====I: Revision History====
V1.0 FAQ portion completed. Walkthrough (which is only 20% of the game)
will be completed in next version. I might add an ASCII title if I
can borrow one.
====II: Introduction====
This document is written by me, and I'll be quite annoyed if
you copy it without my permission. I'll be glad to let you
post your own copy if you just ask.
====III: Basic Controls====
Stylus: Tap on an item or person to perform an action on it,
enlarge stillshot in Folio Universitas
+ pad: Move across screen, move cursor in conversation,
move from picture to picture in Inventory Screen
A button: Talk to whoever is in the room - you don't have to
be near them, select a choice in conversation
B button: Select an item in view for charm-casting
L/R button: Open/Close Folio Universitas.
START button: Open/Close Pause Screen - you can do a "soft"
reset by selecting "End Game" on this screen
====IV: Basics====
1. This game has a prerendered map - instead of the other games
where you are in true 3D, you will move across many "screens".
This can get pretty confusing as your character is not always
on the screen, and you will frequently get into a situation
where you are rapidly moving back and forth between two screens.
If this happens, just stop moving, and slowly move in one
direction at a time until you figure out where you are.
*Sometimes the transtition doesn't happen, so you can be
past the "border" of the screen, and it won't let you
cross. In this case, bring Harry back towards the middle
of the screen, and try again. Other times you will have to
cross at a specific part of the screen, like in the
Transfiguration courtyard - just keep running against the edge
of the screen until you get to the next.
2. The arrow in the bottom right corner always tells you which way
you need to go - always follow the arrow. It will also help you
if you are having trouble with the above problem.
3. Everything that you can cast a spell on will appear more
"sprite"-like, and slightly brighter than the background.
If you see any of these, go ahead and tap on them, and you will
get one of the items. Alternatively, tap B like mad as you explore
the castle.
4. Every overworld spell is exactly the same, no matter what you use
it on - they only change as you use them more often, in which case
you will have to get more "stars" before the timer runs out. Since
every spell is used in the Charms lesson, I will list the spells
and how to do them in the "Lessons" section below.
5. Every dueling spell operates the same way - you pick the spell
and which level you want to use, and then you place your stylus
on the screen and trace from each "star" to the next. It doesn't
have to be a straight line, but don't pick up your stylus until
the stars stop appearing, or your spell will be weaker.
6. About half the time, when your duel opponent has just a little
bit of health left, you will only be given the choice of
"Flipendo" to use, with no level. In this case, instead of stars,
you will have to copy the shape that is drawn on the top screen,
as if you are casting a charm. As long as you are reasonably
close, you should get an "Excellent", and you will kill the opponent.
7. There is nobody else in the school besides the person you have to
talk to to continue the game. EVER. There are a few students who
are there to let you play the minigames, but otherwise this school
of thousands is completely lifeless. This is a very linear game.
8. The four types of items are for all intents and purposes
identical - all they serve to do is get you the stillshots in
the bottom right corner of the inventory screen, and they are
all obtained essentially the same way.
9. The game automatically saves after you accomplish a task, or
when you pick up an item. There is no actual "save" command,
you just turn off the DS. When you restart, you will be back in
Gryffindor Common Room, at the start of the task you just began.
10. This game is really only fun during mini-games. If you want
actual gameplay, you bought the wrong game.
====V: Lessons and Mini-Games====
A. Lessons
Lessons are unlocked when you are required to do them during the
game's storyline. You will have to redo all of them once during your
O.W.L.s, and you can play them at any time by selecting them from
the "Lessons" part of the Notice Board in the Gryffindor Common Room.
Each lesson requires you to complete the objectives for that lesson
before the timer runs out, and every objective you complete winds
the timer back a little. If you fail an objective, the timer goes
foward a little.
You are given English letter grades for how you do on each lesson:
Passing Grades: Failing Grades:
O utstanding P oor
E xcellent D readful
A cceptable T roll
Any lesson in the storyline will force you to play it until you get a
passing grade. For the notice-board lessons, a passing grade will
unlock the next level of that lesson, which generally requires you
to finish more objectives in the time allotted. To select a lesson on
the notice-board, tap on the row of cells to the right of the
lesson's title (where your grades appear), not the lesson's title
itself. From my experience, you will not actually be able to try the
next level until you get an O on the previous one, even if you've
unlocked the next level.
1. Potions
For Potions Lessons, the chalkboard will display an objective for
you to do, and you have to complete a certain amount of them to
finish the potion. The objectives are:
* Put in the specified amount of the specified ingredient by
dragging it with the stylus from the scrolling list on the right
* Blow into the microphone to "heat the fire"
* Stir the cauldron either clockwise or counterclockwise with the
stylus (do not stop stirring until the next objective is displayed)
At higher levels you will have to complete more objectives to
finish the potion, and the scrolling list on the right can
sometimes switch which direction it is scrolling.
