Introduction to Linux Systems Administration
by Mikko Korhonen
This text is based on a Linux Administration course I taught as a student
at the Oulu Lyseo high school. The content of this English translation is
mostly the same as the taught material, albeit with references to the spe-
cific system configuration in use at the Lyseo removed.
This course originally came to be over 20 years ago, when the student sys-
admin club was established in 1993. I do not know who wrote the orignal
material for the course, but I suspect some influence of it remains in
the present text. I express my gratitude especially to Juho Rinta-Paavola,
who prepared the previous version of the course material that some parts
of this text are based on as well as Riku Karvonen for his assistance dur-
ing my time as the benevolent dictator of the sysadmin club.
In general this course attempts to provide a general look into Linux ad-
ministration. The text does not really form a complete course, as the
original course included recitation sections and exercises. However I
hope this text is at least somewhat useful as a broad introduction to
the topic.
