I.   INTRO
---------------------------------------------------

I woke up one morning in 2009, and thought of a game I played in 1987, on an
Apple IIe/IIgs.  Not that many people play these wonderful games much anymore,
and not that you can find these games very easily either, and not that I could
remember the name.  I finally found the game online, when I found out the
correct way to spell Zoyon, and found out that it was Patrol, not Park (the
real kicker).  I found someone's blog who listed some apple disk archive sites,
found a exhaustive one, found the game and now play it.  Now I need a strategy
guide, and need to write a wikipedia page since nether of these exist (yet.)
I hope this guide helps anyone who finds it.

Zoyon Patrol is a problem-solving science simulation designed for grades 7-12.

The player assumes a role as director of a wildlife protection agency
responsible for the rescue of the endangered species that wander into the city.
The player must capture the animal in order to win.

Each of the succeeding levels increase in difficulty: messages and responses
become more common, and the zoyon become more difficult to catch.  At the Grand
Master level, you will be faced with the ultimate challenge of trying to track
down two zoyons simultaneously.

IV.  GAME INTRO (OVERALL)
---------------------------------------------------

Zaphyr Island is an imaginary island in the South Pacific, located at 7ø52'
South latitude and 178ø28' East longitude.  Named after it's discoverer, Basil
Zaphyr, the island's most unique features are it's rich variety of natural
habitat regions, and the native wildlife that inhabit it.

Cute, friendly and unique to Zaphyr Island, the animals, called Zoyons, are an
endangered species [actually many] that must be protected.  Occasionally they
wander into Zaphyropolis, the island's capital city.  They search for food,
water, shelter, amusement, and a habitat that reminds them of home.

They mayor has created an agency called the Zoyon patrol, to locate, trap, and
return the Zoyons to their active habitat.  He has appointed you to be it's
director.  From your computerized control room, you will direct a trained staff
and manage all agency resources.

As the Zoyons wander about, people send messages to the Zoyon Patrol, reporting
that they have seen a Zoyon.  If you ask them for more information, they will
describe what they can remember about the Zoyon.  It is important to ask them
for more information in order to identify the Zoyon.

Mayor Baldwin has some helpful hints: Remember to get all the information you
can from message senders, use the database to identify the Zoyon, and use your
staff and resources to trap it.  The database information will help you to
figure out what trap and bait to use.  Watch the budget.  Welcome aboard!

After gathering information from the message, you can use the database to
identify which Zoyon is loose in the city.  Then you can use the maps to locate
where they Zoyon is and send your staff out to trap it, or gather more data.
You can even use the Lempel, a trained Zoyon tracking animal to track it down.

---------------------------------------------------

Orientation
------------------
Day Month Date, Year                                                  Time
Welcome to your new job as Zoyon Patrol director.

The agency budget contains $10,000.  Agency expeditres must not exceed this
amount.  We have reports that * [usually 1] Zoyon(s) are loose in the city
at this time.

Your assignment: to locate the animals and return them to thier natural
habitat.  Take as much time as you need, but watch your budget and your public
opinion.

Good luck!

VI.  ***GAME PLAY***
---------------------------------------------------

There are four modes.  Beginner, intermediate, Master and Grand Master.  You
oftentimes have one Zoyon, but Grand Masters always have 2 (I think).  Higher
level games unlock more Zoyons, and make it near impossible to identify either.

Zoyon Patrol uses a menu based system.  This sections describes the options and
what they do.

The menu name is displayed on the top line.  Below that are the Day, Time, and
how many messages you have not read.  The last two lines tell you what key will
get what result.

See below for tips, and see section 4 for any question.  The game has built-in
reference.

A NOTE ON MAPS FOR SECTION 3 AND 4:
On any map: Using Closed Apple-? brings up help.

On any map: Closed Apple-A.
This will toggle (turn on and off) the flags from the screen.  (M, T, O, and L)
DEFAULT: On

On any map: Closed Apple-B.
This will allow you to switch between the 16 boroughs.  Sometime Zoyons will
cross lines to surrounding boroughs.  DFEAULT: Varies by game.

