I.  Introduction

This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for the Atari 8-bit computer game The Goonies.  It
contains instructions on how to play, walkthroughs for the game's eight stages,
and a mini-review.

*******************************************************************************
II.  Background Story

For those of you who haven't seen the movie, here is a little background:

The Goonies are a group of young teens whose parents are about to lose their
homes to a rich developer who wants to make a golf course.  While they are over
at Mikey's house to spend one last weekend together, they discover a treasure
map belonging to the infamous pirate One-Eyed Willy.  They decide to go looking
for the treasure in the hopes of saving their homes before the bank forecloses.

Upon arriving at the site on the map they discover an old abandoned restaurant.
This restaurant is being used as a hideout by the Fratellis, a family of
gangsters.  Now, not only do the Goonies have to deal with Willy's booby traps,
but the Fratellis are right on their heels.

*******************************************************************************
III.  Getting Started

On the title screen, press Option to toggle between a one player or two player
co-op game.  Press Start when you are ready to begin.

If you wait on the title screen for a while, the game will go into demo mode
and it will show you a preview of the first stage.  Eventually it will go
through demos for all eight stages.

*******************************************************************************
IV.  Basic Gameplay

There are eight stages in the game.  In each stage, the two Goonies must work
together to get past the obstacles and proceed to the next one.

You move your characters with the joysticks.  Press left or right to make them
move left or right.  Press up to jump.  You also press up to climb up and press
down to climb down.  In the one player game, press the button to switch
Goonies.  In the two player game, each player controls one Goonie each.

You get 5 lives in this game.  You lose a life when you are caught by one of
the Fratellis or one of the countless other obstacles in the game.  When you
lose a life the Goonies return to the start, but any "solutions" remain.

As best as I can tell, besides Sloth, there are no differences in the abilities
of the different Goonies. Sloth cannot be hurt by Ma Fratelli and since he is
tall, can reach high ladders.

V.  Walkthrough

Here are the solutions to the eight stages in The Goonies.  At the beginning of
each section I have also provided a little background information from the
movie to help you understand the setup of the stage.

It is possible to beat the game with only one player, but it is much easier with
two.  I refer to the Goonies by name when describing the solutions, but really
it doesn't matter which one you use to do what until Stage 8 when you must use
Sloth in certain places.

Note:  Most of the fun in this game comes from figuring out how to complete a
stage.  You should only look at the solutions if you are really stuck.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A.  Stage 1 - Restaurant

You start out in the restaurant.  The goal here is to make it through the grate
in the fireplace and to the entrance to One-Eyed Willy's tunnel.

Start off by sending Mikey to the right and up the ladder to the third floor.
Now go left and leap over the chair in front of the chimney.  Now push the
chair to the right until it is under the ladder.  Now jump on the chair and
head up the ladder.  Go right and stand in front of the printing press.  You
want to be as far to the left of it as possible but still have it printing the
counterfeit bills.  As the bills start floating out the window, Ma Fratelli
will run outside and start trying to catch them.

While Ma Fratelli is busy with the phony money, switch to the Chunk.  Send him
right and down the ladder.  Once on the ground floor run all the way to the
left.  Now jump up and to the right to knock down the water cooler.  The
water will put out the fire, allowing you to go down the grate.  Now move over
to the right and press down to go through the grate.  Then run all the way to
the right.

Now for the hardest part of Stage 1.  Switch back to the Mikey.  Now move as
quickly as possible and head for the grate.  The printing press will stop
printing money and Ma Fratelli will head back indoors.  It will be really
close, as soon as you are over the hole press down.  Now run all the way to
the right and get ready for Stage 2.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B.  Stage 2 - Chester Copperpot

You are now at the beginning of One-Eyed Willy's tunnel.  You have just found
the skeleton of Chester Copperpot, a famous treasure hunter, who decades ago
disappeared while searching for One-Eyed Willy's treasure.  While examining
his body, the Goonies accidentally set of the booby traps.

Your goal here is to reach the key so you can unlock the exit.

Send Mouth right past the boulders.  These are easy to get by, just press
up against one when it drops and run under it when it lifts.  Just make sure
you go all of the way past or it will drop on you.  Now wait for the bat to
go down before dropping onto the elevator.  When you get down, hop off, and
climb down the ladder.  Now go left and stand in front of the drill like thing
to raise the boulder.

Now switch to Brandon.  Make your way past the boulders and onto the
elevator as before.  Now when the elevator stops, go left.  Hop onto the log
and press right to go left.  Make your way past the boulder then stop.

Switch back to Mouth and run all the way to the left.  The boulder will now
drop, keeping the bat from reaching Brand.

Now switch back.  Make your way past the dropping blades and onto the ledge.
Make sure that when jumping you don't accidentally move the log to the right
and into a blade.  Once on the ledge, move onto the raised part on the left,
then jump back to the key.  This will open the exit.

