Camaraderie

Sitting at the Yummy Donut this morning, enjoying a not-so-yummy
donut (chocolate glaze covers up whatever's wrong with the fry oil)
and a smoothie. Watched the workers come in, usually in crews wearing
the same company T-shirts. Most got coffee. Some got sandwiches,
presumably for lunch.

Outside, a man walked buy with a cart containing aluminum cans he'd
gleaned from the city trash cans at bus stops and wherever. He comes
by every morning and checks the can outside the donut shop.

One of the crews was getting into their truck when the driver yelled
out at the can man, "Hey buddy, wait a minute." He hopped out of his
truck holding a plastic bag full of cans and handed the bag to the
guy, then gave him half of his donut. It was heartwarming.

We are all passengers on this crazy planet, each of us prisoners in
the same institution. It's nice to see camaraderie, but I think it's
deeply part of our very souls. We need others. No man is an island,
and all that. Here was someone with food and resources, not a
millionaire, mind you, but one of us working stiffs, giving of his
resources to someone who probably had fewer. Looking out for the
other guy.

And perhaps that's why I stop at Yummy Donut every morning. Lord
knows it's not for the donuts. I like the people who work there. They
know me now. Know what I like. It's nice to be known like that. I
don't know their names, but it seems like we are closer than some
people whose names I do know. And there are the people on the bus I
know. I see them every day. The older lady who gets on in front of
the bank wears a "housekeeping" uniform for a hotel. The aboriginal
woman who sits at the front listening to music on her iPhone. And
there are those who, you'll know if you've read my previous posts,
probably aren't even actually here, but to me they are. They are good
companions, all of them.

And this brings me to you. Yes, you. You are someone who has decided
to read this flog. You've made it this far into it, and are still
reading it. And I appreciate that. I read other glogs and phlogs here
on SDF's gopher site as well, getting to know a little more about the
people behind the keyboards. And I hope you've gotten to know a
little more about me. We stand together, us gophers, for whatever
reason, whether we are against the web-world, or just enjoy using
older tech that still serves a purpose. We are comrades, you and I.
And we are stuck in this prison called our universe, inmates together
because of the powers-that-be that hold us here. Welcome, comrades.
