Hello, roadtosalvation here :) Welcome to my Item Maximization/Checklist FAQ
for SquareEnix's Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. In the "real" world I
go by John and have a strong affinity towards video games (at least the ones
I grew up with - go PS1!!) and video game music. I'm often found doodling in
sketchbooks where my art experiments with slogans and wordplay. I also enjoy
writing reviews and blare music from Game Boy games while driving my car.
Really, it's a lot more exciting than I'm making it sound... promise! (*lie*)

===============================================================================
I discovered Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light through Matrix's reworking
of Final Fantasy III on the DS. For some reason, I found the first ten hours
of FFIII to be pretty boring but something changed and I ended up liking the
game despite its limitations. Because of that, I was curious about the other
products Matrix worked on and promptly picked up a copy of 4 Heroes. I can't
say I was bowled over while playing the game but then I didn't know how much
I enjoyed it until I finished and started some other another DS games. I may
have been done with the game but it wasn't done with me :) This is something
I haven't experienced with too many modern games (I have a HARD time getting
into the current games of today compared to those I grew up with) so while 4
Heroes isn't as special as some of the other games out there it's special in
this regard. A new "personal classic" if you will. Anyway, while I was going
to work on Final Fantasy IV and complete the "Matrix" trilogy on the DS this
guide kind of interrupted that. No worries though... FF4 can wait for a bit.

The only other FAQ I've written up to this point is a soundtrack/music guide
for Wild Arms 2. That considered, this is my first gameplay-oriented FAQ. It
wasn't planned or anything; I just got the bug to do the work on it. I can't
make any promises for the future guides (soundtrack/music guides are my main
interest) but I probably won't write another FAQ unless another game demands
it of me.
Please note I'm not the same Ashley Winchester as the one at gameFAQs.

===============================================================================
This is an important section because it explains who should be making use of
the guide below. A little pompous I'll admit, but so there's no confusion as
to what's provided here.
In being an "in-depth" FAQ, this FAQ doesn't cover the basics you'll need to
know to be successful in completing Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. It
assumes you're familiar with the in-and-outs of the game's gameplay and know
the general path from beginning to end. Due to this, it's better to use this
FAQ for a subsequent playthrough of the game than one's initial playthrough.
In all honesty, your first time through ANY GAME should be about HAVING FUN;
not goals like obtaining every single item or turning it into an some insane
quest like this FAQ does. So do yourself a favor, wait before stripping away
the fun the game has to offer with an incessant amount of grinding :)
HOWEVER, if you're insistent on obtaining everything the game has to offer on
the first playthrough and want the story and gameplay to remain unspoiled the
following is as spoiler-free as one could make it without making it too vague
or completely worthless. For example, say I reveal the name of a future party
member. In general I can't avoid this, because some of the notes are warnings
that are intended to keep you from losing out on items and such.
Additionally, be aware that this FAQ is to be read as is in order; the format
isn't friendly to the point that you can just pick and choose what to read on
a whim. Future notes build upon past notes. This guide is also designed to be
used in tandem with a full-fledged FAQ, such as PiperStarfireGilmore's if you
want the extra assistance. Furthermore, while some will obviously disagree to
its value I recommend picking up a copy of the Brady Game's Official Strategy
guide. It has it's share of errors but there is information within that can't
be derived from the game itself like steal/drop rates. Due to the concepts of
copyright protection this guide DOES NOT include these numbers, rather I make
loose references to them when it is important.
If you have any questions about this FAQ or spot any inaccuracies please feel
to shoot an e-mail to me at theaterofsalvation[at]hotmail[dot]com. So I'll be
able to easily spot your e-mail, make sure the subject of the e-mail is Final
Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light FAQ or something comparable. I have no problem
chatting with other players about video games or video game music although it
should be noted that harassment of any kind won't be tolerated.
Additionally, I DO NOT make use of any social networking sites. You can thank
some of my self-absorbed relatives who use it to tout their latest, pointless
possessions. For example, my mother just informed me my cousin's family spent
a heap of cash on a dune buggy. My response? The usual "I don't care, why are
you telling me this?" Unfortunately, those words are usually wasted because I
still get these "updates" regardless of what I say.
Those irritants aside - it should be noted that just because this is the last
major update for the FAQ does not mean corrections will be made when I'm made
aware or when I get around to replaying the game to re-confirm everything. It
will be a bit before that happens (I've played the game from beginning to end
twice in a row now) and I don't want to burn myself out on it. That said, I'd
LOVE to do some more documentation on the game. I would really like to do one
for accessories specifically and I would (as daunting as the task seems) work
on confirming the enemy steals and drops listed in the Brady Guide as there's
some obvious errors in there. For the most part the remaining questions about
the game are related to this but if such work were to surface I would make it
into a separate FAQ - I have no plans to expand on this one.
The following are tips, tricks and suggestions that are intended to help make
your life a little easier when following this guide.
1) Beat the game once before attempting this.
I already mentioned this, but the time to aim for perfection is not during
your initial playthough. Your initial playthrough should focus on learning
the game's in-and-outs and (above all) having fun. Don't over complicate a
simple thing. Wait until you replay the game to make things complicated.
2) Don't go it alone.
Before you begin to panic, the above isn't a call for the player to employ
the game's multiplayer mode to earn more bonus points (which is helpful if
you can swing it); this is a reference to your in-game characters. Despite
the fact the game is called "The 4 Heroes of Light" there're many times in
the first half of the game where you won't have four characters because of
the storyline. This is important for a couple of reasons, the most notable
being that you should avoid grinding for drops when in control of only one
character.
Why is this so important? Well, beyond the simple fact that there's safety
in numbers I had an easier time obtaining items when I had more characters
at my disposal. I can't say there's any exact science behind it - it could
just be an illusion from starring at the screen for so long - but there IS
a relationship between the number of characters you have and the number of
enemies you face. An early example of how this works are the Blood Bats in
the North Caves north (heh heh) of Horne. Enter with one or two characters
and you'll fight ONE Blood Bat. Enter with three or more and you'll encou-
nter FOUR. This is just one example but it should be noted that this isn't
always the case; there are times were you will be unable to manipulate the
enemy formation in this fashion (you'll never encounter more than a single
Succubus in battle on the world map around Urbeth regardless of the number
of characters you're packing) so there's little rhyme or reason behind it.
If anything it's something you will have to toy around with. Keep your eye
on the guide below however; I do occasionally point out some opportunities
that employ this strategy. The more enemies you encounter the more chances
you have at receiving a rare drop!
3) Use the Hunting Horn.
Okay, I'll admit that opening the inventory every time you want to use the
Hunting Horn is annoying (they really should have mapped that to a button,
right?) but it's generally faster than pacing back and fourth in a dungeon
waiting for random encounters to occur. Also, there are dungeons where the
encounter rate is lower than normal because of party composition. In these
cases the Hunting Horn is really useful. To make accessing the Horn easier
be sure to sort your inventory so it is the first item in the first hero's
inventory; if you do this you can blindly tap the accept button as screens
switch so it activates it with little fuss. The only real problem in doing
this is any potions or attack magic spoils dropped in a battle are usually
placed ahead of the horn automatically unless you manually assign drops to
your characters.
Another thing to keep in mind about the Hunting Horn is that it makes some
enemy/enemy formations easier to encounter. Personally I found Rock Golems
easier to find in the Tower of the Sky with the Hunting Horn than without.
4) The magic number is four.
Given the purpose of the FAQ, it should be no surprise that it aims to get
you the maximum amount of each item. Okay, so 99 is technically the max of
a given item (something you'll probably be seeing on your consumables) but
since you won't be in control of more than four characters at any time the
sane number to acquire for each piece of equipment is four. Some items are
more limited in number and you won't be able to obtain that many (one-of-a
-kind items are marked with a "*" beside their name) and others have small
windows of opportunity that allow you to obtain extras. It's imperative to
keep a close eye on the list below so you don't proceed beyond such points
and overwrite your game, losing your shot at the item.
5) Points of no return, one-shot dungeons, stores and "darkness falls."
During the first half of the game there are points where certain obstacles
or events will prohibit you from revisting previous areas. Because of this
it's IMPORTANT to keep a tab on key items/opportunities. Only proceed past
these points when you're pleased with your progress and current inventory.
These points are gone over with great detail in the guide below.
Compounding this even further is the event known as "darkness falls." Lack
of a better explanation aside, the quest in Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of
Light can be divided into two parts. Part one is everything before getting
the Party Host and Hero Crowns; part two is everything after. This is VERY
important because the enemy creatures encountered during the first part of
the game (note that this goes for EVERY location) are replaced by stronger
yet strikingly similar enemies. Once the initial enemies are replaced, you
lose access to all their drops and steals. However, beyond a few instances
(mainly boss steals) most of the items are available in the second half.
Another change to be aware of that is born out of "darkness falls" is that
most shops offer new wares at the expense of old ones. You must be SURE to
to purchase these wares before this change takes place - or before hitting
an earlier point of no return. Once these items are replaced they are gone
for good. To avoid this, I usually just buy everything a given store sells
the minute I get to a town. If you've been selling off your extra gems you
shouldn't have a problem accomplishing this. However, for those like to be
more frugal the guide lists the "must-buys" and other ways to obtain these
items.
Last but not least is the quintessential "one-shot dungeon" which is self-
explanatory. Be sure to raid all the treasure chests in these areas. These
areas do not reopen even in the second half the game. They include:
> Guera Caverns: open until the completion of the Quicksand Castle
> Liberte Whirlpool (???): open until crossing the rainbow into Spelvia
> Rolan's Soul (1): Open until exiting after the defeat of Geri & Freki
> Rolan's Soul (2): Open until exiting after the defeat of Lucifer
It's in your best interest (and overall sanity) to avoid possible mistakes
concerning these areas.
6) Don't give up! Just take a break... for luck is a fickle mistress!
This isn't so much an in-game hint as it is a general suggestion. As would
be expected, waiting for items to drop in this (or any) game can be a time
consuming and (*gasp*) boring process. If you've been fighting enemies for
a significant block of time without receiving anything worthwhile the BEST
thing you can possibly do is save your game and take a break. I can't EVEN
BEGIN to count how many times I failed to get an item only to take a break
come back later and get two or three of that item right off the bat on the
restart.
7) Outside a few exceptions save spare equipment over consumables.
This is pretty general, but since your characters have a limited amount of
inventory space it's worth noting. When it comes to deciding what and what
not to keep (you'll likely end up with a lot of extra stuff following this
guide) always hold on to spare equipment over extra consumables. There are
some exceptions (Mythril, Orihalcon, Ethers and Elixirs are worth keeping)
but you can use the additional equipment in a mini-game to make some extra
cash later. When selling items, ALWAYS use the aforementioned mini-game to
sell them; you'll make much more money than you would selling it to a run-
of-the-mill salesman.
8) Selling off spare gems and buying from shops.
One of the biggest problems newcomers to The 4 Heroes of Light have is the
game's lack of post-battle gil. I to will admit I found that somewhat irk-
some, but there's an easy solution: Gems. While grinding for drops, you'll
amass an awful lot of gems. Selling these is your primary source of income
early in the game. I keep twenty-five of each on hand (save your Amethysts
and Diamonds however) and sell the rest unless I need to unlock an ability
on a character. Additionally, keep a close tab on how many of each gem you
have; when you have 99 of a gem make a quick trip to town and unload them.
Why go through all the trouble of doing this? While it's hardly necessary,
this will allow you to easily buy the items from the stores in the various
towns and help kick-start your item collection.
9) Stealing vs. Drops.
For most intensive purposes it's quicker to steal an item than waiting for
it to drop. An example of this is the Cursed Blade the doppelgangers have.
