Debian version blues

It used to be that just downloading MS updates (not running them)  caused the OS to become unnstable. Now I am beginning to wonder if Debian is suffering a similar circumstance in the run up to "Trixie".  Or perhaps it is just the recently loaded instance of Debian 6.1.128-1 - the depths of complexity I will never fathom.  Either way there has been a shift in the force.
