1. REVISION HISTORY
01/12/06: Decided to write a guide for this simple, but fun, game.

2. HOW TO PLAY THE GAME
BRIEFING:
The enemy forces are mobilizing rapidly. They have launched an all-out
offensive with their air force, and have littered the grounds with their anti-
aircraft (AA) guns and their ammunition depots.
Unfortunately, our squadron has been greatly reduced by the enemy attacks, so
we only have a few planes of our own. They are equipped with unlimited
ammunition, though, so you don't have to worry about having to land to reload,
and you've also got plenty of fuel.
The only thing you need to worry about is shooting the enemy jets and their
AA guns before they shoot you down. Good luck and good hunting!
SETTING UP:
Set up your Atari 2600 or Atari 7800 and plug a joystick into the left
controller jack. Spitfire Attack is for one player only. Power up and select
your skill level (see below for more info) with the Game Select switch.
Use the left difficulty switch to determine how skilled your enemies are. In
the 'A' position (left position) they move very fast and are hard to shoot
down. In the 'B' position (right position) they move at a slower speed and are
easier to shoot down. The difficulty level can be changed at any time,
including during gameplay.
There are six skill levels, with the first one being the easiest with your
plane moving at a slow speed. The skill levels get more challenging with your
plane moving at a slightly higher speed with each difficulty, untill you reach
level 6, at which point your plane will move at a very fast rate of speed.
Your plane's speed cannot be adjusted at all in the game.
The TV Type Switch isn't used in this game.
When you are satisfied with your selection, press the Game Reset button to
begin your mission.
HOW TO PLAY:
Hold the joystick with the button to the upper left at all times. The plane is
controlled like a real plane, in that pushing up on the joystick will cause you
to descend, while pulling down will cause you to ascend. Left and right will
cause your plane to bank in those directions. Be warned, if you dive for too
long, your status bar (where your score and number of planes remaining are
displayed) will start to flash red. You must pull out, or you will crash.
Your gunsight is shown in the center of the screen as a diamond shape. To
fire your machine guns, press the button. You can only fire in short bursts
with each press, but you have unlimited ammunition, so you can fire as often as
you need to.
The primary goal of this game is to shoot at the enemy targets, which are enemy
planes, ammunition dumps (black houses on the ground) and AA guns (L shapes
with the vertical part slanted to the right a little.) Your overall goal is to
achieve the highest score possible. (There is no ending to this game.)
Enemy planes are the most common enemy in the game, and are attempting to shoot
you down. They can't do this untill they are close enough for their shots to
hit, at which point their propellors should be visible. You should try to
shoot them down as quickly as possible. If you can't, dive or bank before they
start to ascend, otherwise you will be shot down. (If this happens, your
screen will flash with the colors of an explosion.)
AA Guns are generally harmless, but occasionally you may see black 'spots'
flickering at random spots around your screen. This means that the enemy is
using their AA Guns to shoot at you. You must quickly shoot the nearest gun to
get the spots to disappear, otherwise you will be shot down.
Ammunition dumps are just extra targets that you can shoot for points. They
won't harm you.

3. SCORING INFORMATION
Points are awarded for shooting the following targets:
ENEMY PLANE: 500 Points
AA GUN: 100 Points
AMMO DUMP: 100 Points
You start each game with six planes in your squadron. Every time you are shot
down by an enemy plane or an AA gun, you lose one plane. When all six planes
are shot down, the game is over. You can't earn extra lives in this game.

4. TIPS
While most of the game is pretty much 'shoot them before they shoot you,' there
are some tactics that will help you become a better pilot:
-Enemy planes need to rise a certain distance on screen before they can shoot
you down. If you think one is too close, dive downward so they can't reach
that distance. You can also turn to one side, since enemies who are offscreen
can't shoot you.
-Don't waste time trying to shoot the ground targets, as they're generally
harmless and aren't worth as many points as the enemy planes are. The only
exception is if an AA Gun is trying to shoot you down.
-Your ammunition supply is unlimited, so you can shoot as much as you want
without worrying about running out of ammo.
-And, while I'm sure you're tired of me saying this, I still have to say it,
since it's the most important tip of all, HAVE FUN!
