A Small Web July
Did you know about smolweb July? I didn't... well, at least not until today.
I was spending my day off work exploring the smolweb, an activity I find
myself doing more and more these days, when I came across smol.pub and a post
on it by drmollytov titled "Small Web July (but make it forever)"[1]. This lead
me to three other posts by small cypress[2], straydogstrut[3] and
starbreaker[4] on the topic.
I've had a fascination with offline-first and low-power computing for a long
time. Professionally, I use high end computers to write fancy software and do
wiz-bang things but my personal computing habits are quite the opposite. I
write this post today from a relatively old Thinkpad running almost
exclusively terminal based applications (and getting more exclusively terminal
based every day). It only follows that I would be drawn to the smolweb. Not
only is it a more grass roots, community focused space online but it lends
itself well to running on my preferred computing platforms (old and
underpowered).
So, here I am, joining the small web July... event? But I guess, in reality, I
more or less already live a small web life, of sorts. I have been off the big
social media platforms for a long time now, years I think. I've used text
based medium for browsing and sharing content for equally as long. I still use
Youtube, but I try to limit my exposure to their recommendation engines by
using alternative interfaces to Youtube, such as ytfzf_prime[5]. I also
consume most media through RSS, as part of my offline-first philosphy.
And to supplement my digital greens, so to speak, I'm increasing my exercise.
I, generally, don't have an issue with exercise due to my love for cycling but
I'm making a real effort this month to choose being outside over watching TV
and movies in my free time. Touching some grass as the kids say.
I hope you choose to touch some grass too this month
