The trio have an uneventful walk back to the Inn, and settle in for the
night. Fistbeard is able to bind his wound, and feels much better after a
good night's rest.

[bind wounds = 1-3HP, 1d6 = 2 = 1HP healed, plus a night's rest mean full
HP again]

Pre-dawn is clear and cold when the group head out to Dristur's dock and
board the boat, a good sized, two-masted sloop with pleny of deck room.

Dristur accepts the 2GP fare per person, cheerfully humming while he
readies for departure. The first glow of sunrise can be seen to the east as
you set sail south across Lake Mistwater, its name apt as a thick mist
coats the surface of the calm lake to the horizon. You take turns on the
oars, speeding your travel in the light breeze.

The day passes without incident, the sun just passing its zenith as you
approach the River Struhn outlet. The river, deep and swift in these parts,
follows the river road south and after about an hour Dristur anchors the
boat on the western shore. The river road splits off to the southwest.

"This is as far as we go, my friends." Dristur says. "Best of luck, an' if
ya make it back to Hingford alive, look me up an' I'll treat ya to some
ale."

It is early afternoon when you gather your supplies and step off the boat,
onto the river road. The dense Barkwood Forest runs off to the south and
west. You are hungry, but well-rested and anxious to move.

I reckon we should probably rest up a bit, eat, and wait until dusk to make

rather frail nature.  I can still cast spells and fire my darts.

I say we should investigate now whilst it's still light. It would be
better not to walk into a trap in the darkness. Whilst I and the dwarves
can fight in the darkness, I doubt you men will fare so well.

Shall we investigate the scene now? There may be tracks we can follow
and surprise these creatures in the daylight.

I'll take third in line and ready my bow in case we see anything in
range that would benefit from being stuck with an arrow... :)

Fistbeard looks much better from the night before when he was gored by that
boar. His leg is all healed up, bandages removed. "I feel pretty good

night? Are ye crazy?" Fistbeard asks Aleph. "Best to move during the day so
ye can see yer opponent! Now, me and Cord here, we have no problem but yer
fancy torches will give us away. Them goblins and shadow-creatures be on us
like flies attracted to maneure." Fistbeard gives an ages-old analogy as he
states his desire to head out now. "I'll be in tha' middle, after the tough
fighter Paidoboron and the not-so-tough Elf Xavward. so I can heal 'em when
needed and still protect you guys in the rear." Fistbeard states where he'd
like to be in the order of march, and then says, "We'd be better off not
marchin' in line here in the overland. A wedge formation would make more
tactical sense so one good placed spell doesn't take us all out."

You head south. The weather is clear, a slight chill in the air. The maples
and oaks of the dense Barkwood line the edges of the road, at its widest
about 15 feet. The first hint of fall color is evident in the treetops. The
sounds of the river fade away as you march onward, and soon you hear only
the woodland sounds around you. After about two hours of easy marching the
road turns briefly west, narrows slightly and continues south. It is here
you pause briefly - something is not quite right - it is suddently too
quiet and although it is broad daylight you all feel uneasy. By the looks
of the map, you estimate about an hours march should get you to your
destination, with perhaps three hours of daylight left. You all feel very
hungry, realizing you skipped lunch in your haste to arrive before dark.

It is here that you spot some openings onto either side of the road about
100 yards ahead. Perhaps a path crossing the road? If so, it is impossible
to tell from this distance where it might lead.

Actions?

On the other hand, any wasted time gives that which we are looking for a chance
to figure out what we're doing here and sneak away and/or get the jump on us.

Then again, these men were obviously headed somewhere. I wauld assume they're
heading for the path on the other side of the main path. Perhaps there is

The narrow trail forces you to a single file a short distance in and winds
through the dense forest. After a few minutes, you pause as the trail
widens and rises briefly into a clearing. The rise is just enough that you
can't see into the clearing, nor do you hear anything. You do, however, see
smoke as if from a chimney or campfire rising above the trees.

"They could be in league with the robbing monsters, but they could also
just be a group of travelers who are camped here.  I'm not sure I like
this!  We must be on our guard, but not too ready to attack!  Soon, I
think we'll get an answer though.  Let's approach the camp slowly!"

Harrick sheathes his sword, keeping his hand on the hilt, ready to draw at
any moment.

"They could even be friendly, and able to give us some information about
the attacks or whatever happens in this forest. We need to spend the night
somewere anyways. However, better be cautious. We should first have a look
at their camp."

Paidoboron carefully crawls up the hill to peek above it.

I follow slowly behind Paidoboron at a crouch, treading as lightly as
possible, listening for any unusual sounds.

As I follow, I keep my bow at the ready, arrow noched but not drawn back,
just in case.

hold these woods we've walked into a lovely trap!"

From the clearing above, you hear a man yell "Get 'em lads!". You also hear
more commotion now from the clearing above, and men running.

[I've sent an email to spk and csanchez with details on what they see]

** Paidoboron, Fighter **

Paidoboron jumps to his feet, wielding his two-handed sword and facing the
two nearest armored men, his back to Xavward. "Those two for you!" he
shouts to the elf over his shoulder.

Paidoboron will try to get ready for combat as quickly as possible. If
approaching men pace allows, he will throw his axe (I assume it is more at
hand than his harpoon) to the closest one. He will not shout to the other
party members to avoid revealing their position, hoping his combat-stance
gestures (and the shout to Xavward) is enough for the others to realize
what is happening.

Standing back to back with Paidoboron, my bow still ready, I take aim
at the two nearest attackers and let fly with my longbow, hoping to
bring them both down or at least put off their charge.