Unfortunately - before you get excited - there aren't many instances where
the items dropped and stolen overlap - even from different sources. Still,
keep an eye out for these opportunities to save some time.
10) Opportunities.
Opportunities are short-lived windows where certain conditions give one a
better-than-normal chance at receiving an item. These can include but are
not limited to: good enemy formations for farming, manipulating formation
through party composition/numbers or even a simple increase in drop rate.
Keep an eye on the various notes below to use these to your advantage.
11) Guest party members... leave them in their bloomers (literally).
This is a real obvious tip, but I'll reiterate it for good measure. While
the temporary guest party members you run into in the initial half of the
game are quite helpful, you should remove all their equipment before they
leave. Some of these characters have one-of-a-kind items you need to keep
if you want to obtain all the items the game offers and are listed in the
guide below as a reminder along with when they leave. Take note that some
characters leave right after battles which doesn't give you the chance of
accessing their inventory. In such cases, you should swap their equipment
with something that's easily replaceable before the fight so you can keep
the unique stuff with you.
12) The Bandit Crown.
I'll go into more detail about the Bandit crown below when you acquire it
in the first half of the game, but when you're item hunting - enemy drops
or steals - you'll definitely want a Bandit in your party. It's also best
to unlock the Pillage ability as early as you can as well.
13) The Wayfarer (no, not the Nightwish song).
While the Bandit is a usually a must-have character in your party, do not
underestimate the usefulness of the Wayfarer. Being able to escape fights
proves invaluable in cutting down grinding time, allowing you to pick and
choose which battles you finish. Alternating escape attempts from between
two Wayfarers is essentially free AP-wise. The list below points out some
times where adding a Wayfarer or two may be to your benefit. The Wayfarer
is the key component in gaining battle points in the most painless manner
(see "Point Harvesting Trick" in ZorlockDarksoul's Item Completion Guide)
which you will undoubtedly need to employ to gain every item.
14) Leveling up: the good AND bad news....
In most role-playing games having a high character level is a good thing.
This isn't entirely true in Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. Players
are most likely familiar with the fact that in the first half of the game
you level-up in a more traditional fashion (gaining levels requires a set
number of EXP points and enemies also give a set number of points) and in
the second half your enemies scale with you as does their experience. The
problem with this sets in if you complete the first half of the game with
a super high level. For most intensive purposes your expected to clear it
with a level around twenty. However, if you spend the extra time grinding
for items it's not unheard of to be a level forty / forty-five before you
obtain the Party Host and Hero Crowns. This may seem like a good thing as
you'll be slaughtering everything in sight, but the grass is not as green
on the other side as you'd think. In starting the second half of the game
with a super high level you will gain experience points at an accelerated
rate and your characters will level up like Banshees.
So you may be wondering what's the problem? Well, it's somewhat subtle at
first but you'll eventually notice that damage and enemy strength are out
of whack. Normal enemies will hit your characters harder than normal plus
boss fights require you pay even more attention to elemental alignment of
the boss so you can protect against it. You won't reach a point where the
game becomes unplayable (remember you can enhance your equipment) but the
proceedings will require even more attention than before. So is there any
thing to gain from this? Yep!! Have you ever wanted to rip through bosses
like there was no tomorrow? Bosses will fall over like dominos if you use
moves like Magic Might and Frenzy-fu.
15) Now or Later?
Take note that this FAQ lists drops and steals the first time they become
available. This is done to allow the player to make a decision on whether
or not they want to obtain the item right away. In no way should these be
seen or read as dictations - if you want to hold off on obtaining drop or
two (excluding boss drop/steals; I wouldn't suggest skipping those) for a
later opportunity you should do so. In fact, the guide will inform you if
there is a better place to get an item down the road. In many cases it is
better to wait; items seem to drop with a greater frequency in the second
half of the game anyway :)
16) Item Locations
For the most part, this guide only lists the items in each location - not
where they are specifically. This is not a mistake and is done on purpose
because this is what full-fledged FAQs like those by PiperStarfireGilmore
are for. Additionally, some people may want to find the treasure on their
own but want a guide to HOW MUCH treasure there is in a given area. Again
it should be noted this guide was created to work with general FAQs.
17) Treasure Chests: 113... 114... 115... the great mystery.
A lot of work has gone into trying to determine how many chests there are
in Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and how to get the 100% find rate
from Cid in Horne. I managed to get it with 113 chests. In recording this
data I was pretty careful but sometimes things fall through the cracks. I
say this because there are other sources that indicate that there are 114
and 115 treasure chests in the game. Since I can't really replay the game
until I'm done with the file I'm working on now for this FAQ (there's one
save file per cart) personal confirmation of this will have to wait until
I replay the game. However, given how much time I have played the game to
write this FAQ I plan on taking a significant break before doing that - I
don't want to burn myself out.
Note: It is generally believed that treasure chests with key items do not
count towards your percentage total. Gifts as they are marked below
do not count either.
===============================================================================
Part 1: Before Darkness ............................................. [HOL07]
===============================================================================
Part one of this FAQ covers the items, drops, and steals up to acquisition of
the Party Host and Hero crowns. This is the larger potion of the game and you
will have to be aware you do not have infinite access to enemies or the items
sold by stores during this portion of the game - weigh your options carefully
and keep your eyes open for good farming opportunities.

===============================================================================
Note: Gale Gauntlets are very difficult to obtain at this point with the drop
rate being less than half of what it is for the Wind Foil and Harp. You
will have a better chance when you start encountering Falcons in groups
around Liberte and Arbor. However, a much better opportunity awaits you
in the second half of the game when re-exploring the Animal Burrow; the
drop rate from Arps is more than double than it is with the Falcons and
you'll be fighting Arps to acquire Quaking Harps regardless.
Note: Despite what I've said in previous versions of this guide you can fight
Imps during the day.
Note: If you're planning to level up Brandt before meeting up with Jusqua, it
is a good idea to carry three to four potions as there's the chance you
may run into the Metal Flan. Metal Flans have an extremely high evasion
stat which makes them hard to hit leading to a prolonged battle. You'll
probably need some additional hit points to finish the battle which you
will be nicely rewarded for with 40 experience points and a amethyst!
One can breathe a little easier about encountering Metal Flans once the
party has access to the Cure Tome; Jusqua has one when he joins up with
Brandt a little later.
Note: As will be mentioned in the section on the North Caves, you may want to
put off grinding for drops around Horne until you have three characters
(or until you encounter Yunita in the Witch's Mansion). This will allow
your characters to encounter more enemies per fight - thus more chances
for a drop - and obtain more experience (remember experience points are
NOT divided between the members of your party like in some role-playing
games - Mega Man X Command Mission) but for reasons explained later you
should do all your grinding before getting your fourth party member.

===============================================================================
[ ] Bloody Ring / Blood Bat / rare (Alt Drop: Blood Bat/Vampire Bat - Pt2)
Note: The drop rate for the Bloody Ring is simply abysmal, being less than 1%
according to the official strategy guide by Brady Games. Taking a quick
survey of the situation, there would initially seem to be better places
to grind for the ring (for example, Blood Bats come in sets of three in
the Guera Caverns) but access to the caverns is lost upon the events at
the end of the Quicksand Castle. Unfortunately, these events take place
before you gain access to the Bandit crown which greatly aids one while
item hunting.
However, there's a few things you can do to make the North Caves a good
area to grind for the rings. The first is to enter the caves with three
to four characters. This will change the encounter with one bat to four
bats. This can be accomplished with Brandt, Jusqua and Yunita (prior to
fighting the boss in the Witch's Mansion; it's not a good idea to grind
for enemy drops after this battle for reasons that'll be clear later on
...) Brandt, Yunita, Krinjh and - the most important - Brandt, Aire and
Torte. As you'd imagine, the windows for these parties are really small
(especially the Brandt, Aire and Torte party) where you'll be in animal
form, but it's this group that's your best bet since you'll have access
to the Bandit crown.
Still, as smart as it may seem to wait to grind for Bloody Rings (drops
are a little more common when fighting Blood Bats in the second half of
game) there is a decent reason to get a few Bloody Rings as soon as you
can. The reason? The in-game description of the ring is somewhat wrong.
Gaining HP back for attacking doesn't happen 10% of the time it happens
EVERY TIME you launch a NORMAL attack. Where does that 10% come in? You
gain back 10% of the damage you inflict as HP. So if your attack causes
70 damage you'll get back 7HP. This is a great way to make classes like
Wayfarers and Bandits more self-sufficient in random battles where your
choice of accessory isn't overly important like it is in boss fights.
[ ] Power Ring / Boss: Minotaur / rare (Sold: Guera - Pt1/Urbeth)
Note: As you can probably guess, it's not worth your time or effort to obtain
this drop; you'll have to reset your DS a couple dozen times to get the
ring and the boost it provides is hardly worth it at this point. Buy it
at your leisure when you are in Guera or Urbeth.
===============================================================================
> North Caves (Starting Equipment: Jusqua)
===============================================================================
Note: Despite the fact you'll need two pieces of Mythril later to advance the
story, don't bother trying to get the Mythril as a drop; it's much more
efficient to steal it from Mythritoises later in the game. This can get
you some serious money and is something you'll take advantage of later.
Note: Upon speaking to Aire in the Witch's Mansion, you will briefly lose the
ability to store items due to the story. Two members of your party will
leave before this feature is restored. Because of this, I recommend you
grind for any items you're interested in BEFORE reaching this point. If
you chose to grind after this point (say to increase Aire's level) hold
on to extra equipment and ditch extra consumables like potions. There's
an event later where the equipment will come in handy; consumable items
(unless they are Ethers or something better) are easily replaceable and
are barely worth any gil.
Note: Upon beating the boss you will be awarded the Wayfarer Crown. While you
should obviously change all your characters into Wayfarers it should be
noted that the second ability (Escape) is helpful in grinding for items
by cutting down on battle length. While you can't pick and choose which
battles you enter in the literal sense, you can at least flee ones with
enemies you don't want to fight. This isn't as useful in the first half
of the game as it is in the second as the number of characters you have
will be constantly changing during this portion of the game but do keep
it in mind since it can make things quicker. While you will miss out on
experience you'll still gain the five multiplayer points a battle gives
you if you finish the battle or not.
===============================================================================
> Town of Horne (Shopping)
===============================================================================
[ ] Traveler's Garb (also available in Guera, Liberte and Urbeth)
Note: The "shopping" sections only cover items that are replaced by different
goods at their given shops in the second half of the game. If you don't
buy these items before they're replaced (or haven't located another one
from another source like a treasure chest) they are lost forever.
Unfortunate as this may be, it's important to note that access to these
shops is actually lost before the second half of the game and "darkness
falls." There are several "points of no return" to be aware of prior to
that point so make sure you purchase these items before those points. I
will post notes on where these points occur.
Note: While the Traveler's Garb initially seems like one of the items that is
affected by the above situation it really isn't. Granted there's a time
where you'll be unable to purchase it because stores drop it from their
inventory but once the stores in the Town of Horne reopen you will have
access to it again. Upon acquiring the Dark Fencer crown the Traveler's
Garb (and a few other items) are just moved to the woman in blue in the
same house. Items that disappear and CAN'T be obtained in any other way
are marked with "**" beside them.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Guera (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: After your party splits up in Horne Castle, your ability to store items
is restored in the Town of Horne. Also, the store has slightly expanded
its wares (see section above). This is important because you won't have
immediate access to the next town. Handy as this is, it should be noted
these services do not last forever and are lost when the Baneful Magick
Investigation Unit pulls out of Horne. This occurs when the game shifts
the narrative back to Liberte where Jusqua and Aire are.
Note: The world map is a generally a terrible place to grind for Poison Rings
since Basilisks aren't as common as Big Worms; you will never encounter
more than one per battle, even if you have more than two party members.
