01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Asterix and the Magic Cauldron' for the ZX Spectrum, released by
Melbourne House in 1986. It was also released on the C64 and CPC. You can use
this walkthrough for either version.
Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
The magic cauldron the potion is brewed in has been accidentally shattered into
five pieces (although the game description speaks of seven?) which our heroes
Asterix and Obelix must recover.
You play as Asterix, although Obelix always tags along. His main purpose is to
drive you along because when he gets hungry, he will want to eat a boar! You
start off with five boars and if you do not catch more then the game is over.
Boars are in neary all the forest areas. If you use the walkthrough to get
through the game you will most likely automatically be all right as long as you
do not avoid all of the fights all together.
Controls: (ZX)
`````````
Up - Q
Down - Z
Left - I
Right - P
Fire - SPACE (in combination with the directions above, for example uppercut
or leg sweep - you must press Fire first!)
Fighting:
`````````
When you approach an enemy soldier, a wild boar or even just an item lying on
the floor, a zoomed in fighting window will appear. Naturally you do not have
to fight cauldron pieces, so it is just a matter of walking through it to get
back on the main area screen. However, when fighting a foe you will both have
stamina bars on the sides which indicate your energy. When the energy runs out
the bout is over. If that was you then you lose a live, which happens to start
out at five as well. If you beat a wild boar it is added to your counter in the
top left.
You can also surrender in a fight to a Roman soldier, by simply standing in the
corner. This will take you to the prison cells from which you can escape after
a while if you hold a key in your inventory.
Even if you get beaten, the upside is that the enemy is gone from the screen.
If at all possible, try to avoid fights! Usually there is a way to escape by
running away or have the enemies get stuck in scenery objects such as trees or
rocks.
Map:
````
The map is not really too big, but gets a little complicated because some
directions will lead you to other screens somewhere else on the map. I have
seen maps online but making such a map in ASCII would probably be too ugly and
unclear. I have no plans to re-create an image right now as the walkthrough is
all you need to get by. I should still mention this though in case you want to
go exploring on your own.
Items:
``````
You can use your phial of magic potion if you are in real need. You only have
one for the entire game so you better not waste it! By following the
walkthrough you will know when to use the phial and I highly suggest you keep
it for then.
Keys open up cell doors if you have been captured. If you do not have a key you
are doomed and have to restart the game.
Scores:
```````
The game keeps your score in the top right corner. You score points for picking
up items and successfully beating opponents. The main screen shows the high
score.
Cheats:
```````
This game can be frustrating, so to make it a little easier here are two cheats
(called POKE on the ZX):
Infinite Lives - Address 36726, Value 0
Infinite Boars - Address 36662, Value 0
Remember that infinite boars mean infite time, and not losing lives means you
can lose fights and move on without the enemy re-spawning.
===============================================================================
03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300
===============================================================================
Gaulish Village:
````````````````
You start in the village. Ignore the boar in the top left corner and head east
twice to leave home.
Forest:
```````
Try to ignore the enemies for now and run north twice.
Camp Compendium:
````````````````
It is not so easy to avoid the soldiers here so you will have to fight them.
Walk east to find your first CAULDRON PIECE, return left and south twice, then
right into the next camp.
Camp Totorum:
`````````````
Move on north and do not bother with the camp.
Forest:
```````
Continue east three screens, pick up the key in the top right corner and move
south and west. Go north two screens into the next camp.
Camp Aquarium:
``````````````
Walk north three screens through the camp.
Forest:
```````
Go west into the next area, then south and finally west to find your next
CAULDRON PIECE. Walk south and fight the soldier. Simply stay still in the
corner to surrender and you will be taken prisoner.
Cell:
`````
Leave the cell and beat up the guard outside. Walk left and enter the first
cell you get to. Inside is the third CAULDRON PIECE. Wait around until the cell
door turns white and then leave to enter the Arena.
Arena:
``````
This is the perfect time to use your phial as each single hit will kill you
otherwise. You need to perform knockouts to the oncoming Romans but you cannot
move. The only way you can ever do that is to time your leg kicks, leg kicks
being performed by a Fire + Down move. After you defeat ten the onslaught
will not only have stopped but you also given a CAULDRON PIECE as reward. Leave
via the blue gate.
Roma:
`````
Walk south and west near the bottom edge of the screen in front of the red
door. Beat up the two guards if you have to and finally find the last CAULDRON
PIECE slightly hidden between the trees in the back. The game will
automatically end as soon as you pick it up.
CONGRATULATIONS
