III. General Information
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Welcome, Heavy Metal fans, to the Geomatrix!
-=[ Background ]=-
[taken from manual]
"At the end of the 21st century, the development of
Nanobot technology allowed people to live in cyberspace with the same ease
as living in the real world. Exhilarated by the freedom of cyberspace,
people soon became oblivious to incidents in the real world.
Suddenly, a catastrphic event shook the inhabitants of Earth wide awake.
Huge meteorites pummeled the Earth, melting the ice in Antarctica and
causing global waters to rise to flood levels.
Most of Earth's continents were submerged. Numerous lives were lost as people
made a frantic scramble for higher ground. Within a short time, what little
land remained was subject to militant control by a powerful government.
People were herded into cramped underground cells or onto high mountain peaks
where the air was almost too thin to breathe.
While most people continued logging into cyberspace as an escape, some
innovative thinkers were developing new possibilities. They experimented with
using Nanobot processes to reverse-trace their bodies into the land. It soon
became possible to sneak into tightly guarded land from cyberspace.
Now, intense conflicts are breaking out as hordes of homesteaders compete
to grab up real land through cyberspace. Protectors and plunderers are
locked in bloody battles. Earth is no longer a place of peace - an era of
power wars has begun! Dominance in cyberspace is essential to living in the
real world, now!"
-------
So now you know why you're here. Now go ahead and forget about it. The only
thing you really need to know about this game is that you will crank up your
stereo, and run around frantically screaming at your Dreamcast as Di and
Lance clobber you again. :) Welcome to the Geomatrix, friends!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-=[ Modes ]=-
* Arcade
The original arcade mode. Make your way through 8 levels, populated by
our heroes.
* Chaosmatrix
An extra mode just for us Dreamcast owners! Sort of a puzzle set,
providing a variety of levels and challenges with different objectives
for the ambitious 'lil Nethack. Has a computer-generated feel, with
wireframes and all the goodies included! Complete your objectives
(kill so many people, grab so many items), and find your way to the exit
(over high hurdles and through destructable terrain!) to clear the stage.

-------
As you can see, there are basically three types of characters: boys, girls,
and brutes. All the male leaders of the teams have 2 speed, 2 power, and 2
vitality. Their female counterparts have 3 speed, 2 power (Mayfly & Kassey
only have 1), and 1 vitality. Each team (except for the 707 Metalheads)
also has a brute, with 1 speed, 3 power, and 3 vitality. So what's the big
difference between the characters? Personal preference (who fits your
style), and their starting weapons.
For instance, Duke starts out with a Killer Sword: great for hand-to-hand
combat! But it might be much more your taste to use Hound, who starts out
with the Motogun (which is my personal favorite weapon). But then, maybe
Hound annoys you, and you really like Mayfly as a character. Sure, she
starts with a Sniper Rifle... but nothing says you can't go grab a Motogun
from the Arena later!
It isn't incredibly important which character you pick, they all basically
operate the same way. Their stats do vary slightly, hence some will be more
difficult than others, and some start with a melee AND ranged offensive weapon,
so find someone who suits your taste; you might be stuck with 'em for a while!

-=[ Controls ]=-
The controls for HMG are very intuitive. Okay, not really. Fact is, they're
just very simple, and shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes to really get
the hang of. But they do go a bit deeper than face value, due almost entirely
to weapon context, which will be explained further down under Adv. Controls.
There are no real combos, so don't worry about H. punch, or L. kick.
All you need to know is how to pull the trigger, and sock somebody if they
get a bit too close! Let's define the buttons and their functions on your
controller.
X button - Fire weapon
Y button - Change target
B button - Jump
A button - Melee attack
Right Trigger - Special-fire
Left Trigger - Slide
Analog pad / D-Pad - Movement
Start button - Pause
-=[ Adv. Controls ]=-
Your attacks differ depending on the weapon you're carrying, which can be
disorienting at first. Don't worry, you'll pick it up soon enough! Below
we'll see the same table as above, but a bit more cluttered with some
modifiers and possible secondary functions.
[note - "gun" will also refer to traps, unless otherwise noted]
X button - Fire weapon
* When not holding a weapon, performs a kick capable of occasionally
knocking weapons & items from the hands of your opponent!
* If equipped with just a gun, or a sword / gun combo,
will fire the gun.
* If equipped with only a sword, performs a rapid sword combo.
Y button - Change target
* No special functions
B button - Jump
* Press again in mid-air to perform a flying slide, which can be done
twice before coming back to the ground. With a jetpack this can be done
4 times before descending.
A button - Melee attack
* Without weapons, this button will throw successive punches and then a
kick, which (if you complete a 4-hit combo) will sometimes knock weapons
& items from your opponents' hands! Note that if you have just a trap
equipped, it still functions as though your hand was empty.
* If just a small gun is equipped, will throw a punch, then a knee, then
a backhand with the weapon, but won't knock anything out of your opponents'
grasp.
* If just a large gun is equipped, will let loose a straight kick,
leaving you time to take a shot with your weapon.
* If just a sword is equipped, will perform a heavy lateral swipe.
* If a small gun & sword are equipped, will perform a sword combo:
Killer Sword - One slash
Ray Sword - 4-hit combo
Hard Sword - 3-hit combo
* IF a large gun & sword are equipped, will perform a sword combo:
Killer Sword - One slash
Ray Sword - 2-hit combo
Hard Sword - 2-hit combo
Right Trigger - Special-fire
* When weaponless, will perform a heavy punch capable of sometimes
knocking weapons & items from your opponent (and lets out a verbal taunt).
* When used with a gun (or a sword / gun combo), will fire the gun's
secondary-fire mode.
* When used with just a sword, will execute an upward stroke & jump, and
if pressed again a downward slash during the character's descent.
Left Trigger - Slide
* When equipped with just a sword, Slide then attack to perform an
overhead leap / slash.
Analog pad / D-Pad - Movement
* Doubletap to slide
Start button - Pause
* The manual says it will taunt as well as pause, but I can't seem to
fathom how that would work. Anyone know? Email me!

