This guide is for the US version of Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. The European (Tokyo
Highway Challenge 2) and Japanese (Shutokou Battle 2) version may be slightly
different. To my knowledge there are six cars found in the US version that the
JPN game is missing and one car JPN has that the US doesn't have. Some other
difference between the two versions is that the US version is supposedly more
refined (it fixes or minimizes some of the problems the JPN version has such as
automatic resets, freezing, camera glitches and slowdown). There are couple
others differences but this is not the topic of the guide.
I made this FAQ because when I got into this game, one of the main questions
that soon came to mind was, how do the different models of the same car compare
with each other, given that there are quite a few versions available and the
price can sometimes vary greatly. Take the Nissan Skylines and Subaru Imprezas
for instance. You've got ten different versions, sometimes even belonging to
different classes. Most cars however will have at least one other version.
After some research, I found out that these models are based on the year(s)
they were produced, the body type (there are coupes, sedans, wagons and
hatchbacks) and sometimes modifications made to the engine or car's appearance.
The performance may or may not differ significantly. Based on the list I've
compiled below, you'll be able to find out what difference (if any) exist among
the different models. You'll also be able to see how your favorite cars rank
among others in its class. For those tight on credit points or just starting
out, this guide can be particularly helpful in deciding which cars to buy. One
of the few things I noticed is that the modified or more expensive versions are
not necessarily the better choice. Check out my results.

_______
METHODS
_______
The results here are based on all the cars I test drove, fully upgraded. This
was done by going to the time attack mode of the game where you have the oval
tracks to get the acceleration stats (400 m is the equivalent to a quarter
mile). To get the top speed, I drove along the long coastal highway--Route B.
You should peak on the tunnel around 5.7 miles heading Wangan up or if you
choose the other direction, about 4.2 miles just before the tunnel heading
Wangan down.
My gear ratios were generally set on the hybrid method, trying to achieve good
acceleration at the same time reaching near the highest top speed possible.
That said, there is probably a little more room to improve the acceleration
than top speed. The turbo setting were not tampered with (i.e. they are on
default). In the future, I might update this to include all the gear ratios I
used to get the above results.
_______
RANKING
_______
What are the best cars in each class? In this section, I try to answer this by
ranking cars based on a performance index I devised. I'm not going to go into
the details of this but basically I assigned a numerical value based on each
cars stats in speed, acceleration and roughly, handling. Upgrading cars with
new parts and tweaking their gear ratios boosts the PI. This results in some
fully upgraded class C outperforming other fully upgraded class B cars. Same
goes with class B and A cars. I used a letter grading system here, A (best) to
D (worst). C is average so you should try to avoid choosing cars below this as
much as possible since they are at the bottom of their class.

To improve your car's performance, you must buy/upgrade parts and/or tune it.
This can take a lot of time but it's well worth it especially if you like to
maximize your car's performance and get better time attack records. It is
worth mentioning that SPEED and ACCELERATION mainly measured here are just two
of the car's performance indicators. Others which I unfortunately have not
been able to assess in any accurate way that need to be taken into account are:
HANDLING - ability to grip the road and turn with ease
BREAKS - ability to reduce vehicle's speed
ENDURANCE - ability to continue driving at peak performance
You may enhance the handling and breaks by tweaking the cars shocks, spring
rate, break balance, etc. In some of these parameters, you may notice that
they can vary greatly. The Honda Integras have incredible breaking power. In
contrast, the Toyota MR2s appear to have very weak breaks. In term of
endurance, I doubt you're able to control or boost this ability much other than
to keep the turbo settings at a minimum or go back to the garage every few
miles. Otherwise, you may notice that starting between 20 and 30 miles on the
trip meter, you'll start to hear the tires screech more (as you lose gripping
power) and your car drops in speed and acceleration.