2. Charms
For Charms Lesson, the bottom part of the top screen will display
a charm that you need to cast. First, copy the symbol on the
bottom screen in the way that it is drawn (i.e., start where it
starts and finish where it finishes). Then, you will have to do
the "Charm Mini-game" for that charm. In both the lesson and main
gameplay, the higher you've leveled your spells, the more stars
you will have to get before the timer finishes to complete the spell.

to miss any of the whorls.

| \__/ send the flames back across the disc. For every tap, you
will gain a star. It seems that if two flames collide,
you automatically fail the charm. At higher levels,
there will be more flames crossing at the same time.
3. Transfiguration
The bottom screen will display an outline. You need to color it
in using the stylus. You are graded by a combination of how quickly
you finish coloring and how neat your coloring is, so be quick but
careful. My advice is to first outline the shape, and then you can
quickly scribble the insides in. At higher levels, there will be
more shapes to fill in.
4. Divination
A waving image will appear in the crystal ball in the top screen.
In the bottom screen, you will see several cards that show a
variation of that image. As you wait, the image in the ball will
become clearer. You need to use the stylus to tap the card that
matches the image in the crystal ball. My advice is to wait until
you can at least see the colors in the picture, and look for some
identifying trait in the ball image - either a crack in the item,
or if it contains liquid, etc. At higher levels, there will be more
cards to choose from.
5. Astronomy
A constellation will be displayed on the top screen. In the bottom
screen, you will see a field of stars with matching lines between
them. You need to use the stylus to join the correct stars to finish
the constellation. The stars you need to connect to will blink red.
The constellation on the bottom screen will not always be oriented
the same as in the top screen, but that constellation will always
be oriented the same way on the bottom screen, so you will eventually
know exactly which stars to connect. If you make a mistake, tap the
red x in the bottom right corner, and it will undo the last connection
you made. At higher levels, the stars will not blink and less, if
any, of the constellation will already be completed.
6. Herbology
Several pots will be displayed on the bottom screen. Every few
seconds, a white number will appear from one. You need to use the
stylus to tap the pot that the number came from the number of times
that the number specified. It takes four complete sets to finish a
pot, and if you make a mistake on one, the plant will go down one
growth. At higher levels, there will be more pots to complete.
7. History of Magic
A Harry Potter trivia question will display on the top screen, and
possible answers to it will be displayed on the bottom screen. You
need to use the stylus to select the correct answer.

8. Care of Magical Creatures
This "lesson" is done for Buckbeak and Thestrals, and works in two
stages. In the first stage, a heap of food will appear on the
bottom screen, and below it a list of "acceptable foods". Using the
stylus, swiftly tap and drag foods on the "acceptable" bar towards
the animal on the top screen. After you have done enough of this,
you will move onto the second stage, where the animal will appear
on the bottom screen. Small white circles will appear on the animal.
You need to rub the stylus in circles within these circles, until
the circle disappears.
I've never understood why Buckbeak wants me to rub its rear.
9. Occlumency
In this "lesson", Harry's head will appear on the bottom screen and
the enemy's head will appear on the top. Green blobs will come out
of Harry's head and head towards the enemy while orange blobs will
do the reverse. You need to use the stylus to drag the green blobs
back into Harry's head and tap on the orange blobs to pop them
before they get Harry's head. Orange blobs will pop green blobs if
they touch. If too many green blobs escape, or two many orange blobs
get to Harry's head, you will automatically lose.
B. After School Games
1. Exploding Snap
This game is a variation of "Memory".
Several Wizard Cards will display on the bottom screen. Once you
click the hand symbol, they will flip over, and a card will be
displayed on the top screen. You need to choose the card from the
bottom screen that matches the one displayed on the top. At higher
levels, there will be more cards per round and more rounds to
complete.
My advice is to find a feature of each card that you can remember
(color, or what the character is holding or looks like - whatever
works for you), and recite the feature for all the cards. Since the
cards flip over slowly, my advice at higher ranks is to pick out a
feature while they are flipping - at that rank, you know them pretty
well anyway.
2. Gobstones
This game is a variation of "Marbles".
A target will be displayed on the top screen, and your marbles will
be displayed on the bottom. The marble in play will contain frothing
liquid. You need to use the stylus to fling this marble as close as
you can to the target. You don't need to swing the marble hard,
but it needs to be hard enough that the movement is detected.