There are much better enemy groups to farm from in the Moonlight Tower;
be sure to check out the room on the 4th floor with the Adventurer; you
will usually fight two Basilisks per battle and the fight with three is
fairly common. You may want to wait until you have the Bandit crown (it
becomes available while some of your characters are in the Guera area).
However, waiting until the second half of the game may be best when you
can encounter the Cockatrice in these areas; your chance of receiving a
Poison Ring is more than doubled when compared to Basilisks.
Note: The Earth Gauntlet is so common that there is no real reason to wait on
obtaining it. The drop rate's actually the same from the Wyorms in Part
2 so if you miss it no harm done. However, the drop rate from Big Worms
in second half goes down by more than half.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Guera (Starting Equipment: Krinjh)
===============================================================================
[ ] Krinjh's Sword*
[ ] Krinjh's Robe
Note: Despite the fact that it is not a one-of-a-kind item, you should borrow
(ok... swipe) Krinjh's Robe before he leaves the party. The small boost
in magic defense can be very helpful at this point in the game. When it
come to Krinjh's Sword be sure to lift that; it IS a one-of-a-kind-item
and will be even more useful.
[ ] Death Ring / Wight (7EXP) / rare (Alt Drop: Wight 12 EXP, Tokkaku - Pt2)
Note: The drop rate for the Wight's Death Ring in the early areas of the game
pretty much matches the Ikkaku unless you wait until Invidia or Spelvia
where the drop rate more than doubles. It's best to hold off but you'll
probably get some Death Rings if you attempt to obtain a Poison Ring or
two from the Basilisks. The drop rate drops back down a little (but not
to the original rate) in the second half of the game for the Wights.
Also, Wights are generally the better enemy to farm the ring from since
they come in bigger groups. Ikkakus most often come in ones or twos and
appear with other enemies but the Tokkaku (the final version of Ikkaku)
have the greatest chance of dropping it in the game; unfortunately they
are located in some of the game's last areas.
Fun fact: Even though the Ikkakus on the sea and in the Arctic give out
the same amount of experience and equal chance of dropping a Death Ring
they are not the same enemy; their other stats are not the same :}
[ ] #018: Torch
[ ] #019: Wood Axe*
[ ] #020: Ether
[ ] #021: Water Tome
[ ] #022: Phoenix Down
Note: Be sure you obtain all the items in the Guera Caverns before you finish
the Quicksand Castle; access to the area is lost beyond this point. The
Wood Axe is a one-of-a-kind item that can't be replaced if left behind.
Note: Before fighting the Sand Devil make sure to unequip Krinjh of any items
you would like to keep a hold of - like his sword and armor. Again, his
sword is one-of-a-kind, the armor not so much (you can farm them later)
but you should take it since it's good at this point in the game. Also,
make sure NOT to give Krinjh the Earth Sword the Sand Devil drops while
dividing the loot on the post-battle inventory screen.
[ ] Terra Stave / Cait Sith / rare (Alt Drop: Neko Natter/Cait Sith - Pt2)
Note: Cait Sith's will still carry Terra Staves during the second half of the
game but the drop rate drops by more than half. Unfortunate as this may
be, you can circumvent this by fighting Neko Natters who drop it at the
same rate. The only bad thing is they don't come in large numbers. Also
be aware that you WILL NOT have the chance to buy Terra Staves although
you'll find one in a treasure chest a little later.
Note: The Earth Sword is a guaranteed drop and is another one-of-a-kind item.
Make ABSOLUTELY SURE not place it Krinjh's inventory after the battle -
he'll be leaving along with everything he is carrying.
[ ] Rainbow Boots **
[ ] Knife **
[ ] Flame Dagger (also available in Invidia)
[ ] Tranquilizer
Note: If you are only interested in obtaining one of each item you don't need
to buy the Rainbow Boots. You can trade a NPC for them before the event
they're needed for.
Note: The Flame Dagger can also be stolen from the Yunita Doppelganger in the
first or second parts of the game. Keep this in mind if you fail to buy
it before the store quits carrying it or you pass a point of no return.
Note: You will be unable to buy Tranquilizers in the second half of the game.
They can be obtained from enemies as drops and steals however. The same
thing is true of Antidotes.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Liberte
===============================================================================
Note: Slimes are the only new encounter around the Liberte area and they have
no noteworthy drops. The Falcon also returns but you might want to wait
until you have the Bandit crown if you want a pair of Gale Gauntlets.
[ ] #029: 300 Gil
[ ] #030: Rock Lance
[ ] #031: Terra Stave
[ ] #032: 500 Gil ***
[ ] #033: Icebrand ***
[ ] #034: 500 Gil ***
[ ] #035: Ocean Stave ***
[ ] #036: Hunting Horn ***/*
[ ] #037: Antarctic Wind ***
Note: Make sure you obtain ALL the treasure chests (those marked with ***) in
the last room of the Pirate Hideout. These chests will be "reused" when
you revisit the Hideout in the second half of the game. If you skip the
contents within the first time around you'll miss out on the items they
originally contained when they are overwritten.
[ ] Sleep Ring / Lamia / rare (Steal: Air Ray/Lamia - Pt1)
Note: The room w/the Adventurer right before the boss is a good spot to fight
Lamias; sometimes there are two per fight. Stealing them later from Air
Rays while traveling the seas or the from the Lamias themselves is much
more economical but if you go the last route you'll need to double back
to this point once you get the Bandit crown.
Note: While you'll probably get some Turtle Shells if you choose to grind for
Sleep Rings, it's much easier to purchase them in Urbeth later. You can
also (like the Sleep Ring above) double back to the Pirate Hideout when
you have the Bandit crown to steal them from Aspidochelons themselves.
Note: Access to the Liberte Whirlpool is unlimited until crossing the rainbow
into Spelvia. Make sure you grab all four treasure chests (like the one
-of-a-kind Earth Bow) before that point.
Note: You can also encounter Ichthons on the high seas later when you'll have
the added benefit of the Bandit crown. Additionally, just like the Gale
Gauntlets, if you wait until the second half of the game you'll be able
to take advantage of the higher - more than double - drop rate from the
Oceanus enemies in the Pirate Hideout. If you wait till later, the pair
you'll find in a upcoming treasure chest should tide you over.
Note: I am going to be honest here: I am a bit skeptical that this thing even
HAS the Shark Lance. Other gamers have told me they've seen it drop but</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
in all the hours I put into defeating him over and over (which was VERY
boring AND annoying) I never saw the thing drop and I will probably not
believe it until I see it myself. Because of this and the fact they are
very easy to steal from 6EXP Orcs, don't bother trying to get the Shark
Lance here.
Note: There are no treasures in the Animal Burrow, but upon the conclusion of
the events that occur here you'll have access to the Bandit Crown. With
an active Bandit in your party, items have an added %5 to %10 chance to
drop (for most of the items this guide's concerned with it will only be
an additional 5%). With this crown in tow, revisit any areas you passed
over drops if you want - the only exception being the Guera Caverns. It
should also be noted that this bonus doesn't stack; there is no benefit
to having two or more bandits in your party.
Note: Don't bother unlocking the Plunder ability for your Bandit. While being
able to steal from multiple targets simultaneously seems like an useful
ability, once you factor in the move's horrible success rate it is next
to worthless. There's another ability you'll want to unlock in the near
future on the Bandit but we lack a necessary component at the moment.
Note: While this doesn't occur at the moment, be aware that the path to Guera
through the Animal Burrow is eventually sealed off. Don't try to be sly
later in the game and think you'll be able to get the whole way back to
the beginning of the game this way. I'll inform you of any points of no
return.
Note: Now that you have access to a character in animal form, be sure to grab
the last of the hidden treasures. Definitely grab the Dirt Dirk, it's a
one-of-a-kind-item.
Note: With a character in animal form you now have access to the second magic
shop in Guera. Be sure to check out and buy their wares.
Note: You may want to hold of on obtaining Flash Ring or two as the drop rate
increases two and a half times while fighting Giant Moths in the second
half of the game.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Arbor (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: If you are going to do ANY grinding outside Arbor, make sure you DO NOT
ENTER Arbor under ANY circumstances until you are finished. A few steps
into Arbor, a storyline event will take over and switch the proceedings
to the other group. You will have to go back to Guera through the Fairy
Path if you need any services like the inn or item storage.
Because of this (and the fact there's a point where you'll gain a third
party member) you may want to hold off on obtaining this drop for a bit
as there are better opportunities within the dungeons of Arbor. HOWEVER
if don't plan on using the Stun Rings and would like to save some time,
I'd suggest waiting until the second half of the game where you can use
your sticky fingers to steal them rather than waiting for them to drop.
OPTIONAL: NOW, IF YOU WANT TO SOMEWHAT BREAK THE GAME....
Before advancing into Arbor you may want to travel west (than northwest
to where the snow is located) to fight Mythritoises along the VERY EDGE
of the snow fields - a blizzard blocks the main portion of the field to
prevent sequence breaking :) You can steal Mythril from these creatures
(it's the most common steal) which can be sold in an upcoming event for
5000 gil a pop. Even if you don't believe you need money (the next town
has TONS of shops) it is a least worth stealing twelve pieces to easily
unlock an additional crown and prepare for two future storyline events.
Also be aware that Mythritoises only come out at night and sunset. Some
will argue that the following is extreme overkill (well..... this whole
guide is) 99 pieces of Mythril will net you 495,000 Gil which will last
you until you reach the hidden shops in the game's optional areas. Also
of note are Turtle Shells you'll being obtaining when you fail to steal
Mythril or receive for defeating the Mythritoise - these go for 500 gil
in Urbeth.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Arbor (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
[ ] Whispering Harp / Imp (6EXP) / common (Alt Steal: Arp - Pt2)
Note: If Mythritoises didn't hang out on the edge of the snowfields, stealing
Whispering Harps from Imps around Arbor would be an awesome way to make
money. Whispering Harps have an innate value of 1080 Gil (which you can
sell for at least 1000 Gil in Urbeth). Still, if you're going to commit
larceny to make money go for the Mythril since you will be making money
five times as fast. Also, like their 1EXP bothers the 6EXP rendition of
of the Imp still drop a Harp every now and then.
Note: You may want to avoid random encounters by using a Wayfarer until reach
the next town and get some fire protection. Hellhounds use several fire
based attacks; in going it solo you'll want every advantage you can get
even if you're highly leveled ~ which you most likely are.
Note: The Lone Wolf is another item you may want to wait on. In general, item
hunting alone is bad idea and should be avoided whenever possible. Also
given how future parties are structured you will be unable to boost the
enemy ranks in this area significantly. Believe me, there's a good area
in the game's second half where Garms - a blue version of the Hellhound
that also drop the Lone Wolf - grow on trees.
Note: You'll need a Bomb Fragment for a small upcoming fetch quest; keep sure
to keep this in mind. Additionally, you don't have to wait for these to
drop - you can try to steal them as well.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Urbeth
===============================================================================
Note: Again, make haste to Urbeth in the North. Not only do you still have to
deal with Hellhounds, you also have to deal with Succubi. Succubi are a
pain to deal with one-on-one unless you have the right items equipped.
Note: Most current and future fights against Succubi are one-on-one. You will
want to equip your character with a Confuse Cape so they can keep their
sanity during the fight. In being able to block confusion most of their
turns will be wasted on attacks that can't connect.
Note: Personally, I'd recommend waiting on the Confuse Rings. There's another
dungeon coming up (still solo) where you'll encounter Succubi much more
often plus there will be other noteworthy drops in the area.
