I have removed my e-mail info, because I don't have time to answer
questions about video games anymore. This is pretty much a complete FAQ
anyway. If it's not here, it's probably not vital.

0A. -----VERSION 2.01 UPDATES: 3-2-08 -----

I have only updated my contributor name and removed my e-mail
info. The rest of the FAQ remains the same.

0B. -----VERSION 2.0 UPDATES: 10-21-03 -----

It's been nearly 2 years since I have made any changes to this
walkthrough. The following has changed since then:

CHANGE OF NAME -- Since joining the Gamefaqs message
boards, I've been going by the name of Crazylaz. While
updating my FAQs (all of which have been LONG overdue) I
have decided to remove the Pelivor name and make it my
message board name. This is to prevent confusion to those
who have sent me e-mails. My e-mail address remains the
same at [email protected].

ADDITION TO THE PASSWORD SYSTEM -- Someone by the name of
Ant ([email protected]) sent me an excellent explanation to the
Secret Quest password system a while back, but I never
had the time to make the addition. I have included the
e-mail to this FAQ as it was typed.

MINOR ERROR CORRECTIONS -- All through the FAQ, I have fixed
minor errors and removed some of the excess clutter and filler.

Thus, concludes the Version 2.0 Updates section.

1.   ------The Story------

Well, there are alien space stations...eight of them. Aliens are
gonna destroy the human race (seems like a common theme for a lot
of these Atari 2600 games). Your job is to blow them up.

2.   ------Starting/Controls------

Unlike some of the old Atari 2600 games, this one is pretty advanced
for it's time, though not nearly as advanced as Solaris. When you start
your game, it will ask you for two initials. Input them, then start your
game by pressing the fire button on your joystick. NOTE: I HIGHLY
RECOMMEND using a Sega Genesis controller over an Atari joystick (B is
the default fire button). It's easier to use a directional pad over a
stick, especially for this game.

During the game, the directional pad moves the character, and the fire
button uses your weapon. There is a score at the bottom of the screen,
and two bars. The first is your energy bar (which depletes as you use
your weapons), and the other is your oxygen bar (your life force. If
this drops below empty, the game is over)

If you toggle the black/white switch on your Atari 2600, you get a
status screen, which tells you which floor you are located on the
current station. (The color that's flashing). To the right is your
current equipped item/weapon. To change it, press the fire button
(of course, nothing happens right now because you don't have a weapon).
At the bottom, there are 12 symbols. This is your password. You can
write it down and continue your game later (which I'll explain later).
There are 8 stations at the top of the screen. Those are the remaining
alien stations left to destroy. The flashing one is the station you are
on.

3. ------The Walkthrough------

Station 1
Difficulty: (on a 1 to 10 scale, 10 being hardest) 1

           Level 1
_____________________________
|      |      |      |      |

|______|______|______|______|

Each 3x6 characters will represent one room. There will be a legend on
where items, stairs, and monsters are located, as well as a shortened
walkthrough on directions to getting all the items in one piece (in case
these primative maps get too confusing).

Because this level is so ridiculously easy (I beat it when I was only
5 years old), I will use level 1 as a was to get you used to the game.

Legend:   1. Energy Sword (your first weapon).
       New Monsters:
         E1: Bear Trap (50 Pts)
         O1: Potato Man (100 Pts)

         Time to Self-Destruct: 20 Secs

Coding for monsters:

E/O: Letter indicates rather if you lose energy or oxygen if the monster
    touches you.
Number: Power of the enemy. A damage list is provided at the end of the
       walkthrough.
Monsters always give either oxygen of energy when defeated. For the first
few levels, monsters ALWAYS give the item that they take away.
Any ALL CAPS typed are the most important things you need to do in each
level. Some include hints and tips that I highly recommend.

You ALWAYS start in the upper left corner of the first level in each
station.

Move one room to the right and take the sword. Swing it a few times by
pressing the fire button to get used to it. Move one room to the right
to fight your first foe.

