on the top row and push the block left off th ledge. Then clear
out the second- and third-top objects. Push the block down the gap. Climb down
the stairs for two objects and then go back up--take out the dirt right below
the one block(net to the object) and then go back right, up and left. Push the
block into the gap. Now take out the final dirt square and push the block over
the object so that you have a column of three blocks. Go to the overhead ladder
and drop onto the blocks--that gets you the object tucked away, and the other is
trivial.

Push a block left. Climb to the top and drop onto that block. Move right to push
the bottom block into a gap. Get back on your starting ladder and push the other
two blocks left. Land on them and push the two blocks on the platform to the
right. Now you can drop the rightmost block in the gap below the ladder. Do so.

Get the rightmost of the objects in the center first--your major task will be to
move a block to the far right and this paves the way. Then move back down and
take the long ladder up. Get the highest object on the right and push the block
next to it all the way right. You can now get the far right object. Circle back
to the big ladder and go right to get the chicken. Then get the bottom object so
you can go left, up, and run right. Only the upper left remains, and that's
trivial(if one-way.)

Push the lower right rock left. Get the two objects next to each other. Then get
to the top of the ladder, go left through the dirt, fall, and go right through
the dirt. You'll get another object. Push the block that fell back left so it is
one square from the edge. the top of the four objects in a column. Climb and

object. Plow right and now you can clear out the objects on the right. Now you
can just drop the right block right and push it left--a square down and right of

Go left and up and push the dirt right for the block to fall. Left, up and
right--remove more dirt and the object falls. Pick it up. Then go to the right
ladder and kick the dirt out from under the block just to the left. Repeat.
You'll be under the block now--go left and push it right into one of the gaps.
Climb the ladder to the right and push the block right.
Climb the far ladder but take out the dirt to the left. This makes a clear path
to the top object. Then go back to the right edge, down the ladder, and go
left/right to take out the bottom dirt. Now you can push the top block all the
way left to fill in the second gap and win.

Take out the forst two objects at the bottom. Then go to the ladder and push the
lower of the two blocks right. Get the object next to you, then kick the block
right again. Circle above to get another object and drop between the two blocks.
Then dig the dirt under the block next to the stair. Walk over it, pushing two
blocks into holes.
Now retreat to get the object you couldn't before and then go up and right.
You'll make it to the far ladder, where you can push the dirt right to the left.
A block will drop so you get one object, and then after you've got that, go to
the top of the ladder, L, U and push the block right for the other object.

The most obvious chicken to get is the wrong one. Go to the top and push either
brick left. Then go to the fourth ladder from the right and drop. You should
land with a chicken to the left. Get it and come back around. You can repeat
this(third from right) to get another.
Next, take out the dirt patch. Go right when the block lands on you and push the
other block over it. In this way you can now reach the remaining top chicken.
Circle around again. Poke the bottom block right. Pick off the top chicken.
Circle around again and push the left block right so it falls. Then get the
chicken.
Wipe out the dirt to get back on track. Circle counterclockwise again, dropping
on the block from the ladder-row. Go left and then push right so the block is
down/left(or right) of the chicken. Then go down and below the block and up the
stairs. Jump on the block and nab the chicken to win this.

A very annoying looking level but straightforward running actually does the
trick. Go right and drop down. Go all the way right. Then go as far left as you
can. D-R-2L-R-U-2L. Up the stairs and run all the way down. When falling to the
right of the chickens, go left and clean them up. Then head right and up to the
top ledge. Drop the two blocks left so you can get the final chicken.

A nice response to the previous level--a marginally different solution, too,
especially with the gap being filled and there being more solid squares. But the
solution isn't quite as symmetric.
The first thing to do is to observe the following sequence: 3L-4R-D-2R-U-4R. Now
both blocks at the top are on the same side. This is important because you can't
switch sides so easily this time around with the first couple of blocks down.
Now take out both dirt squares in the center to create the gap. Go to the right
and drop the block above the chicken down the gap. Follow it and go left. Then
drop the lower block down the gap and then take the upper two and dispose of
them similarly. You can now drop into the gap as before and clear out the
chickens.

A big question here is--when to duck in and out? Fortunately it has several
answers, and I give the dullest. You need to push something to the right to get

Fall to the right and, from the corner,

left so it fills a gap. Then run through the dirt so you fall.

You have to loop the loop a bit to get that suspended ghost. Here's what to do.
Go to the top and tip both blocks left, right one first. Tip the block UL of the
object left. Climb over the block and fall left--pushing one block into the
corner. That's one ghost down. Back at the top, when over the object, push the
block to your right and then pick up the object. Push the block below it to the
left. Then climb back up the stairs. Drop left twice and then right.
Move left so you can push the block right. Put it one right of the ghost and go
under it(D-2R-U) before going to the top of the stairs. You have two blocks to
push to the right there, although you have to climb back on top to drop onto
them and solve the level.

push right. Then climb up a rung and remove the dirt there. Circle around
clockwise to push the block over to make a 4x2 arrangement. Only then should you
walk to the top. Push the block right and land on it when it falls. Run east
into the dirt and after you fall, get the object in the lower right. Then make
your way back left and get the tucked-away object you walked over.

