You proceed down the opposite path as a group, again the trail narrows to
single-file and continues that way for about 1/4-mile. No persons are
evident but up ahead you hear rushing water.

The trail descends slightly and opens into another large clearing as the
source of the rushing water sound is made clear. You can see a stream
feeding a waterfall to the east (opposite you); the water falls onto a rock
ledge and then into a clear and deep pool of water. The pool (and ledge) is
about 20 feet below you and about the same distance in diameter. An
occasional fish can be seen darting around the pool. The way down is steep
and rocky on all sides. The rocks are moss-covered, wet with the rain or
spray from the waterfall, and appear slick. The path does not continue from
the clearing - only the stream leads away to the east.

*** ALEPH MU ***

"Hmm an impasse.  Still, anyone who has been making camp in the area is
sure to have gone down this way either to fish or to gather fresh water.  I
think it would be worth our while to carefully make our way down and look
for clues.  Perhaps a bootprint or an item fallen from someone's pocket
might avail itself to us. I once heard a tale of a supernatural sleuth who
feigned his own death by hiding in a cave behind a waterfall!  Hearsay most
likely, but this area most certainly deserves some investigation.  Not to
mention, I would love a drink of some cold, fresh water!"

Paidoboron follows Xavward down the slippery rocks. Halt brings up the
rear, but quickly scampers down the rock face and stands on a small patch
of dirt on the edge of the deep pool 20 feet below. The nimble Elf Xavward
stands next to Halt a few minutes later.

Paidoboron has a bit more difficulty, and about half way down he slips and
falls into the pool, his trident splashing in after him. He quickly sinks,
his ring armor, remaining weapons and pack weighing him down.

As if on cue, a spray of water erupts from the base of the waterfall, and a
giant toad leaps into the pool, diving towards Paidoboron. Paidoboron can
be seen below the clear water, struggling to swim to the surface.

As Paidoboron struggles to remove gear and swim to the surface, the toad
swims towards him, gaining surprise and intent on a juicy morsel. His
tougue lashes out, but luckily misses the hapless fighter.

Meanwhile, Xavward prepares to throw his rope and grapnel into the water
and Halt fires off two arrows, one hitting solidly but the other missing as
the toad dives too deep. The toad stops his descent on the bottom of the
pool and turns to face the surface...

Fistbeard throws the rope over the side of the cliff face and yells for his
companions to hold their end. As Harick does so, he climbs down the rope to
join his companions at the pool.

The toad, feeling the arrow strike, surfaces with a single hop and comes to
rest in front of Halt and Xavward, it's body still half in the water. His
tongue is lightning fast as it wraps around Halt's neck and draws him in,
head first! Xavward hears a sickening crunch and Halt is motionless, his
feet hanging out of the Toad's mouth.

Xavward meanwhile, has thrown the grapple in the water and Paidoboron grabs
it. He pulls himself to the surafce, leaving his trident, backpack and
sword belt at the bottom of the pool.

The toad turns and hops into the base of the waterfall, disappearing behind
it, still carrying Halt in his mouth and with an arrow sticking from his
back.

Fistbeard makes it down the rope and joins Xavward at the pool.

narrow - about four feet across, but it quickly widens to the full cave
width of about 15 feet. The cave ceiling is just above you - Paidoboron can
touch it with his outstreched arm. A purplish moss grows in patches on the
walls and ceiling.

In the dim light you see a pile of rocks to your left. The cave itself
narrows at one point about 10 feet in front of you, it is at this part of
the cave that you see what appears to be a net, which has caught the giant
toad. It is squirming to free itself, poor Halt's legs still flopping from

the back of the cave. After the narrowing, it opens up again and about 20
feet back the cave ends. There is a large boulder about 4 feet wide and six
feet tall  set away from the rear wall by about three feet. Off to Cord's
right is a greyish pile of something in a small pool of water, and of
course the purplish moss on the walls an ceilings.

** Xavward, Figher **

I bow my head in sadness at the loss of Halt, despite his...questionable
..activities then scan the cave for any obvious hidden entraces or traps.

Looking curiously at the bag, "It appears to be enchanted - a bag of
holding. I've heard stories of such amongst my people. It seems strange
to put so tiny an object in such a bag! Do not wear it until we know more!

