==============================/ Chapter 1: INTRO /=============================
---------------> 1.1) What's Dragonfire?
Dragonfire is an action game developed by Bob Smith / Imagic for Atari 2600. It
was launched in 1982, and later ported to the Intellivision, VIC-20, Commodore
64, Apple II, ZX Spectrum, ColecoVision, and Tandy Color Computer.
In Dragonfire, you play a prince which recovers treasure from rooms guarded by
dragons, while avoiding fire balls. The game is fast paced, but doesn't becomes
impossible, like several Atari games of its age. This allows you to really get
good on it, and to go for high scores.

---------------> 1.3) Version history
- 1.0 released February 27th 2017. First version, already a mostly complete
guide.
---------------> 1.4) Storyline
According to the manual, this is the story behind this game:
Dragons have driven the Royal Court from the Castle.
"O we are lost, lost" laments the King. "Without our vast treasures we cannot
raise an army 'gainst these accursed dragons. Our Kingdom must now languish
under lizards!"
"Nay, not so, my liege!" replied the young Prince. "None knows that Castle,
those many bridges and storerooms, better than I. Give me leave and I shall
loot those lizards of their plunder and restore my lord to his birthright."
"Brave boy," said the King, fully pleased. "But," he added darkly, "beware
dread dragonfire!"
============================/ Chapter 2: GAMEPLAY /============================
---------------> 2.1) Basics
Each stage includes two areas: a bridge you need to cross to reach a storeroom,
and the storeroom itself, where you will really collect treasure. When the game
starts, your friendly little prince is the guy in green pants and red shirt you
will see right of a bridge. Yeah, I agree it's a bit strange, but in this game,
unlike most action games, you will move left most time.
To move the prince, use your directional lever. The single button avaliable in
Atari 2600 games is used to jump, but just while crossing bridges.
Avoid all fire balls, otherwise you will lose a life every time you are hit.
When you lose all your lives, the game is over.
---------------> 2.2) Bridges
Bridges are the first area in each game stage. In a bridge area, note there are
two towers connected by the bridge. You start at the right side, and need to
reach the left side. If you enter the tower to your right, you can stay there
and are invulnerable to fire balls while hiding there. You can also think about
it as pausing the game.
Soon, fireballs will come from left tower. There are two types of fire balls:
- high: aimed at your chest. To avoid these, you need to crouch. To crouch, put
the directional lever down.
- low: aimed at your legs. To avoid these, you need to jump. To jump, use your
controller button.
Keep in mind that high fire balls are faster, like twice the speed of low fire
balls, and also much faster than the prince. Low fire balls, at other hand,
have same speed of the prince.
Once you reach the left tower, you go to the second stage area: the storeroom.
NOTE: while in the bridge, putting the directional lever up has no effect.
---------------> 2.3) Storerooms
You start the storeroom area in a shelter, at the lower right corner, however,
it's common to leave it at the moment you make it to the storeroom. This is
because, to leave your shelter, you just put the directional lever to left. As
you will have the lever to left already while crossing the brigde, you will
leave it most times. Don't worry, however: it stays open while you are in the
storeroom, and you can return any time you wish. In fact, you can also think
about this shelter as another "pause" command.
There is a well drawn dragon (of course, for Atari, but much better than the
duck-like dragons of Adventure) in the bottom of the screen. When you leave
your shelter, it will try to follow you, while spitting fire balls to the top
of the screen. Don't be hit!
The storeroom also has eight pieces of treasure, valuable objects you need to
collect before leaving. Once you collect all items, an exit will appear in the
upper left corner. Get to it, and you will end the stage, moving to the bridge
before the next storeroom.
NOTE: while in the storeroom, the jump button has no use. Just use the lever to
move the prince, avoiding fire balls and collecting treasure.
---------------> 2.4) Pro tips
Well, you know, you start this game with seven lives (remaining lives are the
little men under your score). This seems a lot, but unlike most Atari games,
here there is NO WAY to get more lives. Seven, and that's all you will have.
To master the game, you need to learn how to avoid getting the little prince
killed, being limited just by human error. I have learned it, I have scored
more than 100.000 points in a single life. I will tell you how to do it, but,
of course, I will also add to this guide different strategies you may discover.
E-mail me if you do.
-------> Bridge area
About bridges, know it: you will never cross it without crouching and jumping
at least once. The minimum fire balls you will avoid are one of each type. How
to do it? I recommend advancing up to the middle of the bridge. Then:
- if both fire balls come at same type, crouch, so the high fire ball will
miss, then start running to left and jump over the low fire ball while moving.
Easy!
- if the high fire ball comes first, it's almost like the previous situation,
but consider how much time you spent waiting for the low fire ball. Why? There
will never be more than one of fire ball of the same type over the bridge. But
when a fire ball reach the opposing side, there is a short safe time, like 2
seconds, and then the dragon can fire another one of that type. The high fire
ball is already faster. If you spend some time waiting for the low one, the
high can reach the right side, the safe time can be over, and another high can
be fired just in your face, when you are one meter of the tower. So, if you
needed to wait the low fire ball for a little, crouch and let the next high
fire ball pass over you.
- if the low fire ball comes first, start running back to right! As the high is
faster, it can pass over the low just at the moment you would jump over it.
Yes, if it happens you die. So, as you see the low fire ball coming first, go
back. Eventually the high one will come as you flee. Crouch, even facing the
right tower, and let it pass. Time to jump the low? No, this game has inertia,
and trying to jump while facing the opposing side will most times reduce the
length of your jump. Risky, huh? Now remember you have no way to get more lives
in this game. Did it? Ok, so, enter the right tower, wait for a good moment to
get out and restart crossing the bridge.
-------> Storeroom area
The bridge is virtually equal for all stages. Even the first dragon may kill
you if you don't know what you are doing. However, once you learn it, no more
problems.
Storerooms are different. The first ones start really easy, as the dragons are
slow and dumb, but when it comes to the hard stages, mastering them is much
harder. Keep in mind that, to get a high score, you will face the bad white
dragon tons of times. Also, the white dragon runs much faster than you, and its
fire balls move vertically faster than you.
Hard, but it can be done, thanks to this game having inertia! Use the dragon's
acceleration against it.