-=[ Weapons & Items ]=-
[quotes taken from manual]
* Swords
-=[ Hard Sword - "A standard sword. It swings fast, so it's good for
close combat." ]=-
Just a normal sword, nothing special. ]=-
-=[ Ray Sword - "Slower than the Hard Sword, it can make successive
attacks." ]=-
Ooo, it's bloo and all electrical-ie! ]=-
-=[ Killer Sword - "It has a long reach and delivers the most serious
damage." ]=-
Very big. Yes. ]=-
* Guns
-=[ Handgun - "Though the damage it delivers is small, you can shoot
it fast." ]=-
Not as bad as you'd think! It's special-fire does little damage, but
will get you running again quickly, and keep you on your feet. ]=-
-=[ Moto Gun - "Fire rapidly by holding down the Attack button." ]=-
Do I have to put the clutch in before I pull the trigger? Rev it up,
and shoot 'em down! Make sure you have a clean shot before you 'off
the special-fire. ]=-
-=[ Shotgun - "Its spray of bullets practically guarantees a
hit." ]=-
A good weapon for offing people trying to run with just a wee bit
of health left. Use at close range for a nice wallop (and a high
combo number!). Special-fire looses a large four-shot cluster,
good for tagging brute characters. ]=-
-=[ Flame Thrower - "Attack in a wide-range, but the reach is
short." ]=-
Like 'em deep fried? Spray it around a little to attack 2 targets
next to each other. Special-fire lays out a few firebombs, which
expand into small columms of tall flame, torching whoever walks
into them. ]=-
-=[ Spray Gun - "Paint the opponent into oblivion." ]=-
Lots of fun (not so much when used on you)! Either sprays side
to side, or straight forward in a stream with the special-fire.
When it hits an opponent, their screen will be filled with
airbrushed insults. Asskick. ]=-
-=[ Missle Launcher - "Fire homing missles." ]=-
Killer weapon! Fire off lots of relatively large missles, which
home in on their target. Special-fire spits out 2 slower moving
missles, which do more damage (duh). ]=-
-=[ Hyper Bazooka - "Create the most damage with a pyrotechnic
explosion." ]=-
Very powerful, very slow. Good luck actually hitting someone.
Better used with the special-fire to hit multiple opponents. ]=-
-=[ Long-Range Missle Launcher- [no manual exerpt] ]=-
Very limited homing capability, can (in the right instances)
do a good deal of damage to 1 or 2 characters with the special-
fire, which releases mini-missles from the top of the launcher.
Great range, as you might have guessed. ]=-
-=[ Sniper Rifle - [no manual exerpt] ]=-
With targets moving so fast, don't expect easy aiming! Nice
damage, using the special-fire will fire a very slow projectile
which creeps towards the intended target. Lots of these in the
air make it hard on your opponents. ]=-
-= [ Laser Rifle - [no manual exerpt] ]=-
Fires a huge laser beam which you can direct. Great for medium
to long-range, and can even be used, on occasion, to get some extra
hits in during a short-range bout. Special-fire sends laser projectiles
like the Sniper Rifle's,which are fewer, but move much more quickly. ]=-
* Traps
-=[ Booby Trap - "Set it on the ground. It will capture any opponent that
touches it." ]=-
Brings up a big electrical net to shock its occupant. Won't do any
damage, but will keep 'em occupied and force them to drop their weaponry.
No special-fire, here. ]=-
-=[ Satellite Missle - "Attack your enemy from the air." ]=-
Gives you an overhead view so you can drop bombs on your enemies, but
you'll remain immobile. Make sure you've got cover! Special-fire drops several
large bombs from the sky in a line in front of you (without switching views),
but uses half your ammo. ]=-
-=[ Trick Bomb - "Throw it at an enemy or set it on the ground to
explode." ]=-
'Bout says it all, yo. ;) ]=-
* Items
-=[ Jet Pack - "Allows you to move faster." ]=-
Also lets you slide in mid-air twice as many times as you could
normally. ]=-
-=[ Life Up - "Recovers your character's vitality." ]=-
Just in Chaosmatrix Mode. ]=-
-=[ Infared Scope -"Allows you to see enemy traps." ]=-
Um, yup. ]=-