Now make sure the bat isn't nearby and climb down the ladder and out the exit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C.  Stage 3 - Underneath Country Club

The Goonies have stumbled into the area housing the plumbing for the local
country club.  They start banging on the pipes to try to attract help, but
instead end up causing a plumbing disaster.

The goal here is to activate the two valves leading to the pipe blocking the
exit so the pressure will build up and it will explode, giving you a way
through.

There is a man in the shower above you.  The hot water will drop from the
pipes below the stall he is using at that moment.  Make sure you avoid these
throughout the stage.  Another concern is that one of the Fratellis has made
his way down.  He will be on the ladder to the far left and will shoot at you,
so work fast and do as much as you can before he arrives.

Send Mouth all the way to the right and up the ladder.  Have him stand under
the ladder on the left of that ledge.  Now switch to Mikey and have him go
right and up the ladder.  Have him stand next to the pipe with the valve,
steam should now be shooting to the right.

Switch back to Mouth under the ladder.  Go up the ladder and jump onto the
platform to his upper left.  Go up the ladder and jump onto the pipe hanging
over the gap.  Go across the gap and have him stand in front of the
pipe with the valve.

Now switch to Mikey.  Go up the ladder, then jump onto the platform on his
upper left.  Go down the ladder and stand next to the pipe with the
valve on the right.  This will cause the pipe blocking the exit to explode.

Now send Mikey back up the ladder, up the second ladder and shimmy across
the pipe.  Go down the ladder and to the exit.  Now switch to Mouth
and go down the ladder to the exit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D.  Stage 4 - Rolling Stones

Your goal here is to redirect the rolling rocks so that they will hit and
remove the three barriers blocking the exit.  The rolling rocks don't hurt you
but the bats do.

Start off by having Data go left, down the ladder, right, down the ladder and
wait.  When the rock reaches the bottom right a bell will sound, causing bats
to appear, make sure you avoid them.  When he is clear of the bats, go down the
ladder and to the left to change the direction of the target.

Now switch to Andrea.  Have her go left and jump up onto the rope.
This will cause the trap door to open.  When the rock goes down it, very
quickly jump down, go down the ladder and jump onto the second rope.  This
will cause a barrier to stop the rock on the right.  Wait for the rock to
hit the barrier, then jump off.  Wait for the rock to go left over the trap
door and hit the wall on the right, the jump back on.  When the rock goes
through the trap door, quickly hop off and go down the ladder and jump on the
last rope.  The rock should hit the target and remove the barrier.  Now have
Andy go back to the to level start and do this two more times.  After the third
barrier is gone, have her go left and down the ladder to the exit.  Then
switch to Data and have him go up the ladder then down the ladder to the exit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E.  Stage 5 - Skull Rock

Your goal here is to build a ladder out of skulls at the lower right of the
screen so you can reach the exit.  There are lots of flying things around that
can harm you.  This is, in my opinion, the most difficult stage, it may cost
you a few lives to stack up enough skulls.  This stage is definitely easier
with two players.

Note:  When I say left eye of the skull, I mean the eye on the left of the
screen, I know it is actually his right eye, but I am trying to keep the
confusion to a minimum.

There isn't really any one solution here.  The rope on the left will open the
trap door over the lava on the bottom right.  The rope on the right will close
the trap door over the lava on the right.  To reach the ropes, stand on the
trampoline directly underneath of it until you bounce high enough and grab
the rope.  The left eye of the skull leads to the lower left.  The nose leads
to the upper right.  On the other side of the rope is the passageway to the
right eye.  From here you can go down the ladder and reach the exit.

The idea here is to have one Goonie pull on the rope on the right, while one
pushes the skulls across the trapdoor and against the ledge on the bottom
right.  If a skull isn't stacked within a certain amount of time, it will turn
into a winged creature that will come hunting for you.  I strongly advise you
to dump any skulls on the left side of the screen into the left lava pit.

Send Stefanie to the top right rope and one to the bottom of ladder below
the right eye of the skull.  The bird will drop the skulls in random locations.
Just avoid him and wait for him to drop his skull at the lower right of the
screen.  Have her pull the rope while Mikey pushes the skull across.  Then have
Mikey go back to the left side of the trap door and up the ladder.  Have Stef
jump of the rope.  Use her to dispose of any skulls that land on the left side
of the screen.  If a skull is dropped at the upper right, just push it all the
way to the right and it will pop out at the lower right.  When you have stacked
five skulls have Mikey hide to the right of the skulls and switch to Stef.
Have her go down the ladder and jump the lava pit and climb up to the exit.
Then switch to Mikey and climb up.  Be sure to keep tabs on the
bird at all times.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F.  Stage 6 - Organ of Bones

On the back of the map that the Goonies found are some musical notes that must
be played on the organ made from human bones.  Of course they mess up and the
cave starts to collapse on them.

