1. INTRODUCTION
I thought Horizon V was a reasonably fun game as a kid. It had that neat
perspective where you had radar and traveled over a grid, and I figured you
just sort of shot a bunch of monsters til your fuel ran out, and I just
wasn't good enough to shoot them all. It was easy to get on the high score
list, too!
Then I realized it was pretty hopeless, and I didn't know what to do to get
to the next level, and the game annoyed me terribly. It wasn't until I went
to GameFAQs and eventually mentioned I hated it that I got some advice on
what to do.
Horizon V shows off what it can do a bit--it's neat to go through the motions
a few times, but then the fun drops off. Still, if you're like me and never
got through the game, here's a guide.
2. CONTROLS AND PURPOSE
AZ and the arrows accelerate you around, space fires, and Q shields. You have
3 lives, and they are lost if a missile hits you or if you run out of fuel.
You're more likely to run out of fuel once you get pretty good with the game.
It's easy to get caught up in shooting enemies.
Radar in the top right shows where the enemies are--there are usually about
three. The upper left has two diamonds which tell you where the refueling
area is. Half the diamond will appear telling you the direction you should
go. You will never be able to stay in one place--the grid will be moving ins
some direction or other. So once you get close, you have to bounce around a
bit.
Firing may seem to go off to one side, but that is because you are moving to
one side.
In general you can tell how fast you are going by how the grid is moving.
To get to the next level, you need to stand on a fuel hole. The way to do
this is to get the UL so no arrows are flashing and sit there for a while.
You will obviously want to be moving slowly once you get in close, and you
may have to bump around a bit before it happens.
Before the next level, there is a tunnel with monsters(AZ <> causes it to
spin clockwise/counterclockwise.) You need to shoot a few to get to the one
without monsters, then you need to move to the center of the next one and
stabilize there. There's no way to lose a ship, but it can take a while if
you don't get it right.
100/200 points for owls(100 in the level tunnel)
300 for spiders
400 for tie fighters
1 extra bonus point for 1st enemy shot in the round, which I always found
amusing
3. STRATEGIES
Move away from shots instead of using shields.
Don't back up to pick off enemies that pass--they'll pop up soon enough.
However, you will be able to move side to side to pick them off. Try to get
and stay horizontally level with the fuel hole. That makes one thing less to
do with the fuel. Besides, if you are going vertically too fast, enemies run
at you too quickly to line them up.
Obviously go for the enemies worth the most points if you have a choice. No
one is more difficult than any other.
Fuel empties at 10:30 PM on the gauge(45 degrees left of top) when the needle
touches the "E" so if you're not vertically aligned you need to start going
back once you are under half fuel. This doesn't give you very long to go
shooting. You may have to use shields here.
When enemies are mid sized is the best time to shoot them. You can notice
whether they are moving horizontally faster than the grid to determine when
to shoot. If slower, wait for them to be past the brackets. If larger, shoot
early. Also note that shots come in on the left and right alternately, so
often two quick shots are a good idea, or you can junk one while lining the
enemy up.
In the fuel hole try to line things up so enemies appearing at the center go
down. Rotate accordingly.

5. VERSIONS/CREDITS
Thanks to GameFAQs for being, well, THERE.
asimov.net and/or all its mirrors, for keeping the memories alive.
Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog,
Lagoona, Da Hui and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-
yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his gang, but I want
him to be part of mine.
Thanks to bloomer especially for explaining how to leave level 1.
Thanks to apple2.org.za for the cheat.