My advice is to use your first marble to get near the target hole, and
then use later marbles to knock the opponent's marbles away, or into the
hole. Since your marble loses speed when it hits another, you can use
this tactic to get rid of an opponent's marble while replacing it with
your own - for example, if the opponent got a marble near the center, you
can knock his into the hole while simultaneously placing your marble in a
prime position.
3. Chocolate Frogs
In this game, several chocolate frogs will hop down from the top
screen to the bottom screen. You need to use the stylus to tap all
of the brown and black frogs in each round. Tapping a white frog
will automatically lose the round (and the game), and tapping a
black frog will automatically win it. At higher levels, there will
be more frogs, both white, brown, and black.
C. Mini-Games
Mini-Games are played as part of the storyline, and cannot be revisited once
finished.
1. Invisibility Cloak/Climbing
This mini-game is played while setting off the Portable Swamp,
retrieving Colin's camera, and sneaking into Umbridge's Office.
Foot- and/or handprints will appear across the screen, with a white
outline shrinking around them. You need to tap the print, but wait
a fraction of a second until you can definitely see the print
shrinking. If you hit the print too early or too late, it will turn
red, and will count as a miss. If you get too many misses, you will
lose the mini-game.
2. Balance
This mini-game is played while retrieving Colin's camera and
helping Cho in the Owlery. On the bottom screen, Harry will walk
across a narrow beam, and below him, a bar with a slider will show
what his balance is. You need to use the stylus to keep Harry on
balance. To do this, touch the stylus to the screen, and when the
slider on the bar drifts to one side, drag the stylus to the
opposite side.
D. Quidditch
--Quidditch Controls--
With Quaffle:
+ pad: Move player
A button: Pass/Shoot Quaffle
B button: Dodge Tackle
R button: Bludger Ball Defense
L + A button: Special Move (Automatic Goal)
Without Quaffle:
+ pad: Move player
A button: Tackle
R button: Call in beater (Automatic Quaffle snatch)
L + A button: Special Tackle (Automatic Quaffle snatch)
The red character with the star under them is the player you are
controlling. The player with a full star under them has the Quaffle
(the ball). Keep on hitting A to tackle the opponent if they gain the
ball. Once you get the ball, keep on passing it to your players until
you get to the goal. Once you get to the goal, attempt to shoot by
pressing A when one of the goals is flashing. You will miss. ALOT.
Sometimes you will get lucky, however. If you can, try to aim at a
goal that the Keeper (goalee) is not in front of.
Your "special" points are represented by a color-filled portion of
the "Snitch Bar" at the top of the bottom screen. If you have enough,
try using a Special Move. Do NOT use a Special Tackel - it's easy
enough to get the ball without it.
I've NEVER been able to get the Bludger moves to work. I know that
in the Gamecube Quidditch game, they operate on Special points and
allow you to get the ball for free, but...this isn't the Gamecube game.
Well, it is a little.
To win, you need to make sure you have more points than the other
team by the time the two Snitch halves join. At that point, the game
will end.
====VI: Duelling and Dumbledore's Army====
In a duel, you need to turn the DS on its side.
Once the round starts, tap the stylus to choose: your target, your caster,
your spell, and your spell-level. At this point, red dots will be displayed
on the Touch Screen. Touch the stylus to the red dots, and drag it from
that dot to the dot that will appear next. To perform a strong spell, do
not pick up your stylus until the dots stop appearing.
I recommend using your highest level Flipendo, unless one of your characters
is low on health - in this case, use Protego. Stupefy "technically" stuns
your opponent, but it is only for one turn and hardly ever the one that
is actually going to attack, so it renders itself useless. Rictusempra
and Ventus never seem to be any good for use. Just use Flipendo. At their
third level, Flipendo and Stupefy will both stun AND damage the opponent,
so I recommend levelling those as soon as possible.
If the opponent is low on health, you will only be able to use Flipendo
to finish them off. Once you tap the spell symbol, A sigil will appear
on the top screen. Copy the sigil on the touch screen. The game doesn't
seem to be very picky - I've drawn some crappy sigils, and they always
get "Excellent".
My recommended strategy for dueling is to attack one opponent at a time
until he is unconscious, using your most damaging spell (which should be
Flipendo). To preserve Magic Points (which regenerate slightly each round),
alternate your caster each round. If you can.
In Dumbledore's Army Sessions, you will choose a character and a spell or
spell-level to learn. Once you pick a spell, you will perform the red-dot
excercise to learn that spell or level.
Besides the dueling spells, there is also Health Points and Magic Points
you can level. I would recommend learning the spells in the order of
* Flipendo
* Magic Points
* Health Points
* Protego
* Stupefy
* Ventus
* Rictusempra
You can learn two spell-levels per session per character, so once you've
learned your six spell-levels for that session, tap exit to procede with
the game.