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Hidden Treasure Hunt)
===============================================================================
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Shopping)
===============================================================================
[ ] Bolt Sword**
[ ] Ice Pick (also available in Invidia)
Note: Even if you forget to buy an Ice Pick while in Urbeth or Invidia you'll
have the chance to obtain some later from Brandt Doppelgangers in Part1
(Rolan's Soul) and Part2 (Star Chamber/Rolan's Soul).
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Gifts)
===============================================================================
[ ] Trylion's Ring
[ ] Trylion's Ring
[ ] Trylion's Ring
Note: This is a really interesting intersection of item collection. If you're
looking to obtain four of each item it's best NOT to sell off Trylion's
rings and steal them. The 2,500 gil you get for selling them should not
be an issue at this point if you have been selling off gems and/or have
some Mythril. If you just want one of each item go ahead and sell them;
Trylion will give another party member another Trylion's Ring later.
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Store Event)
===============================================================================
Note: Not much of note here. Selling 20,000 worth of items in one day unlocks
the Seamstress crown (not hard to do if you have some extra items lying
around.) Feel free to sell off any equipment you have more than four of
- you won't need it. If you have been following this guide you probably
have tons of things to sell off.
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Starting Equipment: Yunita)
===============================================================================
Note: After doing Thauzand's Quest (but before going back to the Sorcerer and
continuing the story) you can talk to Yunita in the town square and she
will join the party. The interesting thing about this is you don't have
to do this until the next major event. In fact, adding her to the party
WILL NOT boost the number of enemies you face in battle outside of town
for better grinding, so it is rather moot. I'm not sure why I mentioned
it :P
[ ] Old Clothes*
THE BURNING QUESTION: THE DEMON AND THE DARK CAPE
Some players have begun to speculate that the Dark Cape may be the rare
steal from the Demon fought in Urbeth. Currently I can not confirm this
until I replay the game (I'm WAY past that point) but the theory is not
unfounded. There is no rare steal listed for the Demon / Arch Demons in
Brady's Official Strategy Guide. It's needless to say that some testing
needs to be done to fill in this gap of information but it's intriguing
nonetheless. Additionaly, there may be another way to obtain Dark Capes
that involves the boss Belphegor in the second half but that is another
theory that has yet to be tested.
===============================================================================
> World Map: On the High Seas (Enemy Drops/Steals)
===============================================================================
Note: The enemies on the seas are mostly the same as those encountered in the
Liberte Whirlpool the sole addition being the Ikkaku. If you didn't get
them earlier or want another pair Ichthons still drop Spring Gauntlets,
but there's a better opportunity later. Now that you can steal, you can
swipe Sleep Rings from Air Rays (if you didn't get them from the Lamias
in the Pirate Hideout) and Ikkakus drop Death Rings at the same rate as
Wights. The only problem is they do not come in large groups and appear
with other enemies.
Note: If you want to fight on the open seas for a while, be SURE you do it to
the SOUTH of Urbeth. If you go try and go NORTH past the peninsula, you
will regain control of the characters who're in Arbor. Don't worry, you
will still be on the high seas when you come back later.
Note: If you happen to forget the Wood Lance before losing access to the shop
in Arbor you can steal them from Hobgoblins in the second half of game;
it's their medium steal.
Note: As a last resort, Sacred Tree Staffs can be obtained in the second half
of the game from the Neko Natter (common steal).
===============================================================================
> Great Tree Roots (Starting Equipment: Torte)
===============================================================================
[ ] Sacred Tree Staff
[ ] Torte's Clothes
[ ] Blizzard Tome
[ ] Blizzara Tome
Note: Despite the fact they aren't one-of-a-kind items, take the Blizzard and
Blizzara Tomes from Torte before he leaves the party; you haven't had a
chance to purchase them yet. You should also take Torte's Clothes since
you won't be obtaining any more until you tackle the bonus content.
===============================================================================
> Great Tree Roots (Treasure Chests)
===============================================================================
[ ] #047: Great Tree Harp*
[ ] #048: Phoenix Down
[ ] #---: Animal Staff
===============================================================================
> The Great Tree (Treasure Chests)
===============================================================================
===============================================================================
> The Great Tree (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: With Torte in the party (and access to the Bandit crown) now is a great
time to return to the North Caves and fight Blood Bats for a few Bloody
Rings. Take note that this opportunity is short lived; Torte will leave
the party after this dungeon (this will reduce the number of enemies in
the aforementioned area). Also, there is a point of no return coming up
for this "group" in the near future.
Note: If you happen to miss out on the Wind Dagger do not fret; the Carbuncle
(who resides in many of the Arbor dungeons) carries it at the same rate
later in the game.
===============================================================================
> The Great Tree (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
[ ] Wind Cape / Boss: Arbaroc / rare (Treasure Chest: The Great Tree)
Note: Arbaroc is the first boss with an item that's worth stealing - the Wind
Cape. You found one Wind Cape in this dungeon already so you'll need to
steal three more. That's nice in theory, but how can one steal from the
boss more than once? It's actually quite easy:
Once you reach the Adventurer outside of Arbaroc's den turn one of your
characters into a Freelancer (you can equip the Gem Collector accessory
from the wireless store to circumvent this step) and set the other as a
Bandit (you can't change crowns on guest characters like Torte). Do not
equip for "serious" combat yet (and don't worry about the Wind Cape you
just got; we don't want to protect against wind attacks just yet). Upon
finishing this set up save your game by talking with the Adventurer.
Enter the den and attempt to steal from Arbaroc in combat. If you steal
anything other than the Wind Cape (you'll be seeing Phoenix Downs a lot
of the time) reset your DS. Continue to do this, entering the fight and
resetting until you grab the Wind Cape. Once you have obtained it, your
next goal is to THROW THE FIGHT!! Let your characters be defeated. When
you start back up at the save point in Arbor after your loss check your
inventory - you still have the Wind Cape you stole! Additionally, since
you had a Freelancer or a Gem Collector equipped you have lost no gems!
Repeat this until you have all the Wind Capes you want. Once done, have
your party defeat Arbaroc as you normally would to continue the story.
Before attempting this, you may want to equip your characters with Stun
Capes. Arbaroc uses light-based spells when airborne and this can cause
you to waste a lot of turns due to paralysis.
Note: Torte will leave your party once you return to Arbor and report back to
queen. Make sure to claim any important items from his inventory.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Snowfields outside the Ice Caverns West (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
[ ] Giant's Ring / Borgbear / rare (Sold: Urbeth)
Note: Having visited Urbeth, you can save yourself some work and just buy the
Giant’s Rings from Trylion's shop. However, since Borgbears occupy many
of the same places as Silkys, you'll probably obtain a few rings as you
wait for Silence Rings to drop (or you can attempt to cut out that wait
by stealing them but they are the creature's rare steal). This does not
apply if you've been using a Wayfarer to escape from battles that don't
have Silkys.
Note: Hold off on trying to obtain Silence Rings at the moment. There are few
things we will do in the short term to make obtaining them a little bit
easier. Also, you will definitely want to have an attack spell equipped
to deal with these things regardless of your class; physical attacks do
not have a good shot at hitting their mark. Silkys also inhabit the Ice
Caverns; you'll probably want to fight them there.
If you don't plan on using the Silence Rings in combat anytime soon you
can wait until the second half of the game to acquire them. If you wait
you'll be able to take advantage of the increased drop rate provided by
the Wraiths.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Snowfields outside the Ice Caverns West (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
[ ] Mythril / Mythritoise / common (Alt Drop/Steal: Rock Golem - Pt1)
Note: I mentioned stealing from the Mythritoises earlier in the section about
Arbor. For full disclosure on this enemy and how to abuse this for your
own personal gain (*devilish grin*) please refer back to that section.
===============================================================================
> Ice Caverns West (Treasure Chests)
===============================================================================
[ ] #058: Hi-Potion
[ ] #059: Intellect Ring
Note: Oh geez. There's a lot to note here and it's all very important....
Once you transform your character to enable them to squeeze through the
hole in the ground you will lose access to previous locations along the
path taken by Brandt (Horne, Guera and Arbor). Be SURE you've purchased
everything you need to from the stores in these areas and are satisfied
with the items you have collected from drops. You CANNOT BACKTRACK from
this point (and you can't go back with the other group using the Animal
Burrow). After falling down the hole you will automatically be switched
to Jusqua.
Also before taking this plunge, you will need to start planning for the
next boss. Like Arbaroc in Arbor, the next boss is a farmable source of
a certain item: Shine Capes. Since you can find one Shine Cape later in
a treasure chest you'll need to steal three more.
In the upcoming fight you'll need a Bandit & Freelancer (the Freelancer
isn't necessary if you have the Gem Collector accessory equipped on one
of your characters during the fight). I would highly recommend you make
Brandt the Freelancer - you will not have access to his inventory until
after you've farmed the steal a couple of times. You can have Brandt be
the Bandit but you need to keep AT LEAST three inventory slots open. In
other words, if Brandt's the Bandit you won't be able to view the Shine
Capes in his inventory until you beat the boss for the final time (they
are there however); if Jusqua's the Bandit you will be able to see them
the minute you reappear at the save point after losing.
Boy that was a mouth full....
===============================================================================
> Ice Caverns West (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
===============================================================================
> Ice Caverns East (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
Note: As Jusqua, make SURE you save at the second save point right before the
boss fight. Additionally, make SURE you change him into a Freelancer or
Bandit - which ever one you didn't turn Brandt into; see note above.
Note: Due to the lengthy turnover one experiences when trying to steal from a
boss like Behugemoth (see the following note) do not try and obtain the
Glimmer Gauntlets at this point. Other enemies drop them and in the end
you can just buy them in Spelvia during the second half of the game.
Note: If you've played the game before, you probably do not have to guess why
this is one of the MOST ANNOYING steals in the game to acquire. With so
many scripted events that take place before fighting the Behugemoth for
real (fighting the Sorcerer, some more talking, fighting the Behugemoth
with Jusqua alone and Brandt's arrival) you'll be spending lots of time
just getting to the point where you CAN steal. If coupled with the fact
you'll have to do this AT LEAST THREE TIMES (there's a Shine Cape to be
found in Spelvia Dungeons which will make four) you'll be insane by the
time you do it. If you want to avoid all this trouble you can wait till
the second half and steal Shine Capes from the random encounter version
of the Behugemoth (the "Behugemore") in the Ice Cavern and Star Chamber
during the second half of the game. I'd advise against doing that since
Shine Capes prove to be quite useful over the course of the game.
Additionally, don't think you can get away with stealing the Shine Cape
in the fight with just Jusqua alone. The developers of the game thought
of that: Behugemoth's items are different during this three turn fight,
the Potion you are most likely to steal - which is not available during
the second fight - proves that. This isn't to say the cape ISN'T one of
the steals during first fight (I haven't confirmed this - sounds like a
job for someone with more time than me to burn) but with three turns to
do it seems very unlikely.
Note: With the annoying Behugemoth and Shine Cape business out of the way, it
is the perfect time to acquire the drops and steals in the Ice Caverns.
What changed? Now that Jusqua and Brandt are back together, some of the
enemy encounters are a bit different. For example, instead of one Silky
you now fight two! A great place to grind for Silence Rings is the very
first room of the Ice Caverns you entered as Jusqua.
[ ] Darkness Axe **
[ ] Black Book**
[ ] Elementalist Robe** (also available in Spelvia)
[ ] Ranger Outfit** (also available in Spelvia)
[ ] Ice Pick
[ ] Flame Dagger
Note: If you happen to forget about the Darkness Axe during the first part of
the adventure they can be stolen from the Skeletons and Trollud Zombies
during the second half of the game. Regardless of which method used the
Axe is the given creature's medium steal.