Monster Strategy: As far as I know, based on several plays, the pattern
for monster movement appeared to be random. Here are the problems you'll
encounter:

1. The monster appears randomly in the room each time you enter it
  (advantage: monsters).
2. NEVER chase! They're patterns are random, so at any minute they could
turn around and damage you. (advantage: monsters)
3. If you chase them anyway, DON'T chase them diagonally! Though you can
move diagonally, you can't use your weapon diagonally. (advantage:
  monsters)
4. Wait until the monster comes to you, then use your weapon to kill it.
The problem: If the monsters don't come to you, time goes by, and you
  lose oxygen. (advantage: monsters)
5. Even if you kill the monster, sometimes another monster will appear
afterward, up to a max of four monsters! (This is not determined at
random, but it'd take too much time to list how many monsters are in
  each room).

That given, here's my strategy:
 - Use a combo of waiting/chasing strategy, only attempting to attack
   when they're within range.
 - When a monster appears, two blurs phase onto the screen. This gives
you a split-second chance to set up where they're gonna appear and
   get a quick hit in.

That's all you really need to know. Most importantly, WATCH YOUR ENERGY
AND OXYGEN LEVELS!!! If your energy drops to 0, you can't use your
weapon. If you can't use your weapon, you can't search for oxygen. When
your oxygen reaches 0, the game is over.

That said, let's finish this level:

Go to the right, all the way down, then all the way to the left (make
sure you practice killing monsters), the two rooms up. There is a
symbol in this room. Every station has one symbol on each of the
station's floors. They are part of the self-destruct sequence code (and
is always different each time the game is played). Now go two rooms down,
one room right, and two rooms up. The purpleish thing in the middle is
the exit. This is where you go when the self-destruct is initiated. Now
go two rooms down, one room right, then two rooms up. Notice you can't
enter the room...This is the computer of the station, where you input the
self-destruct code. That said, move forward to change the symbol until it
matches the one you saw in the other room, and press the fire button. The
self-destruct is now counting down. All the monsters have cleared the
station, leaving you the only one left. Get to the teleporter you found
before the station blows up! (well, it doesn't blow up, the atari is too
primative for those type of special effects...you just die). When you
exit, the status screen shows one of the eight stations crumbling to
dust, and then you appear on the next station.

Now you know the basic routine to beating each station. The following
station walkthroughs will be brief, giving you directions to beating
each level:

Station 2
Difficulty: 3
Crazylaz's Notes: Really just more practice. The only hard part is
remembering two symbols rather than one.

    New Monsters:
       E2: Chopper (150 Pts)
       O2: Machine (200 Pts)

BB: Energy Barrier (random lightning bolts drain your energy).
C: Extra...no clue what it does. As far as I know, it merely
          increases your score.
$$: Hidden one-way staircase. Use Sonic Horn to reveal it.
*: Killing monsters gets you quadruple your energy or oxygen
          supply.
       Time to self-destruct: 20 secs

Directions
1F: Two right, get horn, two left, one down, one right, one down,
one right, one down, one right, three up, GET CODE, one down,

three up, INPUT CODE (move left or right to change to other symbol.
1st level code is first code, 2nd level code is second code, etc.).
   Self-destruct begins.

To Escape: Three down, two left, three up, one right.

Station 3
Difficulty: 5 out of 10
Crazylaz's Notes: Now newer monsters take two hits to kill. But a new
                 weapon is closeby.

Station 4
Difficulty: 8
Crazylaz's Notes: What a pain. My maps probably won't help, because
most staircases are one-way only! You'll be going around a lot of
circles. I haven't completely finished the level 4 map, but may not
anyway because of how much of a pain this level was to begin with. This
is the first level in which the monster will leave behind the opposite
of what they drain from you. (ex. Oxygen depleting monster leaves energy
instead). I'd AVOID these encounters whenever possible.

Station 5
Difficulty: 6
Crazylaz's Notes: This is probably the last breather-level. It's for the
most part very straight-forward, and will probably be the last time
things go smoothly. The third and final weapon is found here, so plan to
make a side-trip. Notice that your Sonic Blaster freezes a monster if
it doesn't entirely kill it? THIS WILL BE CRITICALLY ESSENTIAL in the
later levels!

On another note: Monsters have become pretty strong from this point on.
Some of these maybe inaccurate in terms of rather they give energy or
oxygen when destroyed.

