| Section 1.00 ABOUT THIS FAQ search.about |
·=============================================================================·
I was looking through a bunch of my older games and was wondering to myself
why I didn't write any FAQs for these classics. So I decided to write a
guide for one of my favorites. Then I noticed that Atari 2600 was missing
guides to many many games, so I have made it my duty to get as many good
FAQs out there as I can for this classic, yet overlooked system.
This FAQ is copyright information of its author, Mike Truitt. Any attempt

This is my first attempt at using the search function implemented in one of
my FAQs. You will notice that my each major section and subsection there
will be the term search followed by ".xxx". This can be used to help
navigate the FAQ easier. If you would like to skip ahead to one section,
then simply use the Find function of the computer (Ctrl + F) and type the
command listed. You should skip strait to where you would like to go.

This is the first version of the FAQ. In just about all cases it will
also be the last version. I have explored the game as thouroughly as I
think is necessary to write a complete walkthrough, and due to the
nature of the system, there generally are no hidden extras to be missed.

| Section 3.00 GAME BASICS seach.basics |
·=============================================================================·
You will not have to sit there and take everything. Your gas hog has been
given the ability to jump over enemy tanks and the pot holes, and you will
also be equipped with a surface to air missle that can take down the enemy
airforce with incredible precision.
There will also be bonus point icons that will appear on the screen from
time to time to help you out. For these allies, you must not shoot! Simply
run into them to get your points. If you shoot them, you will loose points.
Alas, your gas hog is named so for a reason. Fairly often, you will need to
fall down to the bottom of the two levels on the screen and pick up a gas
tank while you are refueling. The problem with this: when you are in the
inner earth you will have to travel backwards towards the beginning of the
level, so be extra careful to only go down there when needed and to get
your 6 back out of there as soon as possible.

·-------------------· ·--------------· the enemies are dead.
There are two main strategies that I have found that work well and allow
you to get through the levels easier than simple impvisation and luck. Due
to the fact that Gas Hog is a fairly basic game, you will be able to use
both the strategies at the same time, or at least in the same game. Once
you are able to understand and use the strategies well, there is no telling
how far you will get in this game.
·-------------·
| Strategy 01 |
·-------------·
They say that the best offense is a good defense. A defensive player will
move about the screen at his own pace. Do not worry so much about killing
your enemies, but rather simple try to get by them. This concept might not
seem like a great one at first, but when you have multiple enemies on the
screen simultaniously, then you may not be able to constantly attack at all
times. React only to the attacks that you know will hit you.
Another part of the defensive strategy is how often you get fuel. If you
are a defensive player, get fuel every time that you can. The game will not
let you run out of fuel, so if it is there, take it.
The largest down side to this strategy is the fact that you will have a
very small score come the end of the game. If you are one of those players
who likes to see high scores and compete against other players, this
strategy is not for you.
·-------------·
| Strategy 02 |
·-------------·
As opposed to the previous strategy, this concept is to attack everything
in sight. If you kill all your enemies before they can attack you, there
will never be any need for defense. This strategy takes more skill and
better hand eye coordination, but it will pay off for you in the end. You
will see huge scores with this strategy.
When it comes to fueling an offensive player will only fuel when it is
absolutely neccessary. This means you will have to know how long you can
last with out running out. If you are able to figure this out, and have the
luck to time it well, then you will be able to score much more than the
average player.
The down side to the solely offensive strategy is if you do not kill an
enemy immediatly, and your defensive skills lack, it will not take long for
you to be wiped off the map. It also happens quite often that you will run
yourself out of fuel and know it, but the game simply does not give you the
icon. Also when I was using this method, I would sometimes shoot out the
bonus point icons that would come my way, which has an adverse effect on my
score, so be aware of that.
·-------------------------------· Here it is, not much of a table is here
| OBJECT | SCORE | or really needed for that matter. Like-
|-------------------+-----------| wise, the only real strategy I can give
| Enemy Aircraft | 30 Points | out is if it comes down to killing an
| Enemy Ship 1 | 50 Points | enemy aircraft of the enemy's ship then
| Enemy Ship 2 | 50 Points | kill the ship for the few extra points.
|-------------------+-----------| You should also do whatever you can to
| Bonus Point Icon | Various | avoid getting killed. If you die, it
| Bonus Icon Shot | Negative | is certainly harder to score than alive
·-------------------------------· in any game. Sorry I can't help more.

| Section 6.00 NOTES AND THANKS search.thank |
·=============================================================================·
First off let me just say that a great deal of gratitude is expressed
towards all webmasters on the Internet that spend their priceless time and
hard earned money for the sole purpose of allowing people from all
different walks of life, come together and discuss and help each other with
video games. Without that time and that money, the video game industry
would be nowhere near what it is today. Thank You All.
Secondly, I must thank shoecream and his infinite wisdom. It is because of
him that this entire document is justified (except for a few lines).