Note: It should be noted that even if you do not buy the Black Book before it
disappears from the Invidia store front you will find one in a treasure
chest later. If you want to have more than one on hand in the future be
sure to by some before boarding the Dragon.
Note: The Shark Lance and Rekoteh's Clothes are not one-of-a-kind items. That
said, you should still plan on lifting them from Rekoteh before leaving
Invidia - another point of no return.
Note: During the events in Invidia that involve the Dragon Egg you don't have
to acquire the Mythril Hammer to continue on with the story; you can in
fact continue on by using a Firaga Tome from Urbeth. However, it should
be noted that the Mythril Hammer is a one-of-a-kind item, so you should
give a piece of Mythril to the weapon store vendor to claim it. This is
one of two quests that requires a piece of Mythril.
Note: With the Magic Key in hand, you can unlock the locked doors you've come
across in your adventure. While there are a few areas you can backtrack
to right now and use your shiny new toy the items you can obtain aren't
make-or-break right now. The guide will cover these areas in the second
half.
Note: Like the Glimmer Gauntlet, you can buy Dusk Gauntlets in Invidia during
the second half of the game.
Note: While mentioned earlier in this guide, it is important to note a change
in the item drop rates from Wights. The Death Ring now has an increased
chance of dropping (more than double than it was before) so if you have
not acquired any this is a great opportunity that extends the whole way
into Spelvia (Rolan's Soul).
Note: If your going to obtain for four of every item, make sure to grab three
more Shark Lances. There's one enemy in the later half of the game that
carries it as a drop (a normal encounter version of the Brainshark) but
the drop rate is very low.
Note: If you want to save some money you can steal a few Darkness Axes but in
all reality money shouldn't be an issue at this point. Do note that the
Darkness Axe disappears from Invidia's weapon shop after darkness falls
but they can be stolen (medium) from Skeletons and Trollud Zombies once
the second half the game begins.
[ ] Ocean Stave / Cowpel (7EXP) / common (Sold: Invidia - Pt2)
Note: The game finally gives you a break here. The Stream Cape is a breeze to
steal when compared to Wind and Shine Cape. You should have one in your
inventory from Liberte Whirlpool so be sure to steal three more. If you
forget there is another chance during Part 2 at the same rate :)
Note: Before playing the Dragon Harp near the Dragon Egg, be sure to play the
mathematics game in the center building of Invidia near the polar bear.
Scoring 250 points playing this simple yet clever game will net you the
Beastmaster crown.
Note: Before playing the Dragon Harp near the Dragon Egg make sure to unequip
Rekoteh of all her equipment. She may be accompanying Brandt and Jusqua
to their next location but you won't have another chance to fiddle with
her inventory. Furthermore, accepting the ride on the dragon is another
point of no return - make SURE you have taken care of everything around
Invidia. You'll still have access to Urbeth and Liberte through another
character.
===============================================================================
> Town of Urbeth (Gifts)
===============================================================================
Note: The Steel Sword (+5) does not count towards item completion. Despite it
being upgraded five times, the game still considers it a Steel Sword.
Note: Before heading into the Tower of the Sky give Mylion a piece of Mythril
for the Rainbow Boots. There's no need to equip them; you receive their
desired effect just by having them in your inventory.
Note: If you more or less "stole" Trylion's rings when playing as Jusqua this
will be your fourth Trylion's Ring. Again, there's no penalty for doing
this that I'm aware of... except the price of your immortal soul :(
Note: Now that you have the magic key you can unlock the attack item store in
Urbeth. I'd suggest buying everything you have an interest in now since
the store becomes a magic tome store in the second half.

> Tower of the Sky (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: For the most part the enemies on the first eight floors of the Tower of
the Sky are weak and mainly consist of enemies you've probably obtained
drops from. The sole exception is probably the Lone Wolf the Hellhounds
drop but again it's best to wait on those.
Generally it's the ninth floor that contains the enemies you'll want to
fight. Make sure to use the save point to your advantage. Also, it pays
to be a Bandit.
This is an ideal area to grind for the Confuse Ring from the Succubi; a
Confuse Cape is a great addition to render their annoying Entice attack
useless. The drop rate for the Confuse Ring from Succubi goes down more
than half in the second part of the game. Other drops include:
Note: I would suggest buying the Flame Gauntlets later. There is another drop
you can get here but I'd honestly suggest waiting until the second half
of the game when you have more characters to get that one.
[ ] Earth Axe / Rock Golem / rare (Alt Drop: Iron Golem - Pt2)
Note: Despite what I've written in previous versions of this guide, the Earth
Axe IS obtainable in the second part of the game from Iron Golems. Take
my advice wait for that opportunity - the drop rate is more than double
than it is here. Seriously, save your sanity :P You can also steal and
receive Mythril as a drop from the Rock Golems.
Note: It should be noted that crossing the rainbow into Spelvia Dungeons is a
point of no return. Make sure you have accomplished everything you need
to do in Urbeth and Liberte (you will be losing access to the Whirlpool
in Liberte for the rest of the game) - you will be able to return later
but only after some earth-shattering changes.
Note: The Cloud Penguins in the Spelvia Dungeon can drop Glimmer Gauntlets as
their rare drop. However, you may wish to skip out on doing this as you
will be able to buy them shortly into the second half of the adventure.
Note: While you can miss out on buying Shining Harps, it should be noted that
you can always find one in the Spelvia hidden treasure hunt. As long as
don't sell it off you'll have one on hand.
Note: This is your last chance to buy the Elementalist Robe and Ranger Outfit
as they are dropped from their given store's inventories in Part 2.
Note: Confusing as it may sound, Rolan's Soul is a one-shot dungeon that your
characters will be able to enter twice. You will be able to come and go
from the area as long as you don't defeat the boss. Once you defeat the
boss and exit the dungeon is sealed off. So if you miss out on the Hero
Armor the first time you have one more (abet limited) chance later. For
those who are wondering the treasure chest with the Hero Armor is found
it's underneath the staircase heading up to the four doors.
Note: Rolan's Clothes and shiny Thundara Tome are not one-of-a-kind items but
you should take them from him before he leaves the party - you have not
not had a chance to buy a Thundara Tome yet.
Note: This is the final chance you have to cash in on the increased drop rate
of Death Rings from Wights. After certain events take place in Spelvia,
the rate will go back down in future encounters (yet remain higher than
it was at the beginning of the game.)
Note: You can receive Cursed Blades as drops from any of the character-themed
doppelgangers; however, you can save yourself a lot of time by stealing
them from the Aire doppelganger - it is the common steal. You will find
the Aire Doppelganger in the rooms with the teleporting specters.
Note: It doesn't matter which Doppelganger you steal this from; they all have
it on hand at the same rate. The only question is do you steal it right
now or try to get it as a drop from the Ghouls in part two later: toss-
up!
Note: In case you forgot to purchase them (you can't go back to the stores at
a point this late before they are removed) you can steal Ice Picks from
the Brandt Doppelgangers and the Flame Dagger from the Yunita ones. The
Jusqua Doppelganger have Holy Knifes with them but you can buy these in
Spelvia during the second half of the game.
In case you miss this chance, these items are available from the second
version of the Doppelganger that appear within Rolan's Soul during Part
2; the Ice Pick from Brandt is a drop (medium) and Flame Daggers remain
a common steal from Yunita. On top of this, the doppelgangers from your
first trip into Rolan's Soul also appear in the Star Chamber.
Note: Freki's rare drop is a Stream Cape. The common drops are gauntlets that
reflect their element: Geri; Flame Gauntlet and Freki; Spring Gauntlet.
Note: Two words: DON'T and BOTHER. The structure of this fight makes it a bad
idea to reboot the game in a vain attempt to get either cape as a drop.
If you DO get one of the capes make sure you DO NOT give it to Rolan.
Don't worry, there's chance to claim some extra Flame Capes in the near
future through stealing; it is going to be somewhat annoying but not as
it would be getting one from here.
Note: Be sure you remove anything of value on Rolan prior to this fight; load
him up with gear from the shop back in Spelvia or some extra equipment.
You will not be able to access his inventory beyond the fight with Geri
and Freki.
Note: Despite the fact that there is another chance to steal the Lightbringer
in the future (the success rate goes down) I would suggest obtaining it
from Rolan during this fight. Also, if you combine the strategy used to
steal items from bosses multiple times with the Finder and Keeper moves
from the Merchant you can use this battle to farm diamonds.

Part 2: After Darkness .............................................. [HOL08]
===============================================================================
This part of the FAQ covers everything from the acquisition of the Party Host
and Hero crowns to the final confrontation with the evil being lurking at the
center of the darkness. That said, feel free to take a breather. A few things
have changed for the better. Your party is complete and will remain unchanged
and you only have to worry about one one-shot location: Rolan's Soul. Outside
of that you no longer have to worry about missing item drop opportunities; in
fact enemies will remain the same for the remainder of the game. Feel free to
gather Rolan's weapons at your leisure (there's no set order for your quests)
although I would suggest doing the events in Arbor and Mt. Glug first despite
the order they're in below.
However, before you head out make a quick trip to Urbeth. Sell off any excess
weaponry using the store-front mini game to streamline your inventory and max
your wallet for the massive loads of future purchases. If you abused stealing
mythril from the Mythritoise and have been selling off gems you should have a
TON of gil. 500,000 is more than enough to obtain four of each item you don't
currently have. The only store you won't have access to are those in the Town
of Horne but that will change.
Also, remember that if you opened a given treasure chest in the first half of
the game it is still empty. The only exception are six chests within the back
of the Pirate's Hideout. You did grab those the first time around, right?
Another suggestion that deals with the near future is which attacks to unlock
with the diamonds you received from the Rolan fight. If you want to make some
item acquisitions (steals) much easier, I'd suggest unlocking the Magic Might
attack on your resident black mage (Aire has the highest intellect by nature;
you'll want Magic Might to do lots of damage) and Pillage on your Bandit :)
===============================================================================
> Town of Horne (Treasure Chests: Magic Key)
===============================================================================
Note: Now that there are no points of no return impeding our progress, let us
take the time to nab a few trinkets.
[ ] #079: X-Potion
[ ] #080: Hi-Ether
Note: In the windmill where the above treasures are located you'll find a man
named Cid. Cid (*wink wink*) is of importance because he can give you a
quick run down of statistics of your current game. Generally, while all
the information is interesting it's the number of Treasure Chests found
that you should keep an eye on. We (well, you) want this to reach 100%.
===============================================================================
> Horne Caste (Treasure Chests: Magic Key)
===============================================================================
Note: The Cockatrice drops Poison Rings at a rate that is more than double of
the earlier Basilisks; Wyorms carry Earth Gauntlets at the same rate as
those big bad Big Worms. Both can also be found at the Quicksand Castle
where Cockatrices come in groups of three.
Note: Keep your eyes open for Neko Natters as you make your way to the end of
the Quicksand Castle. They drop Terra Staves at a greater rate than the
second version of the Cait Sith.
Note: If you didn't obtain any from the doppelgangers you encountered earlier
the Ghouls that roam around the Quicksand Castle drop the Curse Ring at
the highest rate seen in the game. Even better is the fact they come in
groups of threes!
Note: I just have to comment on how much I LOVE Jusqua's suggestion on giving
the Shield of Light to a healer. Why? Well, it's not really the low hit
point factor he mentions that makes me agree but the immunity to status
effects. It's wonderful when your healer can't be affected by sleep and
paralysis.
===============================================================================
> World Map: Outside Arbor (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: On the world map outside of Arbor you can find Giant Moths in groups of
four. This is a great chance to obtain Flash Rings as the chance of the
ring dropping is more than twice as high as it is from Batterflies.
