Technology/email spam, (sdf.org), 03/05/2019
------------------------------------------------------------
The "spammers" I'm talking about here are the companies that
you purchase services or products from, but who you really
don't want to get email from on a regular basis. You want
important emails, but not junk, and they just don't know the
difference (see "willful ignorance.")

So, they send their junk email, and I delete it. I try to
opt-out when possible, but it doesn't matter, I get junk
anyway. I do make an effort, honestly, but no matter how
hard I try, there's always going to be some. Ah well, that's
life.

Of course, these spam messages are riddled with tracking
mechanisms ("pixels" for the non-technical jargon-of-the-
day types.) I have images turned off, so these tracking
mechanisms failed; the spammers have no way of knowing if
their messages are coming through.

And that's where the desperation kicks in. Inevitably, I
get emails begging me in the subject line to open them up
and read. My account might not be functioning properly,
they can't tell if the emails are going to the right place,
and something terrible is probably going to happen. I delete
them with the rest of the junk, and nothing bad ever
happens.

Still, the desperation makes me laugh a little. The
marketing dept. is so desperate the justify their existence,
they'll do anything to collect data on their efforts. I
guess they're just trying to pay the bills.