Above, it's a picture which represents a storeroom area in the game screen. "S"
is your shelter. Imagine the items around the room. "X" marks the worst
position an item can be: in the center, vertically very close to the dragon.
"A", "B", "C" and "D" are vertical positions I will use to explain how to use
the inertia for your profit. When I say they are vertical positions, I mean you
can consider positions at same vertical line, above or under those.
- DON'T keep moving from one side to the other of the game screen, from A to D
and vice versa. The white dragon is faster, will reach you and spit tons of
fire balls.
- Instead, imagine the initial situation: the dragon in A, and the prince
leaves his shelter to position C. A white dragon comes running so fast it will
pass by the prince, spitting 1-2 fire balls, and stopping at D. Don't move to
A, instead reach B, and start returning to C. Again, the dragon accelerates
way too much, pass by your position spitting a few fire balls, and stops at A.
If you keep moving from B to C and vice versa, the dragon keeps moving from D
to A and vice versa, passing by you and throwing almost nothing at you.
- Ok, but you also need to collect the items. Let's imagine there is an item at
position A. As you come from C to B, the dragon will be leaving A and will stop
at D, then it returns. You will have time to collect the item, and start going
right. As you see the dragon accelerating and passing by the prince, stop or
move left. Always continue using the dragon acceleration against it.
- NEVER stay in a horizontal position too close to the dragon. If the item is
closer to the bottom, move diagonally down after the dragon passed. As you move
to the opposing side, do it diagonally up.
- Now, there is an item in the "X" position. First, collect all other items. To
get it, I recommend getting close to position B, and as the dragon passes, dive
to it and run to your shelter. Leaving it just to cross the screen in a
diagonal direction shouldn't be hard. If the item is a bit to left, you can
also try getting it and going all the way to the exit. Fire balls are faster
than you, but as you move first, you should have enough time.
---------------> 2.5) Items and scoring
In this game, you will find 9 different treasure items to collect, most of them
pretty well drawn, for early 80's of course. Note that not all items are
avaliable for all stages. However, this doesn't really matter much, as you will
(supposedly) spend more time against white dragons than anything else.
All items you collect do 1-4 "ding!" sounds. More "ding!" means more points.
There are items worthy 10, 60, 200 and 400 points.
Not really an item, but ending any stage by reaching its exit will add 100
points to your score, also producing two "ding!" sounds.
=======================================================