I will follow Cord warily, leeting my eyes adjust to nightvision also.
I'll have my spear at the ready, just in case and move slowly towards
the pile off to the side.

"I will stay here, I can see hardly a thing already, my eyes are not as
good as yours in the dark" I shout to Cord and Xavward as they go depeer
into the cave.

I put my axe on my belt, and look around for anything worth examining. I
address the strange creature: "How do you know so much about this cave?
Been around for long? I can help you look for those eggs, if you want",
attempting to draw its attention from the ring Aleph just found.

Xavward and Cord approach the pile off to their right, at closer inspection
it appears to be a collection of greyish, spherical masses, each about the
size of a fist. They are mostly underwater in the small pool, which is
only about eight inches deep, extending a few feet from the wall. At this
angle, Cord's Dwarvish senses alert him to a dark opening in the cave floor
behind the boulder off to his left.

I whisper to Cord "I'll warrant that those strange objects there are

objects in the dark.

"Do we tell him we've found them? Perhpas they have some other
properties of which we are not yet aware that makes them so desirable?"

I'll then advance slowly towards the opening in the floor Cord has
discovered, spear at the ready.

"Cord - perhaps we should check this opening first. I do not wish to be
surprised from behind in here!"

Ye need ta talk?" Fistbeard asks after Cord and Xavward takes their moment

his fellow dwarf, allowing his eyes to adjust to the dark as well as he
proceeds forward. "Think we can meybbe push that boulder so we can check
that opening?" Fistbeard asks Cord and Xaward.

The noise from the waterfall fades to the background as you converge
towards the back of the cave. It is mostly quiet here, with an occasional,
echoing drip of water heard from somewhere. The smell of the frog
overpowers any other scents that might be in the air.

As Xavward approaches the hole in the floor, he notices that it appears to
be a tunnel entrance, sloping down and away under the back cave wall and
appearing just wide enough for one person to fit through. He can't see much
else, even his keen Elvish vision has limits in the dark.

Fistbeard, once he gets closer to the back of the cave, doesn't think
moving the boulder will be necessary.

Cord whispers back, "I don't see any reason to fuss about these eggs, if
that's what they are. The creature wants 'em? It can have 'em."

As Cord and the party approach, Cord second guesses this decision. "Fellows,
has anyone noticed that the creature hasn't followed us this far? Maybe, I'm
thinking, we should leave this alone and get back outside. Something isn't
right, here."

Looking at the boulder, he continues. "Does anyone else think that, maybe,
this boulder was sealing off this hole?"

Cord looks for evidence of his theory.

"The deep is not a safe place for this one. This one found the eggs

smell us already. This one has seen the deep ones... The tall-ones should
be careful.

This one wants to know, why are these in the waterfall? Where are these

the ring back in the bag and the bag in his pack. Hurridly, he re-equips

Squid lights some torches, and Xavward takes one, getting close enough to
the hole to toss it in. He does so - the torch illuminates the hole and a
steep, rocky tunnel wide enough for one person to descend at a time. It is
almost vertical, but angled slightly away from you, so as to go out of
sight under the back cave wall.

You hear the torch hit the tunnel floor a few times on the way down, then
it sputters and goes out as it comes to rest a second or two later. You
hear scurrying from below in the distance, and the ever-present drip of
water.

foot section of hemp rope.  He said that he had been tricked into buying
it, that he had been promised a "legal buzz."  The edges are singed, but
other than that this has helped me out many a time."

I remove the rope from my pack and offer it to the group.  In doing so, as
I bend my head, I whisper to my comrades:

"This critter seems quite eager to be of assistance.  What if its motives

I propose we just forget about this place and leave. There's something not
right in the air."

He turns his attention to the creature.

"And what, exactly, do you want out of all of these business? I'll be honest,

This one wants to remember how it came to be here...
This one has dreams of once being a tall-one.
This one cannot remember how it got here. Now it eats
the slimy-ones eggs, traps the deep-ones and hides in the cave.

The dreams led this one here.

This one does not know what it wants yet.
This one does not even know what this one is..."

To everyone

"Give this one the firey-stick. This one can climb through
the hole to the deep-ones along the ceiling and looky-look.
The deep ones have many treasures but they do not like this one."