On any map: Closed Apple-H.
This will allow you to display the habitat legend (key).  Then you can tell the
terrain type of the different colors and patterns.  DEFAULT: Off

On any map: Closed Apple-S.
This will allow you to display or hide the street's names.  DEFAULT: On

1. READ MESSAGES
You get a numbered message, with a name, address and borough.  They say they
saw a Zoyon. Take note of any food they say it ate, or what it was doing.
These things may provide additional clues once you reduce the number of Zoyons
that it could be.

1.1. See Next Message
Go to the next message that came from them, or that you made to them.

1.2. See Previous Message
Go to the last message that came from them, or that you made to them.

1.3. Get More Information
If you do this, you will often time get a piece of helpful information about
the Zoyon that you can use to help identify it.  At beginner level you should
always always always do this.  At more advanced level you should do this as
often as possible, but see 1.4, below.

1.4. Verify the Information
Not everyone is truthful, or very good at doing this.  You call and check to
see if the information is real or not.

Note: You cannot request more information AND verify the message.  You can only
do one or the other, and many people cannot be reached at all.  In beginner, I
would advise to never verify the message since you always (in my experience)
get "Of course, I saw one", usually with some snide remark.  In higher levels
you may wish to verify the information, especially if it from a borough that
is clear across town (like if you get a message from Kitty Hawk, when all
sightings have been in Shoreview.  Or if you know yourself to be chasing a
nocturnal Zoyon, and you get daytime reports.  Or a diurnal one and you get
reports at night.)

2.  IDENTIFY ZOYON
This is where you attempt to identify your Zoyon.

2.1 Specify Characteristic
When you get more information from callers, the science team, observer
interviews, and so forth, you can oftentimes enter something here.

Color: What color was it?  Grey, Brown, Black, Orange?
Cover: What was it covered with?  Scales, Hair, Quills, Skin, Fur?
Ears: What shape were it's ears? Tufted, Pointed, Round, Floppy?
Eyes: What color were it's eyes? Brown, Blue, Green, Yellow?
Family: Do you know what family it is in? Ambidae, Auralidea, Auridae,
Chimeridae, Lagomidae, Primatidae, Nasidae?  (Only the science team might be
able to provide this, I think, but I have never had this information avaiable.)
Foot: How many digits (toes) did each foot it have?  3, 4, 5?
Height: How high was it?  8-12", 10-20", 18-25", 20-30", 24-36", 30 45", 40-50,
or 45-60" inches?  This is a poor field since many sizes fall into 2 or 3
ranges.  i.e.: a 25" Zoyon could be 18-25, 20-30, or 24-36)
Tail: What did it's tail look like?  Flat, Bushy, Striped, Tufted, Scaly,
Banded, Prehensile (able to grasp things, i.e.: monkeys)?
Weight: How much did it weigh? 10-18, 15-25, 20-35, 30-50, 40-65, 75-110,
100-160 lbs.  (This is another poor field.)

After putting in some information ad eliminating all but a few Zoyons, check
which ones.  Sometime a specific reported activity, or behavior will be listed
in one which can increase the likelihood that is the one.  For instance Elecoon
have been known to play with swings.  Quaklerat thumps it;s tail when happy.

2.2 See Zoyon Information
Dictionary Information on many Zoyons. Grand Master has the most possibilities
with 40.  It will give the taxonomic family, genus and species name.  Beneath
that is any information on cover, ears, eyes, foot, height, sound, tail, and
weight information.  (Note that since you cannot enter sound, once you get down
to 3 or 4 Zoyons, you can check here and narrow it down further.) There is also
a Description.  Most important to take note of is WHERE IT LIVES and WHAT IT
EATS.  For more information see the Zoyon database below.

3. ASSIGN TEAMS

This is how you try to catch a Zoyon.  On the maps  M' shows a message.  X'
shows a trap.   O' shows observers.   L' shows the Lempel

3.1 Get Status of Teams.
This screen shows you the status of the observation teams, the science team,
the trapping team, and the Lempel.