===============================================================================
> Great Tree Roots (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: Vampire Bats come in fours down here (and in Mt.Gulg) and the drop rate
for the Bloody Ring is the same as it was when fighting Blood Bats back
in the North Caves during the first part of the game.
[ ] Tempest Pike / Hobgoblin / rare (Sold: Horne after Dark Fencer crown)
Note: While on the subject of Hobgoblins, if you missed the Wood Lance during
your first visit to Arbor you can obtain them from the Hobgoblins; it's
their medium steal.
[ ] Great Tree Sword / Fungus / rare (Steal: Carbuncle)
Note: To be honest it's not very hard to get a hold of Great Tree Swords. The
only thing you need to be aware of is the "To the Summit" part of Arbor
is a much better place to obtain them since you'll encounter Carbuncles</pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
and Funguses. Using a combination of steals from the Carbuncle (medium)
and drops from the Funguses you'll have them in no time. Also note that
if you missed out on the Wind Daggers from the Rattatox your first time
through Arbor Carbuncles drop them at the same exact rate.
===============================================================================
> Great Tree Roots (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
[ ] Rock Lance / Hobgoblin / common (Treasure Chest: Pirate Hideout - Pt1)
Note: Stealing Rock Lances from Hobgoblins is important because it's the only
farmable source of the item. Like Terra Staves you can't purchase them.
Note: This is a great time to obtain Lone Wolfs if you didn't obtain any from
the Hellhounds in the first half. Garms come in groups of three, making
this an ideal farming situation. Now that you have four characters this
is an EXCELLENT time to start using Wayfarers; place two of them with a
Bandit in your party and alternate which one uses Escape while having a
Black Mage smash enemies with Magic Might when you are not running. You
can pick and choose your fights and cut down on grinding with this kind
of strategy.
Note: I'm sure some are wondering how you can steal from Belphegor in a quick
and timely manner and no go insane trying to get those additional Flame
Capes. Well, there is a simple solution; the bad news is it most likely
requires your party to be at a high level, game beating levels of 40 to
45. However, given the recent change in the experience system it is not
hard to level up in Mt.Gulg with fights containing three/four enemies a
piece. If you've unlocked Magic Might on a Black Mage use it to destroy
these groups (and the Red Jellies before they merge) with super extreme
prejudice.
So how do you clear away the three cubes so quick that you will be able
to steal on the second turn? Magic Might. Have the black mage enter the
fight with enough AP so you can cast Magic Might on the first turn - if
you cause enough damage you'll take out all the cubes leaving Belphegor
ripe for a pillage attempt. (Note: If by some odd chance your bandit is
slower than your mage DON'T use Magic Might and Pillage during the same
round. Once in a while a cube will hold on with a few measly HP and you
will steal from that instead.) I'd highly suggest using Pillage instead
of Steal. Remember, until you steal the fourth and final cape you don't
want too much fire protection; your characters need to be vulnerable or
it will take eons to lose after a successfully stealing the Flame Cape.
Really, everything about this setup is about speed. Also, you MUST make
sure that your black mage uses Magic Might on the first turn; Belphegor
will probably kill your black mage on the next turn after their role in
this scheme is complete.
Seriously, it's not even funny how broken Magic Might is....
THE SECRET BEHIND BELPHEGOR'S ELEMENTAL AFFINITY??? (*Suspense*)
A scrap of untested information retrieved from Japanese websites on The
4 Heroes of Light has shed a little bit of light on Belphegor's ability
to change elemental affinities when struck with an element-based spell.
Not only does his weakness change in response to elemental attacks, the
element of the items he is holding (Bomb Fragment / Flame Cape) changes
as well - supposedly. So what does this mean? Belphegor starts with the
Flame Cape and Bomb Fragment as possible steals. If you attack him with
an Earth-based spell the Flame Cape turns into a Soil Cape and the Bomb
Fragment would turn into a Gaia Drum - an educated guess???? If true it
would be majorly important since it would become the only way to obtain
additional Soil Capes. Furthermore, at the moment I am not sure if Dark
is an element that Belphegor can assume. If he could change affinity to
Dark, that would (assuming - as discussed earlier - the Dark Cape can't
be stolen from the Demon + Arch Demon) mean one could obtain additional
Dark Capes as well.
This is all unsubstantiated at the moment (I had already beat Belphegor
in the Star Chamber by the time I read the post on the forums about the
change in items) but I will test it in the future. Again, I am not sure
when that will be but if anyone feels like testing it out please do so.
*** READER UPDATE ON BELPHEGOR'S ELEMENTAL AFFINITY ***
Recently I've recieved a message from a player who has tested the above
theory out in combat and found that the majority of this information is
correct. However, there are a few twists to be aware of. Here's part of
the message I recieved:
"...to confirm something in your Item Maximization/Checklist regarding
boss Belphegor's drops. Indeed, aside from his 'normal' drops (Bomb
Fragment/Flame Cape), the boss CAN drop [the] Soil Cape when his
attribute turns into [the] WIND element. Yes, WIND, not Earth, as I
got the Soil Cape right after he used Aeroga.
This is confirmed by me, I just got my 2nd Soil Cape from him (the first
one from the chest, as you might know already). I have yet to steal any
Stream Cape[s] from him, but given how Soil Cape can be stolen, I don't
see why [the] Stream Cape can't.
Oh, and fyi, Belphegor's elemental weakness can switch around between 3
elements: Fire, Water and Wind. When he's fire element, hit him with a
water spell. When he's water, hit him with Aero, and finally, when he
has wind attribute, hit him with a fire spell."
So, this confirms it is possible to get more than one Soil Cape per save
file AND disproves that his element can turn to dark to get more Dark
Capes. Thanks goes to Nobita for testing this out.
[ ] Quaking Harp / Arp / common (*only source of item*)
Note: Quaking Harps are one of the most common drops in the game - you should
have no trouble obtaining them. Just in case you didn't obtain a few of
them earlier Arps are a great source of Gale Gauntlets since their drop
rate for the item is more than double that of the Falcons.
Furthermore if you need Whispering Harps Arps are your best bet as it's
their medium steal (it is really insane how many items you can get from
the Arps.)
Note: Do due a host of errors in the Official Brady Games Strategy Guide, the
Icebrand drop requires a bit of explanation. The entry for Lizardman[A]
is actually the entry the for the Lizardhawk outside a couple of things
like the picture. Also, in the "encountered" field, I have no idea what
they're referring to with "Arbor North Area (Part II)" so your guess is
as good as mine.
Lizardhawks also appear in the Witch's Mansion - they appear three at a
time in the rooms prior to the Lamp of Truth - and Magic Laboratory. If
you need some additional Great Tree Swords the Lizardhawk can also help
you out with that as well if you have steal or pillage assigned to your
abilities.
Note: Take advantage of the Oceanus enemies in the Pirate Hideout - with them
appearing in groups of four and having the highest drop rate for Spring
Gauntlets this proves to be an excellent chance to nab them.
Note: In case you missed out earlier, Scyllas drop the Sleep Ring (rare) with
the same frequency the Lamias earlier.
Note: If you didn't obtain any from the doppelgangers you encountered earlier
the Ghouls that roam around the Spelvia Dungeons drop the Curse Ring at
the highest rate seen in the game. Even better is the fact they come in
groups of threes!
Note: If you're still looking for Cursed Blades the female Doppelgangers drop
them. They have a greater chance of dropping from the Aire Doppelganger
(medium) than Yunita rendition (rare). Also, all the doppelgangers (the
sole exception being the Yunita Doppelganger) drop Curse Rings as their
rare drop but you'll have a better chance (more than double) at getting
them from Ghouls in previous and future dungeons.
If you need them, the Brandt Doppelganger's medium drop is the Ice Pick
and Yunita's common steal once again is the Flame Dagger.
Note: If you've been holding out on the Silence Rings, now's the time to cash
in on the heightened drop rate provided by the Wraiths. It's their rare
drop.
Note: If you did not steal the Lightbringer off of Rolan at the end of Part 1
you have another chance to obtain them from Lucifer at a lower rate. If
you need to do this, I would suggest you use Plunder on the first turn.
Lucifer has an attack that robs your characters of their ability points
and you don't want deal with failures from steal because of that. If by
some chance you forget the Lightbringers, you'll have another chance at
the end of the game but since it is so far away from a save point it is
not suggested. Unfortunately, you might have to deal with this for some
other rare steals however :(
Note: There's not much to note when it comes to enemies. However, Nues appear
in twos on the bottom floor making it an great area to grab Stun Rings.

Note: If you passed up on it earlier like any sane person, the rare drop from
Iron Golem is the Earth Axe which has a greater chance of dropping this
time around :)
Note: In case you did not grab any from Invidia during the first part of the
game, the Darkness Axe is the medium steal from the Trollud Zombie.
Note: If you didn't obtain any from the doppelgangers you encountered earlier
the Ghouls that roam around the Invidia Underground drop the Curse Ring
at the highest rate seen in the game. Even better is the fact they come
in groups of threes!
Note: In case you missed out earlier, Scyllas drop the Sleep Ring (rare) with
the same frequency the Lamias earlier.
Note: Most of the enemies that are present in Underground Invidia also appear
in the Sun Temple.
Note: If you missed stealing them from the Trolluds in the Ice Caverns, Shade
Trolluds carry Hydraxes as their medium steal.
Note: Given that the boss of Invidia Underground is the same as it was in the
first part of the game (the Ice Dragon) you have another chance to grab
Stream Capes at the same rate as before. They will be very helpful in a
couple of future boss encounters.
Note: Most of the enemies that are present in Underground Invidia also appear
in the Sun Temple.

[ ] Claustrum / Boss: Mammon / rare (*this battle is only source*)
Note: This the your only chance to nab the Claustrum - Mammon's steals change
during her second appearance at the end of the game. Use the save point
near the boss and Pillage multiple Claustrums. Be sure to check out the
physical appearance of the Claustrum; it's thinly veiled reference to a
popular SquareEnix title.
Note: This is another instance where the Brady Games Strategy Guide drops the
ball. The maps in the Brady's guide show you this area, but they do not
show you that there is treasure here or - more importantly - how to get
there. I thought something was up with those maps :P
To get to this area, head over to Invidia. Call your dragon and land on
the cliff right above the exit to the Ice caverns. When your there, run
against the south side of the cliff heading east where the mountain and
cliff meet one another. It looks like nothing is there but you'll enter
this area instead.
In case you're wondering, this area links to the Ice Caverns where that
small "step" or "hump" prevents you from continuing.
Note: While it is possible to explore the Magic Laboratory before the Witch's
Mansion (you'll need to come here to witness a conversation to move the
story along) I won't be listing items, drops and steals until after the
Witch's Mansion.
===============================================================================
> Town of Horne (Shopping)
===============================================================================
[ ] Stormaxe
[ ] Book of Ramuh
[ ] Shaman Robe
Note: While these items technically DO disappear from the store in Horne upon
obtaining the Dark Fencer crown they're simply moved to the other store
that can be accessed by talking to the woman in blue in the same house.
[ ] Wood Shield
Note: Unlike the items above you DO lose access to the recently re-accessible
Wood Shield - keep this in mind BEFORE you obtain the Dark Fencer crown
in the Magic Laboratory.
[ ] Darkbringer / Satan / rare (Alt Steal: Satan - Star Chamber)
Note: This is the last easy boss steal in the game; beyond this point all the
boss steals are in the Star Chamber and require annoying treks. You can
also get the Darkbringer from Satan there as well but don't add to that
workload - steal it now while the save point is close.
Pillage is more important than ever before. You'll need your attempt at
robbery to take place on the first turn due to the fact Satan's attacks
are backed with a Lv.2 Dark base. Without adequate protection you won't
last long - especially if he launches an Arcane Force attack. If that's
giving you some trouble, try using the Hermes Sandals from the wireless
store in Urbeth/Spelvia to give your Bandit the first action.
