At some point I realized that for me the Internet is first of all
a collection of texts. Since the net has been enriched with
graphics, images, video etc, it has not become less interesting,
but it has lost its innocence. A certain amateurish charm of the
early days is gone. When I discovered the Internet, the World Wide
Web was already established and Gopher was history. Back in those
days I didn't even know of its existence. Today, however, Gopher
strikes me as a refuge for texts that want to be public, but do
not like to be exposed in a commercialized neighborhood. I'm glad
to see that I am not alone.