Crazylaz's Notes: Freaking hard in my opinion. Make sure you have all
the codes, because if you find the computer before you find the codes,
well, you'll probably discover you're trapped on the 6th floor.

Station 7
Difficulty: 9
Crazylaz's Notes: You'll meet a new monster here (looks like a snake),
notice that you can't seem to kill him. This is where the Sonic Blaster
is needed. Freeze him with the Sonic Blaster, than finish him off with a
weapon. Seems like it takes too much energy though. I recommend avoiding
Snakes unless your forced to fight one (there will be a few occassions).

Station 8
Difficulty: 10
Pelivor's Notes: It's straightforward, but also confusing at the same
time. EXPLORE CAREFULLY! If you miss one code, you probably won't be able
to get it again.

FINALLY! A monster with a predictable pattern! It is the dragon! He sits
at the bottom of the screen shooting fireballs. (hope you have the sonic
blaster). Right now, he's invincible, but if you use the Sonic Blaster
to freeze him, you can kill him with any weapon. One problem: HE DOESN'T
DROP ANYTHING! WAH! So to continue at certain points, you WILL have to
waste some energy.

The energy barriers are probably now shooting so much lightning that
you can't get by them without taking damage. So just run right through
and don't worry about your energy level.

Notice that some of the rooms are empty? Well, that's basically the
escape path back to the exit. So by following my directions, you don't
find out what was in those rooms. (at least I didn't)

left, take stairs, one up, take stairs, one up, two right,

4.   The Ending

The eighth and final alien station explodes in a magnificent explosion,
and you (the hero) fly your way back to Earth. You are expecting a
wonderful parade in your honor, millions of dollars for saving the human
race once and for all, and of course, the key to the world. Well, you
arrive on Earth and there is no parade. Nobody gave a flying goat's
behind on what you did to save the world, for the streets are barren
and empty. And this dream of a perfect ending all becomes nothing when
a cheesy 2 second tune indicates you beat the game, followed by the
big GAME OVER line with your listed high score. (What? Did you really
think that an Atari 2600 game could have such an elaborate ending as
the one I made up? No, of course not).

I finished the game with 178,080 points. Probably would've been higher
if I didn't spare the lives of so many snakes.

5.   ------More about Secret Quest------

Items List

Oxygen Bottle: When touched, it increases your oxygen bar by one unit.
Energy Pod: When touched, it increases your energy bar by one unit.
Sonic Key: There are yellow versions of the teleporters found in several
levels. Use the sonic key in these rooms to reveal a hidden
          staircase.
Extra: I don't think this does anything except increase your score. If
anybody knows if this does anything else please e-mail me.

Weapons List

Energy Sword     Strength Value: 2         Energy Used: 1
Description: It looks like a yellow rectangle when used.

Sonic Blaster    Strength Value: 4         Energy Used: 2

a monster if it doesn't kill it.

Particle Beam    Strength Value: 8         Energy Used: 4
Description: Looks like the energy sword, except it shoots across the
screen at a fast speed. Frequent use will deplete energy quickly.

6.   ------The Password System------

There are two initials and 12 symbols that make up the password system.
Each symbol can be one of 16 other symbols, all of which are primatively
drawn here with cheesy graphics.
`                                           _____
`   \     \         /    \         / \      | . |
`    \     \       /      \       <   >     |___|    _______   \______/

` \/    \/     |       \_____/    \__||__/   \/___\/       |     \_____/

The two initials you input at the beginning of the game also reflect
part of the password. If you input a password you wrote down with the
wrong initials, the code will not work.

To input a password, start a new game, toggle the black/white switch to
bring up the status screen, and press the game select switch. Right and
left moves to the next symbol, up and down changes the symbol. When your
done changing the symbols, hit game select again. Correct entry changes
the status screen to where you ended your previous game.

START AT LEVEL 8

Start the game with the initials   J B, and input the following:

`                                             _____
`\______/    \      \______/     \           /     \      \

I'm not sure if the same passwords work for different cartridges. If it
does or doesn't work please e-mail me.

