I recently bought a universal power adapter from amazon to power my
external 1TB hard drive. It came with 8 different types of plugs plus
a USB socket. I bought it as it is rated for 1.5A as was the late
adapter of the hard drive. The original still seems to work, but it
fails to supply enough power after a short time and the drive switches
off. I was terrified at first as a lot of stuff is on that drive and I
did not have the time to create backups for everything. But soon it
turned out that the power adapter was the culprit.
Today I tried to plug the new adapter into the drive selecting the
most suitable plug and checking the polarity, but I could not turn the
drive on. So the adapter is not as universal as I thought. The smaller
plug simply does not fit and the one I managed to plug in has no real
contact with the socket. So I have to use my old adapter, but that one
is only rated for 1A. I hope it won't die till I copy all the stuff to
another drive.