=======================================================
---------------> 2.6) Dragons
There are nine different dragons, you can recognize them by their color. The
color is also showed in the bridge, in some dragon heads painted there.
-------> Stage 1, green dragon in white castle.
It doesn't run, and in fact doesn't really care much about you. The prince is
just warming up, too, and is not running at maximum speed yet. If you move
vertically, you will have same speed of the fire balls.
-------> Stage 2, yellow dragon in light green castle.
It also doesn't run, just turns a little faster to go after you.
-------> Stage 3, blue dragon in yellow castle.
This one is the first that accelerates, but is not faster than the prince.
-------> Stage 4, purple dragon in light green castle.
Very alike to the previous dragon, except for the color.
-------> Stage 5, red dragon in light blue castle.
Although this dragon isn't faster than the little prince, now you will run at
maximum speed. Warming time is over. Curiosly, the fire balls aren't faster
than in the previous stages, so in this single stage you are faster than the
fire balls while moving up.
-------> Stage 6, yellow dragon in purple castle.
Yeah, same color of the second dragon. Not faster than you, but it's more agile
to go after you. Now, fire balls are faster too, and again have the same
vertical speed of your friendly prince.
-------> Stage 7, orange dragon in green castle
This one runs faster than the prince. If moving from one side of the game
screen to the other was working, it's now risky.
-------> Stage 8, black dragon in purple castle.
Very alike to the previous dragon.
-------> Stage 9, white dragon in pink castle.
This is the worst the game can do: this dragon is really fast, much faster than
you, and its fire balls also travel vertically faster than you. Once you beat
this stage, be ready to face white dragons forever, as they are all you will
encounter.
---------------> 2.7) Game modes
Pressing the videogame (or emulator) mode button, you will cycle through 8 game
modes. These are showed by two numbers. The left number refers to which stage
you want the game to start: 1, 3, 5 or 7. The right number is the number of
players, 1 or 2.
As you probably realized, this game can be played by two players. If this
option is choosen, it happens this way:
- Player 1 plays the first stage (1, 3, 5 or 7, as selected by game modes). If
he / she loses a life, it doesn't matter, he / she will still play until the
stage is complete or all lives are lost.
- Then, it's player 2 turn to play the very same stage. Again, player 2 plays
until stage is complete or all lives are lost.
- Time for player 1 to play the second stage. This is followed by player 2
playing the same stage.
- When a player dies seven times, the game continues like a solo game for the
remaining player.
- Note that player 1 has score and lives in black, and player 2 has score and
lives in red. Once both are dead, the game alternates showing both final
scores.

---------------> 2.8) Alternative modes
These are just some game modes I have created for fun, try them if you wish.
- Ding! mode: once you pick an item, you have to wait for all "ding!" sounds
before getting another one.
- Crescent mode: you have to pick the items in a specific order, from the ones
that award lower score, for the ones that give higher score. Decrescent mode is
also possible.
- Math mode: once you enter the treasure room, return to the shelter and
analyze if there is a way to produce a "perfect thousand score" (like 13000
points) getting some of the items. If there is a way, you are forced to try it.
This one also improves your math skills.
- Item mode: choose an item. Every time there are items of the chosen type, you
have to save them to collect after all others.
Note that trying to play these modes is already a challenge, as you need to
avoid not only fire balls, but items most times, you will die more frequently.
But, if you want be harsh, you can adopt a penalty system. Each time you
disobey the mode command, it's a fault. After some faults, let's say, about
five faults, you need to concede a life. Just a suggestion.
==============================/ Chapter 3: MORE /==============================
---------------> 3.1) Points per stage
I have tried to determine how many points you should score per stage. To this,
I took note of how many items of each type appeared during a number of games.
These are the results:
===============================================================

NOTE: sample is 50 games for stage 1-8, 120 for 9+. L = Lamp: J = Jug; G =
Goblet; He = Helmet; Ca = Candelabra; Ch = Chest; Ha = Harp; D = Diamond; Cr =
Crown.
As you can realize, the chance is not the same for all items. With the bigger
sample for 9+ levels, it's easy to understand that the Lamp has around doubled
chance of appearing, compared to other items.
Is it possible that an item has a chance that is not a multiple of 1/8? Yeah,
some data suggest it, like 79 jugs for stage 3, and 27 harps for stage 5. It's
probable that a bigger sample would help to realize if this happens.
For now, I assume these as normal distortions, and considering that each item
has a chance that is a multiple of 1/8, expected items for each stage would be:
=========================================================================