6b.     ------PASSWORD UPDATE------

As mentioned in the update section, somebody e-mailed me shortly after
this FAQ was sent to Gamefaqs. He/she/it went by the name of Ant
([email protected]). This person sent me some excellent information on how
the password system works. I have pasted the e-mail here in it's
original form.

NOTE: The link listed in the e-mail no longer works, and Ant has not
replied to my e-mails. If you are that person, and you would like
to make a change or addition to the info you have already sent me,
e-mail me at [email protected].

------Ant's E-Mail, sent on 12/16/01------

I just happened to run across your Secret Quest (Atari) FAQ and thought
you might be interested in how to make up a password with whatever you
choose.

If you are interested in adding this information to the FAQ, be sure to
try it out yourself and tell me if you have any problems, so that I might
clarify. I attempted to present the information in a more practical way
than the abstract way it is in my mind :-)

>>No changes necessary. They seem to work fine.

I also made an image that shows the values of the symbols, and the
correspondence for the player's initials. It may help you understand the
password better. http://www.io.com/~ant/secret_quest_pw.gif

BTW, I think the game is great when compared to other games on that
system. It was fast-paced, had enemies, levels to map, weapons, and
a password.

Enjoy, and thanks for your FAQ causing me to dig the Atari out and
hook it up again.

To make a password
------------------

Input your initials. It doesn't matter what they are. Bring up the
status screen by switching TV Type on the console. Enable password entry
by pressing the Game Select switch on the console.

The password consists of 2 lines of 6 symbols each. To change a symbol,
press up or down. To go to an adjacent symbol, press left or right. The
symbols will be described in the natural order (first line, left-to-right,
the second line, left-to-right).

While changing symbols, keep a running total of the number of times you
advance it by pressing up (if you adjust a symbol back down, subtract one
from your total). This will be used for the last symbol of the password.

(the symbols of the password)
A B C D E F
G H I J K L

A weapons: To have the sword, press up once. To have a sword and the
first gun, press up 3 times. To have a sword and both guns, press up 5
times.

B hundred-thousands place of score

C station. Press up to advance what station you are on. For example,
pressing up 3 times will start you at station 4.

D ten-thousands place of score

E oxygen. Press up to increase your oxygen. You start out with 6 units.
Maximum is 15 units (if you try to give more, it'll just wrap around
through 0).

F thousands place of score

G first initial (for letters past O, the system adds 8 up presses to
password position A)

H hundreds place of score

I second initial (for letters past O, the system adds 8 up presses to
password position C)

J tens place of score

K energy. See note for oxygen above.

L checksum. This is used to check that the password was entered
correctly. Password symbols have an internal value from 0 to 15. To
determine the checksum, they are totaled, then divided by 16. The symbol
corresponding to the remainder of the division, which will be in range 0
to 15, is put here. You don't need to calculate this yourself; you just</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
need to keep it correct, since it starts out correct. When you press up
to change another symbol of the password, you'll need to press up on this
checksum symbol the same number of times. Take the total number of up
presses you used to change any other symbols in the password, if it's
greater than 15, divide by 16 and take the remainder, then press up on
this symbol that number of times.

Examples
--------

I want to start out at station 3 with all three weapons.

Procedure: Press up 7 times on the first symbol of the password. Press
up 2 times on third symbol of the password. Press up 9 times on the
last symbol of the password.

I want to start out at station 8 with all three weapons, and full
oxygen and energy.

Procedure: Press up 7 times on the first symbol of the password. Press
up 7 times on third symbol of the password. Press up 9 times on the
fifth symbol of the password. Press up 9 times on the fifth symbol of
the second line of the password. There's no need to adjust the last
symbol of the password, as the total of up presses (7 + 7 + 9 + 9 = 32),
divided by 16, has no remainder.

I want to start out at station 1 with 987,000 points.

Procedure: Press up 9 times on the second symbol of the password. Press
up 8 times on the second symbol of the password. Press up 7 times on the
fourth symbol of the password. Press up 8 times on the last symbol of
the password (9 + 8 + 7 = 24; 24 / 16 = 1 w/ remainder 8).

------End of E-Mail------

Thank you again, Ant, for the excellent information on the Password
system. If you have an e-mail change, or would like to make additions
to your explanations, feel free to contact me.
