Back on public transport

My team at Google has been moved to a new building, part of the
Europallee buildings in Zurich. Besides the usual changes one
expects after location moves, I've decided to stop driving to work
and take public transport again.
From my home to the old office location it took me less than 25
minutes driving, plus I could charge my electric car for free at
work which made parking really cheap. The new location however is
about 40 minutes driving, because I have to drive into the city
center. Parking is more than double the old cost and there is no EV
charging. | |
Adding all the additional costs and time spent, it would more than
pay for the annual public transport ticket. I bought a 9-o'clock
pass from ZVV (the local public transport company), for all zones.
So I can ride the train, buses and trams anywhere in the ZVV network
after 9AM during business days or anytime during the weekend.
This is now my second week taking the bus and train. I'm still
getting used to the schedule and memorizing the best and alternative
routes, but I like it so far. It definitely takes longer, about one
hour door-to-door, but I feel it's more productive than 40 minutes
driving. I can listen to my podcast subscriptions, or to audiobooks
(I actually just started testing audiobooks this week, because of
this "free" time). | |
We're still driving during the weekend, taking the kids to parks or
the public pool, but so far I don't miss driving to work. It may be
too soon, I hope not. | |
Re: [tomasino] About the shakuhachi.
One of my favorite pieces to listen to is "San An", specially the
performances by Katsuya Yokoyama. He was a master and "San An" a
masterpiece. |