[ ] Ribbon / Boss: Ogre Bear / only steal (Treasure Chest: Star Chamber)
Note: The Ogre Bear is tough but remember that we don't want to defeat it per
say. If you run into trouble you may want to invest in a pair of Hermes
Sandals so you get the first turn. Additionally, you will find a Ribbon
in the upcoming Star Chamber so you will only need to steal three. Also
remember that this fight can be used to farm diamonds and is considered
one of the best ways to make money.
===============================================================================
> Star Chamber (Treasure Chests)
===============================================================================
===============================================================================
> Star Chamber (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: If you missed out on stealing them from the 6EXP Orcs in the first half
the Sea Devils have a very small chance of dropping Shark Lances (rare)
after they're defeated.
Note: The Star Chamber is also home to the Tokkaku who has the highest chance
of dropping Death Rings (rare) in the game. Take advantage of this when
you can.
Note: If you've been holding out on the Silence Rings, now's the time to cash
in on the heightened drop rate provided by the Wraiths. It's their rare
drop.
===============================================================================
> Star Chamber (Enemy Steals)
===============================================================================
Note: Although it probably doesn't bear any explanation, due to the fact that
your crowns are locked upon entering the Star Chamber you won't be able
to steal or pillage right away. Keep this in mind and defeat the bosses
with steals you already have (Belphegor still has the Flame Cape, Satan
has the Darkbringer and Lucifer has the Lightbringer) or bosses with no
good steals (Asmodeus and Leviathan have nothing of note). It is bosses
like Mammon (Mammon's Spear) and Beelzebub (Necronomicon) that you want
to leave until you recieve the Bandit crown back for beating the second
henchmen. Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with the walk to each boss
after every failure/reboot which is quite annoying to say the least. It
is probably best to save at the bottom of B4 - this is a little quicker
than coming back via Cetus each time.
While making these treks, you'll want to employ a pair of Wayfarers for
their Escape command. Chances are you'll fail at getting the rare steal
and won't be saving so there is no point in fighting. It's also a great
idea to include a ninja in you party to lower the encounter rate.
Note: You can also obtain Necronomicons in the chest on the 90th floor of the
bonus dungeons. The item in this treasure chest is random however so it
is up to which way to go about getting the item. If you go the treasure
chest route you may want read up on the trick to refilling the chest in
the Item Completion Guide by ZorlockDarksoul. However it may be in your
best interest to steal a Necronomicon before tackling the bonus towers;
it proves pretty useful if you plan on using a black mage and the Magic
Might attack.
Note: In the second half of the Star Chamber you have the chance to encounter
the Behungemore - the random encounter version of the Behugemoth. Shine
Capes are the rare steal and the rare drop from this enemy if you're in
need.
Note: In the second half of the Star Chamber you will also have the chance to
fight the doppelgangers you fought the whole way back in your first run
through Rolan's Soul. The Ice Pick and Flame Dagger remain their common
steals.
===============================================================================
Part 3: Bonus Material .............................................. [HOL09]
===============================================================================
Part three tackles the optional areas of the game, namely the bonus towers. A
heaping helping of patience is required for this section as it's far from the
most engrossing section of the game. Really what is it with Japanese RPGs and
one-hundred floor dungeons? Well at least it's not as bad as the Abyss in the
third Wild Arms - you can save and even leave after every ten floors in these
ones :)
As for tips that can be employed throughout all four towers, keeping a couple
of Phoenix Downs on each character is a good idea (so you can conserve AP for
healing) especially before you obtain some Orihalcon and start upgrading your
armor and fighting the Doppelgangers in the Moonsand Ruins. Also handy if you
make use of a white mage is Ensuna which will only cost one AP if assigned to
a character of that class. Additionally, while it probably doesn't need to be
said your healer is obviouly your lifeline; make sure they have adequate gear
for the road ahead. I generally outfit my main healer with most of the pieces
of legendary armor to accomplish that but the sword of light can obviously go
to a physical attacker.
While you should always be on your toes while battling any kind of foe in the
bonus towers, the Doppelgangers that start appearing after you climb up a few
floors are your main concern here. These aren't the weaker ones you fought in
Rolan's Soul or the Star Chamber: these are the ones from the Witch's Mansion
when you obtained the Lamp of Truth. They're formidable foes and possess very
high magical defense. It is a good idea to use Darksteel Shields and the Dark
Cape to protect against dark damage in normal battles; especially with weaker
classes like black mages. However, as annoying as Doppelgangers are, they are
actually useful.
The Doppelganger: Friend and Foe...?
As infuriating as Doppelgangers are in the upper levels of the Moonsand Ruins
you need to look beyond that to see the real prize at hand. Each rendition of
the Doppelganger has a one-in-three chance (actually, it is a bit higher than
33%) of dropping an Amethyst. Amethyst can be sold for 2000G a pop. Not quite
as much as Diamonds go for (5000G) but not too shabby. If your going to fight
your way from the bottom to the top take a look at how many Amethysts you are
in possession of; if your almost maxed out sell some off to make some room to
obtain more. Remember that fifty Amethysts can net you 100,000G. Granted this
is not the fastest way to obtain money but if you fail to keep tabs on it and
have 99 gems on hand and earn more beyond that you're passing up free money.
[ ] Orihalcon / Boss: Bahumut / guaranteed drop (any dragon on floor 80)
Note: After receiving the Orihalcon make sure to take advantage of the chance
to leave the tower and upgrade your equipment. The added defense, magic
defense and attack power you'll gain by doing this will prove useful.
[ ] Krinjh's Robe / Boss: Krinjh / only drop (Initial Equipment: Krinjh)
Note: While you can receive Krinjh's Robe as a drop (the chance is quite high
actually) you can also attempt to steal it if you have a Bandit in your
party. I would definitely suggest doing that to double your odds.
Note: The prize for beating the boss on the 100th floor is the Ninja Crown.
===============================================================================
> Holy Tree Tower (General Tips)
===============================================================================
The Holy Tree Tower is ranked second in overall difficulty. Overall I felt it
was a step down in challenge from the Moonsand Ruins despite the fact enemies
seem a little hardier in the hit point department. Like the Moonsand Ruins it
should be noted that you should again keep a close tab on your Amethysts; the
battles against Greaps and Brainsharks are guaranteed to give you two a piece
and it adds up pretty quickly. Cloud Penguins also drop Amethysts but they're
not guaranteed. When gearing up for the boss on the top floor it is better to
stick with classes with physical attacks; while the boss does not prove to be
too difficult it is very adapt at reducing damage from magical blows. If your
magic damage too low it may be counteracted by its use of Cura and the battle
will end up a stalemate. (In other words I had this happen and it's not fun.)

> Holy Tree Tower (Treasure Chests)
===============================================================================
Note: To obtain these items quicker you'll probably want read up on the trick
to refilling the chest in the Item Completion Guide by ZorlockDarksoul.
===============================================================================
> Holy Tree Tower (Enemy Drops)
===============================================================================
Note: Ghouls appear on the lower floors of the Holy Tree Tower. In the second
half of the game they tend to be the best source of Curse Rings. Ghouls
do disappear from the enemy ranks the higher you climb in the tower but
the third rendition of the Wight pretty much takes their place and give
you another (yet lower) chance at Death Rings.
Note: Like the original Brainshark the normal encounter version still carries
the Shark Lance as a rare drop.
Note: If you're still in need of some Silence Rings Wraiths are pretty common
sight throughout the tower; they also have the highest drop rate in the
game for the item.
[ ] Orihalcon / Boss: Red Dragon / guaranteed drop (any dragon on floor 80)
Note: After receiving the Orihalcon make sure to take advantage of the chance
to leave the tower and upgrade your equipment. The added defense, magic
defense and attack power you'll gain by doing this will prove useful.
[ ] Torte's Clothes / Boss: Torte / only drop (Initial Equipment: Torte)
Note: Just like Krinjh's Robe you can steal Torte's Clothes directly from the
man (mouse) himself. Give yourself the extra opportunity by including a
Bandit in your party (you do not need an Elementalist for this fight as
Torte mainly attacks with non-elemental Leaf spells).
Note: The prize for beating the boss on the 100th floor is the Sage Crown.
The third tower - the Mysterious Lighthouse - certainly throws a wicked pitch
at the player. Unlike the previous two towers (where you can end most battles
before the enemy has a chance to fight back if you have a good setup) this is
far from the case here. Even if your characters levels are maxed most enemies
will be quicker thus you should be prepared to eat a lot of damage from enemy
attacks and be able to heal at a moments notice.
Things get a little more challenging once you reach the halfway point between
the 80th and 90th floors. It is here that Borgbears enter the enemy ranks and
they (coming in pairs of two) are NOT shy about using Whirl Bludgeon in their
effort to assault your entire party. The attack (unlike previous incarnations
of the bear) has a very solid chance of connecting :( If worst comes to worst
you may want to have a character or two assume the Wayfarer crown if you need
some down time to recover from a bad battle or skip the Borgbears altogether.
Note: The Behugemore (the random encounter version of the Behugemoth) appears
in battle in groups of two on the first fifteen to twenty floors of the
Mysterious Lighthouse. Use this chance to obtain additional Shine Capes
(rare steal and drop) if you need them.
Note: At about the point the Borgbears start appearing (floors 80 and 90) you
will also start encountering Wyverns. The rare drop from these monsters
is the Holy Lance and it's the only place to obtain them.
[ ] Orihalcon / Boss: Dragon / guaranteed drop (any dragon on floor 80)
Note: After receiving the Orihalcon make sure to take advantage of the chance
to leave the tower and upgrade your equipment. The added defense, magic
defense and attack power you'll gain by doing this will prove useful.
[ ] Rolan's Clothes / Boss: Rolan / only drop (Initial Equipment: Rolan)
[ ] Rekoteh's Clothes / Boss: Rekoteh / only drop (Initial Equipment:Rekoteh)
Note: Same drill as above - you can receive your adversaries clothes as drops
or you can try hand at stealing them.
Note: The prize for beating the bosses on the 100th floor is the Storyteller
Crown.
Things start to get a bit tricky in the last tower. One of the earliest enemy
formations to be very aware of is the fight with four Rattatoxs. Due to their
extremely high magic defense (even Magic Might with a +49 Necronomicon wasn't
enough to take them out) and their two attacks per round they can really take
a toll on the party if they choose to physically attack each time and pass up
on trying their hand at status attacks. Things calm down when Carbuncles take
the place of some of the Rattatoxs in that formation but Batterflies are more
than willing to take up the slack even though they are much less threatening.
On the seventieth floor the latest version of the fan favorite Basilisk makes
an appearance and while they aren't to common don't take them lightly as they
can wear down you party quickly with their two turns per round. The closer to
the top one gets Batterflies will make their annoying comeback with the their
attempt to stop the player with their high magical and physical defense :P
[ ] Orihalcon / Boss: Black Dragon / guaranteed drop (any dragon on floor 80)
Note: After receiving the Orihalcon make sure to take advantage of the chance
to leave the tower and upgrade your equipment. The added defense, magic
defense and attack power you'll gain by doing this will prove useful.
[ ] Adventure's Garb / Boss: Adventurer / only drop (steal during this fight)
Note: Once again, you can double your odds at receiving the Adventurer’s Garb
by attempting to steal it.
Note: The prize for beating the boss on the 100th floor is the Scribe Crown.

Item List: Item Maximums and Acquisition ............................ [HOL10]
===============================================================================
Below you will find a complete list of items in The 4 Heroes of Light and the
maximum number of each item that's obtainable by the player. You'll also find
the availability (the frame of time the item is available) and if missing the
item is possible. Finally, the last column gives the reader a quick glance at
how on they can on go about getting the item. Below that is a complete glance
at how to obtain the item.
