A few words should be written here, in the unlikely event that I have followed the tutorial correctly this time.
And it looks like it has worked.
So, instead of creating any additional posts now, I'll edit this one.
I was following ~tomasino's tutorial in the wiki, but seemed to be tripping up over the use of the burrow command, and where and what it was doing. I think I was mangling the way the root gophermap is structured and creates links.