As soon as I've let fly my arrows, I will shoulder my bow and make
ready my spear and shield, if it won't take extra time. If it will,
I'll wield my spear two-handed.

As I do, I shout loudly to Paidoboron "That thug by the fire is the
key, clearly the leader. This scum will probably flee if he falls.."

The rest of the party runs up the hill as they hear shouting and see
Xavward loose some arrows.

You all can see a small campfire in the center of a clearing, perhaps 30
feet in diameter. A large man in leather armor stands behind the fire pit,
a spiked club in hand.

You also see two similarly armored men running at Paidoboron and Xavward
from either side of the clearing - with swords drawn (four in total). The
two on the left are the two that you saw a short time ago carrying buckets.

Xavward, having his bow at the ready, targets the two to his right with
some well-placed arrows. One man looks down in amazement as the arrow sinks
deep into his chest, but has no time to consider any response as he drops
to the ground, quite dead.

The other arrow finds it's mark in the second bandit's throat. He, too
drops to the ground in a heap.

Paidoboron does not have time to grab his throwing axe, but readies his
sword as the bandits to his left reach him and attack. One finds his mark
and strikes Paidoboron, cutting into his side and drawing blood.
Paidoboron, enraged, presses the attack, but the bandit is able to avoid
his strikes.

The two bandits attacking Paidoborn back off a bit when they notice their
two dead companions - the bandit with the club growls, yelling "Cowards!"
and with that leaps over the fire, running at Xavward and Fistbeard as the
latter moves into the clearing.

The first round is over, Paidobron is wounded with 4/7 HP. The rest of the
party will enter the clearing this round, and can engage the remaining
three bandits in melee if desired.

Xavward will lose a round switching weapons if he decides to stay put.

** Paidoboron, Fighter **

Paidoboron muffles a grunt as one of the swordsmen blows hits him. "Dammit!
Good shooting Xav!". Trying to ignore the pain that starts to spread from
the cut, he strengthens his attack on the two bandits.

"Cord, Harick, beware of the big one!"

Paidoboron will try to get his back towards the edge of the clearing, to
avoid losing sight of any target (including onw with the club) and will
attack one of the enemies close to him, preferably the one furthest away
from the rest of the party (to allow others to target the other one).

Having felled the two nearest opponents, and seeing the "leader"

switch weapons and instead I let fly two arrows towards the
charging bandit leader...

Cord cheers when he enters visibility of the clearing and sees the two bandits
downed by the arrows, but quickly quiets upon seeing one of his own wounded.

He takes one last look behind the party, then [assuming he sees no new
threat(s)] unsheaths his sword and makes his way to the two enemies on the
right, aiming to attack the one closest to the edge of the clearing.

"Ye too, elf." Fistbeard looks over to Xavward and nods. "Hang in there ye

bind his wound!" Fistbeard takes up a flanking position next to Paidoborn
with his heavy mace in hand. "While we wait though, let's give these guys a

Paidoborn while remaining near his side.

Xavward prepares to fire, but the club-wielding bandit is upon him too
quickly! His spiked club arcs down towards Xavward's head, but the Elf is
able to move aside and the blow hits the ground with a thud. Harick is able
to come to Xavward's aid and strikes while the bandit leader is
off-balance, landing a series of blows that wounds the large man. Xavward
curses, realizing he has no melee weapon in-hand.

[Round 2: Xavward initiative roll 1d6=2, Harick 1d6=1, 1d6=3 for bandit
leader, bandit 1d20=5 to-hit, a miss. Harick to-hit 1d20=19 dmg 1d8=5].

Fistbeard and Cord join Paidoboron in engaging the two other bandits, who
continue to attack the wounded fighter. After a flurry of blows, Paidoborn
is again wounded and staggers, looking gravely hurt. Fistbeard and Cord
strike back fiercely. Cord lands a killing blow with his bastard sword,
running the man through the chest, while Fistbeard's mace connects with his
opponent's skull and he collapses in a heap.

[Round 2: Paidoboron inititive 1d6=2, Cord qd6=1, Fistbeard 1d6=1, Bandits
2d6=4,4. Bandits attack 2d20=2,18 dmg 1d6=3. Cord, Fistbeard to-hit
2d20=13,16 dmg 1d8+1=5, 1d6=4].

Aleph is unable to attack, but watches from the edge of the clearing,
looking for an opening for his darts. Curiously, Aleph notices that Halt
has disappeared. Squid charges into the clearing, going to his wounded
master's side.

The wounded bandit leader steps back and sees his dead companions, then
thinks better of the situation and turns to flee into the woods.

"You'll be sorry when Oglak hears of this!" he says as he runs away.

[morale roll 2d6=3, flees]

Xavward fires off two more arrows at the fleeing bandit - both strike true,
and he is clearly hurt but amazingly he is able to stagger into the woods,
disappearing from your view.

[Round 3: Bandit inititive 1d6=4, Xavward 1d6=6, Harick 1d6=1. Xavward
to-hit 2d20=12+3=15, 13+3=16 dmg 2d6=2,2 (+2 attacking a retreating
opponent)]

After a moment, you hear an agonized yell and Halt emerges from the woods,
dragging the body of the bandit leader by the hair, bloody dagger in hand.

[Round 4: Halt, NPC thief, moved to hide in the woods when combat began,
then attacked the leader as he ran by. Surprise attack from behind to-hit
1d20+4=11+4=15, damage=1d4x2=3x2=6].

"Got 'im," Halt says as he dumps the body next to the fire.

All the bandits are slain, but Paidoboron is critically wounded with 1/7
HP.