This is a very nasty level because there's so much to get right, and you can't
dig in the top dirt in order to win, even though it seems natural to do so. You
need to bridge the gap with blocks and have both people climb over to win.
Have 1 climb to the top and take out the first five bad guys on the bottom. Then
have 2 come around and push the exposed block left. 1 can push it into the gap
where the other four will go. Have 2 move right a few squares. 1 should move L-
R-R-R and kick the block left. 2 can then kick the block into the gap.
Push 2 back right through the dirt and on top of the block over 1. Then have 1
go left, fall, and go back right. Let him get the last two objects on the right
and sit wedged between the three blocks. 2 should push the boulder to her right,
and 1 can kick the left boulder left. Then 2 can push it into the gap. Have 2
come back right and push the top block left over 1. Then have 1 push the block
left over her and have him fall in the area to the right. Now 2 can come back
right and push the final block on the left into the gap. 2 can walk over 1 for
one object, then 1 can take the stairs to seal the deal.

For the next part have 2 get to the left of the higher of the two stacked
blocks. Have 1 come around to the top of the ladders and move left among
them...put him 1 square above/left of the object. Have 2 push the dirt to the
right so the block falls on her and then have her push the block right, over the
one-high ladder. Now have her go back left, down the ladder, and right to cut
through all the dirt.
2 can now go to the top and drop the column of 2 blocks onto the block she
positioned over the ladder. Note she can just climb on top of the ladders to

row of goblins you can walk across and grab.You'll want to have six goblins in a
row, from left to right, after you enter from the right(a block will drop on the

From the right ladder, start taking goblins out as follows:
L-L-L-L-R-L-R-L-L-R-L-R-L-L-D. Now you have a path back in for the final bit
too.
Once that's done, walk over the goblin you dropped at first(on the right side)
and pick up two to the right. A block will drop on you. Go right and push it
left into the hole you made. Now you can go left all the way and dro. Go down
and take out the goblins at the bottom to the right. Go down, right, up and left
for the last one.

second, but thankfully you can loop back around once you've got one side done.
Down to the row with three goblins on each side.
4L, 4R, 2D, 2L and R-L until all goblins are gone. Then go to the bottom. 3L and
kick the block right.
Now to clear out things so you can walk back over and wrap this up. L-R-L-L-R-L
drops two blocks behind on the very bottom.
L-R-L-R-L-L-R-L-R-R-R gets you to the ladder with the formation you want so far.
Push the top block over so it falls and then go left, down, right and back left.
You should now have a block of height 4 you can walk over. Go up the ladder and
fall left twice.

it is. Then have her go left, drop, and push the block right and go right.
Now have 1 go 2R-2U-2L. Have 2 go right, push the block right, and switch back
to 1. Push him right two through the dirt, then down, left, up the side stairs,
and right through the dirt. That will bring 2 down on top of him. Have 2 push
the block right, go right a square, and push the other block left. Have 1 go D-
3R-U and now 2 can push the block over 1 into the pit.
Have 1 go back--D, 3L, U--and have 2 fall right, go left on the ladder row, up,
and push the block three squares right. Have her pass 1 so that 1 can go D, 3R,
U and 2 can drop the next block into the gap. Bring 2 to the top and have her
take out the dirt next to the goblin. Again have 1 come back(D/3L/U) and let 2
walk past him and have 1 go D/3R/U so 2 can run over him back to the top.
Now push 1 down, all the way left, U2, R2. This way the blocks will drop on him
and 2 will have just enough room to make it. As long as you don't push one block
right next to the other(drop them in the gap by the goblin) from left to right
and forget completely about the undo button, you're set to climb across the

chickens.

This level is like a previous one, but the synchronization can cause problems.
Have 1 take a goblin and then to R-L-R-L for three more. Then have 1 kick the
block to the left. Have 2 kick everything in her way right until she gets the
goblin on the right. Then have 1 go left. Let 2 get the goblin that dropped just
to her right and then have 1 kick the block left, go left, go back to grab the
goblin, and R-L-R-R. Now 2 can get the goblin on top and 1 can go right for the
final one.

Have 2 move left to get a ghost at the top and then back right. Have 1 move down
a square and go left so he drops on 2. Drop 1 right. Move 1 back right and up
and move 2 over a square. Drop 1 on 2 and move him right so the top row of
ghosts is gone. Now push the left block over as far as possible and the right
one on top of that.
Move 1 up two squares and have him burrow through the dirt left for two squares.
Bring 2 around to drop on him and then go left. This frees up the top row of
ghosts. But first, have someone drop off the left of the bottom row of ghosts
and the teammate drop on top and go left--pick off the first one this way.
The procedure here is simple. Have one person wait right of the row of ghosts
and have the other drop on the teammate and go left to get a ghost. It may take
a while to line everything up, but it's low risk. Use the left ladder to get
back up.
There should be four ghosts left; have both players on the right side and have
someone push one of the blocks left. Have 1(FSOE) climb the stairs and put 2 on
the chickens. Have 2 fall right and then go back left to pick up a couple. Then
have 1 fall on 2 and go left for another. Finally you can have 1 loop around to
the top left ladder, move 2 over one square, have 1 drop on the chicken and then
2, and get the chicken.
