7th December 2024 - Wind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The UK has been attacked by weather. Yes, we are under attack. Only
explanation for the 60 mile per hour (~90km/h) gusts! Well that is
locally. There are lots of areas with red alets while I am only in a
yellow alert. Roads have been blocked by many a fallen tree. The M42,
a motorway near by, has been blocked at least twice thanks to traffic
cones being blown all over the joint and some trees blocking 3 lanes.
The pressures are messing with the head. Sort of on the verge of a
migraine all the time. It has been like that all week. Odd and mostly
pointless.
I remain extremely glad to have somewhere secure and wind proof to
wait out this madness. I am also glad this tends to be the limit of
extreme weather in the UK. It is a benign place with middling
temperatures, stable ground and no volcanic activity.
Earlier in the week, we had some crazy downpours which lead to local
flooding everywhere. I was driving out for a Santa run. This is where
a local charity drag a Santa around the streets as a team knock on
doors to collect money. Imagine bright, flashing lights, loud music
and cheesy Santa lingo. It is an interesting fund raising idea but it
does mean going out in all weathers. The schedule is important as you
try to cover streets and people do stay in based on that schedule. The
local flooding was extreme. It was a significant amount of downpour in
30 minutes. It probably was excacerbated by the council not clearing
the leaves. Cue shaking of fist at council money saving. It was
worrying and we were on the edge of cancelling. However, it suddenly
stopped. Thankfully about 10 minutes before we started walking house
to house.
There does seem to be a glut of storms of late. Certainly good news
for fencers (not the sword fighting lot who spring forwards and
backwards) and glazers.