The first thing you need to do is to get both Goonies to the ladder in the
middle of the screen.  You do this by waiting for the rocks to hit the red key
on the organ, then dropping down.

Next send Stef up the ladder and have her jump up and onto the rope to open the
door.  Then send Brand through the door.  When the red trap door drops go down.

Now here comes the tricky part.  You must switch to Stef and have
her stand on the white key.  Then switch back to Brand and have him jump down
to the bottom left ledge then jump across onto the white trap door, then jump
up and hang on the rope.  Now switch back to Stef and quickly move her down the
ladder.  You have to time this just right so that you avoid the falling rocks.

Now comes the REALLY tricky part.  You must get Stef to where Brand is, but now
you have to wait for a rock to hit the white key and move very quickly across.
Wait until you see a rock in the air above the white key before you jump.  Once
you are across, switch and hop off the rope.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G.  Stage 7 - Giant Octopus

Here the goal is to lower the water level so you can get by the giant octopus.
The real trick to this stage is avoiding the two bats, if you can do that you
should be able to beat this one easily.

The first thing you need to do is to quickly get both Goonies on the ladder so
the current doesn't carry them into the sword.

Next send Data up the ladder and have him jump onto the bars above and to
the right of him.  Climb over and press diagonal up and to the right to reach
the ladder.  Climb up the ladder and jump onto the overhead bars.  Head left
and jump onto the blue trampoline on the right.  Hold up until you are able to
reach the rope.  This will drop the box into the flowing water.

Now switch to Andy and have her push the box to the left.  Jump onto the box
and grab onto the rope.  Now drop off and get on the ladder.  Go up and to the
right and jump over the Octopus.  Now switch Goonies, use the trampoline to get
on the ledge to the right.  Now jump over the octopus.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H.  Stage 8 - Pirate Ship

Note: In this stage you must use Sloth for completing several tasks, Chunk will
not be able to perform them.

The Goonies have finally found One-Eyed Willy's pirate ship.  Unfortunately for
you, so have the Fratellis.

The goal here is to get rid of Ma Fratelli and then get Chunk and Sloth to
the top right of the ship.

Start off by sending Chunk up the ladder, then down the next ladder, then
down again and hit the lever.  This opens up the trap door.  Now switch to
Sloth and have him go up the ladder, down the trap door and up the ladder and
have him pull on the rope to open another trap door.

Now switch back to Chunk.  Have him go up the two ladders and down the trap
door that just opened.  Go down the ladder and jump up and pull on the rope to
open yet another trap door.  Now switch back to Sloth.  Go down the two ladders
and through this new opening.  Jump onto the rope.  Switch to Chunk and bring
him down to the bottom of the boat.  Switch back to Sloth.

Now switch to Chunk and have him jump on the rope.  Switch back to Sloth and
have him go all the way back to the ladder above the room where Chunk first
pulled the lever.

Switch back to Chunk and have him hop off the rope.  Go up the two ladders.
You are too short to reach the last one, so head left through what looks like
a wall and jump onto the rolled up sail on the mast.

Now Switch back to Sloth.  You have to climb down and drop to the right to
reach the lever to raise the sail.  This is the trickiest part of the stage,
if you fall down, you have to bring Chunk back to the rope and try again.
After the sail is raised, jump over to the right next to the treasure chest.
Now finally switch to Sloth and drop down and go up the three ladders to
Chunk and the treasure.  Now sit back and watch the very short ending.

Now you get to do it all over again.  You will start back at Stage 1 with the
score and number of lives remaining carrying over.

VI.   Game Review

This is a neat title for the Atari 8-bit computer.  I think the Goonies
license both helps and hurts this game.  It will attract fans of the movie,
while at the same time it will inevitably draw comparisons with the two NES
titles.  This game came out a year before The Goonies and two years before The
Goonies 2 for the NES, so they have both the advantage of time and more
powerful hardware.

If you consider this game on its own, it is pretty good.  It has better than
average graphics for games on this platform.  The sound and music are also
good.  The main drawbacks are the poor play control and high challenge factor.

Fans of the movie should definitely give it a try, but others may be turned off
by the excessive challenge.

Pros

-  Fans of the movie will have no trouble recognizing the game's locations and
  characters.
-  The overall idea of the Goonies having to work together as a team to advance
is good and it is executed well.
-  The two player co-op mode is an excellent feature.
-  Some of the best quality music I have heard on an Atari 8-bit computer.
-  Unlike the NES titles, you get to play as all of the Goonies.

Cons

-  Poor play control.
-  This game is VERY challenging and often feels outright unfair.
-  You don't get to use any of Data's toys.
-  Falls a little short of the standard set by the two NES Goonies games,
  especially in the graphics department.