3.2 Send out Science Team
This will bring up a map.  Select the intersection you wish to send the team
to.  They tell you when they will get there, They tell you how long they will
investigate for.  The tell you they will send a message when done.  They cost
$200.  The information they send is often pivotal after beginner's level.

3.3 Set a Trap
Here you can set a trap.  You have traps from various sizes, types and bait.
Traps cost from $100-500, including cost for setting them up.  After choosing a
size, type, and bait for a trap, The trapping team tell you how long it will
take to set.  They say they will notify you if it is set off.

Trap types, uses, and baits:

3.3.1. 20" Net Trap ($100)
Use on treetop and swamp dwelling Zoyons not exceeding 20"

3.3.2. 24" Enclosure Trap ($150)
Use on enclosure seeking Zoyons not exceeding 24"

3.3.3. 28" Burrow Trap ($200)
Use on burrowing Zoyons not exceeding 28"

3.3.4. 34" Net Trap ($250)
Use on treetop and swamp dwelling Zoyons not exceeding 34"

3.3.5. 40" Enclosure Trap ($250)
Use on enclosure seeking Zoyons not exceeding 40"

3.3.6. 48" Burrow Trap ($300)
Use on burrowing Zoyons not exceeding 48"

3.3.7. 64" Net Trap ($400)
Use on treetop and swamp dwelling Zoyons not exceeding 64"

3.3.8. 72" Enclosure Trap ($500)
Use on enclosure seeking Zoyons not exceeding 72"

3.3.*.1 Bananas
Use on Zoyons that eat fruit.

3.3.*.2 Cashews
Use on Zoyons that eat nuts.

3.3.*.3 Crickets
Use on Zoyons that eat insects.

3.3.*.4 Hamburger
Use on Zoyons that eat meat.

3.3.*.5 Honey
Use on Zoyons that eat sweet stuff.

3.3.*.6 Lettuce
Use on Zoyons that eat vegetables.

3.3.*.7 Pepperoni Pizza
Use on Zoyons that eat pizza.

3.3.*.8 Popcorn
Use on Zoyons that eat snacks.

3.4 Check a Trap
You use this option when you have had a trap sprung.  when a trap is sprung a
popup box will appear.  MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH TRAP WAS SPRUNG SO THEY KNOW
WHICH ONE TO CHECK.  The trap team tells you how long it will take to check it.
You cannot check a trap, until one has been set off.

3.5 Move a Trap
The number of traps you may set is limited.  So if you run out, or make an
error, you am move the trap.  The cost you pay is $50.

3.6 Release Tracking Animal
Release the Lempel.  This will crate a L on the map.  The team tells how long
it will be until it is released, and it will cost $500 (including tracking).

3.7 Send Out Observers
Observer teams will talk to locals, and get you more information.  They cost
$50 an hour, and only work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, unlike the science team.
Sending observers out also make the people happier with you.

3.8 Cancel Observer Assignment
Order the observers to return to the Zoyon Patrol HQ.

4. USE REFERENCE LIBRARY
Lots of excellent information is here.  If you have not played before, you
should go here and read all this first.  Then start a new game and get down to
finding that Zoyon!

4.1. Use Maps
This shows you the main map that you will be using.  You may need to use more
then one borough to catch a long-term of fast moving Zoyon.  The borough are:
Tanis, Olympus, Stuttgart, Sherwood Forest, Gondolin, Solace, El Dorado,
Avalon, Kitty Hawk. Camelot, Arisia, Majestic oaks, Zaphyr Point, Botany bay,
Shoreview, and Panglossia.  (In my experience the Zoyon is often found in the
southeast, but the game set you default borough for you.  Using closed apple B
will allow you to switch boroughs when the Zoyon does.)