Note: Not all methods of acquisition are created equal. For example, stealing
is a listed method of acquisition for the Death Ring but in general you
should NOT try to steal them. The only stealable Death Ring in the game
is from a boss; once you factor in things like the low success rate and
the farming techniques used you are much better off waiting for them to
drop from Wights, Ikkaku and Tokkaku. Do keep this in mind and remember
the walkthrough above takes all of these things into account.
Also be aware there are some items marked as buy that may not always be
available. One of the most famous examples of this being tranquilizers.
Players will have to get these as drops and steals from monsters in the
second half of the game as there's no store that sells them after dark-
ness falls. (Despite what the Brady Games Strategy Guide implies in its
besitary there are enemies that drop tranquilizers.)

Note: It has recently come to light through certain Japanese websites about
The 4 Heroes of Light that Soil Capes - and possibly Dark Capes - may
be obtainable from the fights with Belphegor. The general gist is his
steals may change depending on the last element-based attack he's hit
with. So, if you attacked him with Quake, this would change the Flame
Cape into a Soil Cape and after that change is when you would want to
steal. This is completely unconfirmed at the moment however - (I need
to replay the game to confirm.)

The Essentals: Items That Can Be Missed ............................. [HOL12]
===============================================================================
Below is perhaps the most important section of the FAQ: a list of the items a
player can permanently miss out on when playing The 4 Heroes of Light. Keep a
close eye on this list if you're going to try and obtain all of the items the
game has to offer.
006: Tranquilizer
-------------------
In reality you can not miss out on Tranquilizers but it is important to note
that you will be unable to buy them in the second half of the game. You will
have to rely on enemy drops and steals to acquire them beyond this point.
007: Antidote
---------------
Same deal as the Tranquilizer.
026: Hunting Horn
-------------------
While it's extremely unlikely, CAN miss out on the Hunting Horn if you don't
take it from it's treasure chest in the Pirate Hideout before darkness falls
and the chest is refilled. Again, highly unlikely and most likely the result
of sloppy play but possible.
083: Krinjh's Sword
---------------------
You can miss out on Krinjh's Sword if you do not to remove it from him prior
to the fight with the Sand Devil at the end of the Quicksand Castle.
087: Earth Sword
------------------
Technically you CAN'T miss out on the Earth Sword but you can easily lose it
a few seconds after you get it. Make sure when distributing the after battle
spoils from the Sand Devil fight you DO NOT assign the sword to Krinjh.
088: Bolt Sword
-----------------
You can buy an unlimited amount of Bolt Swords in Urbeth, but once you cross
over the rainbow into the Spelvia Dungeons this opportunity draws to an end.
Additionally, you lose access to the Liberte Whirlpool at this point as well
which is the only area where you can find the Bolt Sword in a chest.
117: Wood Axe
---------------
The Wood Axe presents the player with a double whammy; it is a one-of-a-kind
item and possible to miss out on permanently. Be sure to obtain it from it's
given treasure chest within the Guera Caverns before beating the boss at the
end of the Quicksand Castle.
122: Mythril Hammer
---------------------
Another item that is easy to miss if you don't follow Brandt's advice on the
Dragon Egg in Invidia. To acquire the hammer give the town's weapon dealer a
piece of Mythril after the party finishes their conversation on how to hatch
the egg. Sleep at the inn and return to the vendor to recieve the hammer.
120: Darkness Axe
-------------------
It's impossible to miss out on the Darkness Axe; what you can miss out on is
making the acquisition of them as painless as possible. Darkness Axes can be
purchased in Invidia during the first half of the game prior to boarding the
Dragon to Spelvia. They can be stolen from Skeletons (in Underground Invidia
or on the world map) before this as well. There are no stores that carry the
Darkness Axe in the second portion meaning if you passed them up you'll have
to rely on stealing them (from Skeletons and Trollud Zombies) to add them to
your arsenal.
134: Black Book
-----------------
Technically you can't miss out on the Black Book - there's one in a treasure
that is always obtainable. What you CAN miss out on is having more than one.
If you want to have more than one Black Book available later, be sure to buy
some in Invidia before boarding the Dragon to Spelvia.
148: Claustrum
----------------
The Claustrum is the rare steal from Mammon in the Sun Temple. This fight is
the only source of the item (her steals change during her second appearance)
and the opportunity is lost once she is defeated. Be sure to use the farming
techniques for bosses to get more than one!
171: Earth Bow
----------------
The situation that presides over the Wood Axe goes for the Earth Bow; a one-
of-kind-item in a treasure chest that rests in a location that is eventually
sealed off: the Liberte Whirlpool (???). As long as you have not crossed the
rainbow into the Spelvia Dungeons you can go back and get it but beyond this
point the item is lost.
175: Stardust Bow
-------------------
The story behind the Stardust Bow is simple; it is sold in Spelvia up to the
point where the party leaves after acquiring the Party Host and Hero crowns.
The store's inventory will change after this point and the Stardust Bow will
be lost if you didn't acquire it prior.
188: Shining Harp
-------------------
The Shining Harp is just like the Black Book above. It's sold in Spelvia for
a limited time (until the Party Host and Hero crowns) but can be obtained in
the Spelvia's hidden treasure hunt. So no matter what you do - less you sell
it - you'll have access to at least one. If you want more than that you will
definitely want to buy them while you can.
194: Knife
------------
If you are looking to obtain all the items in the game, you MUST buy a Knife
from Liberte or Urbeth before hitting a point of no return like the boarding
the Dragon in Invidia or crossing the rainbow into the Spelvia Dungeons. The
stores that carry the Knife do not carry it in the second half of the game.
197: Flame Dagger
-------------------
Truth be told you can't miss the Flame Dagger; you can steal it from certain
versions of the Yunita Doppelganger. However, you can just make it easier on
yourself and remember to buy it before it disappears from the storefronts in
Invidia and Liberte.
198: Ice Pick
---------------
Same deal as the Flame Dagger only it's stolen/dropped from certain versions
of the Brandt Doppelganger. Make your life easier by buying it in Invidia or
Urbeth before proceeding past a point of no return.
202: Stun Stiletto
--------------------
Just like the Knife you'll need to buy the Stun Stiletto before you complete
the first half of the game - or more specifically - before you transform and
enter the hole in the ground in the Ice Caverns as Brandt. It's dropped from
the items stocked by the store in Arbor when you revisit later.
210: Wood Shield
------------------
The Wood Shield is truely interesting because it's availability varies a few
times over the adventure. First off all, you CAN NOT miss the Wood Shield as
one is found in a chest in Horne Castle. You can also buy them at this point
but as most know that doesn't last long. One you reach Urbeth and beyond you
will have the chance to buy them again but chance doesn't last either as the
shield is dropped from that store in the second half. Upon retrieving all of
Rolan's legendary weapons it becomes available in Horne again but ONLY until
you obtain the Dark Fencer crown. After this the shield's lost again and NOT
moved to the other store one can access by talking to the woman in blue. So,
as you can see, you will have several chances to buy Wood Shields but in the
end the chances are limited and could can cause you to miss out on obtaining
more than one.
227: Elementalist Robe
228: Ranger Outfit
--------------------
The situation faced with the Elementalist Robe and Ranger Outfit is pretty a
common one. Basically, you should buy these in Inivdia or Spelvia before the
acquisition of the Party Host/Hero crowns since the stores that carried them
won't in the second half.
305: Stream Cape
------------------
Unlikely as it may be (it's really an extreme case scenario) if you miss the
Stream Cape in the Liberte Whirlpool - by proceeding past the rainbow - fail
to get it as a drop from Freki and don't steal it from the either Ice Dragon
you CAN miss out on the Stream Cape. That's a lot of screw-ups however.
330: Silence Cape
335: Sleep Cape
-----------------</pre><pre id="faqspan-7">
Just like the Stun Stiletto you need to buy these before proceeding past the
point of no return in the Ice Caverns with Brandt. They're only available in
Arbor before darkness falls.
342: Apollo's Talisman
------------------------
I'll be honest here; I'm not really sure what the cutoff point for this item
is. Failing that, just be sure to talk to Apollo in Liberte when his parents
return from being rescued from the Pirate Hideout.
343: Inherited Ring
---------------------
This is another item where knowing the true cutoff point is hard to discern.
Well, there is a certain point where you obviously lose out on the item; the
moment you talk to Aire in the Witch's Mansion, but the chance could be lost
before this. Just to be safe talk to Kuore after talking with King Horne but
before leaving town for the first time to go to the Witch's Mansion.
344: Trylion's Ring
---------------------
To be honest you shouldn't miss out on obtaining at least ONE Trylion's Ring
but if you fail to talk to Trylion as Yunita in Urbeth you could miss out if
you didn't swipe the three she gave to Jusqua. Again, there is no penalty in
not selling off the initial batch!
345: Rainbow Boots
--------------------
You can't miss the Rainbow Boots, you'll need them to proceed with the story
and you will be able to trade for them when that time comes. However, if you
want more than one pair you will need to buy them in Liberte before you make
your trek across the rainbow into Spelvia.
116: Stormaxe / 130: Book of Sylph / 132: Book of Ramuh / 238: Shaman Robe
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
These items are of note because while it seems they disappear from the Horne
store they're moved to the other store that one can access by talking to the
woman in blue in the same house. HOWEVER, as was mentioned earlier, the Wood
Shield FAILS to make this transition.

PiperStarfireGilmore: His/her (? - don't want to be sexist) item/weapon lists
as well as the list of the items that are lost from the
game's shops were more than helpful. I'm sure the guide
would have been even more helpful if I did not have the
had the Official Brady Games Strategy Guide on hand for
my first playthrough. This document is also designed to
work in tandem with that FAQ hence the format and order
of events and items.
ZorlockDarksoul: For his Item Completion FAQ and some answers in the archives
that informed me of the secret entrance for the Ice Caverns.
Because it was buried on the board I included it in the FAQ.
He also reminded me of some of the spells certain characters
start out with.
Dragon Fogel: For pointing out you don't lose access to the Liberte Whirlpool
until you cross the rainbow into Spelvia Dungeons.
ShadowofGlenn: His work on his 100% Completion Guide was more than helpful in
giving me a method to double check my work.
Nobita: For testing out and confirming the Soil Cape theory on Belphegor. Was
more than helpful.
FF4HoL GameFAQs Board: While I can't really remember which members posted the
tricks (like how you steal from bosses more than once)
I'm sure they'll be helpful in creating this document.
SquareEnix: I'll bite my tongue on some certain things and just say I'm happy
that a game like The 4 Heroes of Light managed to make it here to
America. Again, it's probably the newest title I've liked despite
it's older playing style.
Matrix: For developing Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and their work on
Final Fantasy III on the DS.
Brady: The Brady Games Strategy Guide was very useful despite it is problems.
A good bit of the information in this guide would have been impossible
to extrapolate from the game itself so for that reason I would suggest
buying it. Again, I won't be making direct references to drop rates to
maintain a healthy boundary due to copyright. Additionally, if not for
their strategy guide I might not have bought the game to begin with.
Nintendo: For creating the Nintendo DS. I am not quite the Nintendo fan I was
when the Super Nintendo was out but their handhelds tend to be more
attractive than their consoles these days.
Video Game X-Change: An GREAT mom and pop store that has replaced Gamestop in
my heart and mind. As you would expect, it's SO nice not
to have to go on e-Bay for older games and shell out for
overpriced titles (Mega Man VII is NOT worth $70-80 IMO)
and the store is the reason my collection - and interest
in gaming - has rebounded from the point of extinction.
