SDF recently got rid of the UMN gopher client. I suppose I
can't blame smj too much, the client is very outdated, just
as he opined. On bboard, people where asking to get it back,
and the answer was pretty much a boiler-plate smj style
"No, you're wrong. Deal with it."
The problem is, all of gopher could be deemed outdated. The
majority of the clients are no longer maintained. Many of
the servers aren't really actively maintained. It's just
old stuff, all of it. Yes, Lynx is actively maintained.
But gopher is a feature in lynx, not a focus. But on SDF,
I'm wrong, I already know that, so there's no point in
arguing about it.
I don't know if I like the idea of a day when we just
abandon all this stuff we're doing because it's not some
active project. But hey, SDF is smj's system, not mine or
anyone elses, or even "the group's."
On my own computer, I have the source for the UMN client,
and I have my own changes. I'm not qualified to maintain
the thing for the world, but I maintain it for myself. I've
fixed a bug or two, and I've changed a few other things.
I added color. Nothing impressive or grand, but I keep it
working for me. I also posted the changes on my SDF gopher
hole at one point, though I hardly think it's worth much.
I suppose users here on SDF could do the same... we could
have an SDF version of the UMN client, a fork I suppose.
I'm not sure who would do that though; as stated, I don't
feel qualified.