4.2. Use Glossary
This is a useful glossary.  If you come across a word or phrase you don't
understand, check here.

4.3. See Metro Information
These screen show the 16 part map, and has a paragraph or two of basic
information about each, whether it is resorts, if there is an airport, and so
on about each area.  This information does not have any use I can see but it is
nice to know.  Some Zoyon also enjoy specific terrains and that information is
listed here.  This information can be used to screen out possible false leads.

4.4. See Staff Information
These screens show what each type of staffing team does and costs. including
the science, observer, trapping and Lempel team.    The observer team generall
interviews locals.  The science team is more thorough.  The trapping team deal
with the traps, and the lempel team with the lempel.

WHAT IS A LEMPEL?  The Lempel is a trained Zoyon who goes out and loves to play
with other Zoyons.  It wears a radio collar so you have round-the-clock
tracking anywhere in the city.

4.5. See Trapping Information
This section explain which type of traps, and bait to use depending on the
Zoyon you wish to catch.  If the zoyon nets in tree tops or swamps, use nets.
If the zoyon like enclosed place use enclosure traps.  If the zoyon lives
underground, use borrow traps.  If you don't know, where it lives, and you get
little information from calls, you will have to use a variety.  You will also
have to see what you can bait the trap with.

5. GET A STATUS REPORT
This screen tell you the date, the time used so far, the budget, and remaining
budget, public opinion, which borough the Lempel is in, weather, temperature,
pressure, time of sunrise and time of sunset.

6. TAKE A BREAK
This allows you to speed up time, but be ready to hit escape to stop it, as
messages accrue, the Zoyon moves fast, the observers move fast (and quit at 5),
and so on.

7. QUIT
Quit your job and the game.  Also allows you to save the game.

A few parting words:
- Answer messages, verify suspicious ones (like ones form across town), and
call people back for
more information.
- Identifying the Zoyon is top priority. Then you can usually find out what it
eats, and how it lives.
- Use the correct trap type of the correct size with the correct bait near the
Zoyon.

---------------------------------------------------
VII. ***ZOYON DATABASE BY SPECIES***
---------------------------------------------------

Well, after working all day I think I got this.  I will post known information
first.  In some case I have speculated.  In most cases I tried to speculate by
other member of it's genus and family, since if you speculate, "Well other
Zoyons with 5 digits have grey fur", the best response is "So what?"  I tried
to stay mostly in the realm of what is scientifically most likely.  If there
was nothing that worked scientifically I tried some non-scientific methods.
(i.e.: Like saying many zoyons of this color, have eyes of that color.)
Although remember this: UNKNOWN MEANS UNKNOWN.  I have no proof, just some
good, educated guesses.  This information could be entirely wrong.  If you have
information that you are CERTAIN of, or techniques that work send them to me
and I will update the database (and list you in the acknowledgment section.)
The easiest way to do this, is to find an unknown zoyon, and call people back
for more information send out observers, and the science team.  The observers,
science team, and calling people back make then happier too keeping your public
opinion good.

The database follows, and at the end is an outline by various important
characteristics.

VIII.***ZOYON DATABASE BY FEATURES***
---------------------------------------------------

The following lists describe zoyon by individual characteristic, as it is known
(not noted) and suspected (noted by [s], and a likelihood on a 1(Over 0%, but
under 17% chance liklihood) - 7(only for 100% chance) scale.  Keep in mind
unknown is still unknown, so I don't assign everything to every list.)  This
list is useful if you get more information then what you need.  For instance,
you get told it had tufted ears and you can enter that.  Then you are told it
had large ears.  You can cross-reference the list the game five you with the
list below for large ears to narrow it further.  This list become more and more
useful at higher level of the game so you can just make list of the 40 zoyons
(a name list is posted as a separate file), and then check off which ones you
know it is not and suspect.  The game never deals with suspected zoyons, and in
beginner it is pretty easy to pin down which 1 of 8 it is.  In grand master you
have to pin down which 2 of 40, and oftentimes you do not have complete
information.  Also notice some fields will add up to more then 40, and some
zoyon may appear in multiple categories.