"Pred" is the predicted score for that level, "real" is the medium score from
the games I registered, and variation is the comparison between real and
predicted scores.
Like said, highest variations are for stages 3 and 5, which are the ones with a
greater chance of us having a "split" item, like 1,5 jug and 1,5 chest for
stage 3, instead of 2 jugs and 1 chest. I still believe these are distortions,
would be very strange have stage 3 being worthy more points than stage 4, but
still, we would need more data.
---------------> 3.2) FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Q: Oh, God, why to create a guide for an old Atari game?
A: Why not? This one was even much easier and faster than my other guides.
Also, this game has no guides as far as I know.
Q: You really played this game in Atari videogame?
A: Sure! We (me and my older brother) had it, together with 100+ other Atari
games. Of course, I can't say we did any good at it, I was around 9 years
old, and our record was like 10k points.
Q: Which emulator do you use to play it?
A: I currently use Stella 4.6.7. The game works perfectly, but the emulator is
nothing special, it doesn't have even save features. I guess I'm just lazy
about looking for good Atari emulators. If you have any to recommend, then
e-mail me.
Q: Where can I download Dragonfire ROM?
A: I will try having it on my site (geocities.ws/myoldgames/). I guess it
causes no copyright issues, as even the source code was made public domain
by the developer, Bob Smith, in 2003. Alternatively, you can use google for
a search. It shouldn't be hard to find, as sites classify its rarity as "2"
in a 1-10 a rarity scale for Atari 2600 roms, 1 being for really common
games.
Q: What's your highest score?
A: My highest score is 246870 up to now, but I'm not done with it yet.I intend
to get a score around 400k.
Q: Is there a way to get extra lives?
A: No. You start with seven lives, and that's all you will have.
Q: What do you like / hate the most about this game?
A: I like the fast, fluid action the most. The challenge level is good but not
impossible, and I like it too. Many Atari games get faster and faster until
they are virtually unplayable. Now, I don't really hate it, as I understand
it's part of the challenge, but I would like to get extra lives. Not too
many, let's say, about 25-30k points?
Q: What's you favourite item?
A: Surely, the diamond. It's worthy 400 points and, in fact, the graphs are
really nice for a game this old.
Q: There are other Atari 2600 games alike this one?
A: Probably, but I doubt they are better than Dragonfire. What makes this game
really shining is that it has a difficulty cap which is doable, unlike most
Atari games. This is perfect for an old survival game.
Q: I'm having problems to beat those white dragons!
A: Check Chapter 2 of this guide for advice. I intend to record a video, too.
When it's ready, I will upload it and let you all know ;O)
Q: I have a different / better strategy!
A: Really? Ok, then. E-mail me at ‘
[email protected]’ and tell me about it.
Of course, credit will be given to you.
Q: Is the prince praying when he crouches?
A: Dunno but, well, probably. At least, it looks like it.
Q: Wait! How can the prince jump while crouching / praying?
A: I believe that, if we could ask him, he would reply a "monty python-like"
answer: "when you are the prince, you have to know things like this".
Q: Where is the prince carrying all those items?
A: Magic pockets, little grasshopper. Magic dimensional pockets, in fact. Like
the ones Sonic uses to carry all those rings, and are also used by several
other heros.
Q: Isn't the prince a little, huh, short?
A: Compared to the dragons? I don't think so. Thinking about the size of some
items (like the goblet, the helmet or the crown), I guess there are giants
in this kingdom who could easily beat the dragons. Well, unless they are ice
giants, it is.
Q: You call this a FAQ? Looks like a bunch of bad jokes!
A: And you are still reading, aren't you? Thanks for your time.
Q: Anything else?
A: Ok, as a nice extra, have a look at the old commercial for American TV. All
are the same video ;O)

---------------> 3.3) You! Help improving this guide!
This guide is supposed to never be finished. I will always add anything new or
relevant about Dragonfire. If you know something I don't, please use my e-mail
to contact me, put something like "Dragonfire" as the message title. Here is my
e-mail:

All help is also welcome, especially the following:
- I’m not a native speaker of English language. Of course, the guide has
grammatical errors, misspelling errors, etc. I’m especially bad with
prepositions. If you are a native English speaker, and can help me to correct
these language errors, I would appreciate a lot.
- As said at the “Legal info” section (1.2), please inform me if you see this
guide on any internet site that is not among the allowed sites listed there.
- Do you disagree about any comments? Do you have a question for the FAQ? Maybe
you have a better strategy. Any positive criticism is welcome.
---------------> 3.4) Acknowledgments
Before finishing my guide, I would like to thank:
- God, for the gift of life.
- My family, for my education and all they have done for me.
- Bob Smith and Imagic, for developing this great game.
- All the sites legally hosting my guide.
- All my friends (including Troia Team), for making my life happier.
- Daniel M. Santos, for being a great friend and gaming (and beer) companion.
- All other people I may have forgotten.
That’s it. See you next guide.
