Paidoboron leans against a tree, breathing heavily. "Don't worry, Squid, I
won't be seeing the Halls of the Gods today." He looks at his bleeding
side, grinning. "Some of your bandages would be handy, Firstbeard. And some
wine, if you had."

Switching from bow to spear and shield, just in case any more bandits
appear out of the close-by woods, I'll carefully inspect the corpose
of the bandit leader with Halt. At the very least, I'll see if I can
retrieve my arrows from his back.

"Fistbeard - can you do something for Paidoboron? It looks like those
common theives landed a lucky strike."

*** Fistbeard, Cleric ***

Fistbeard nods over to Xavward, "Aye, we be lucky he still with us."
Fistbeard examines Paidoborn's wounds, "Any deeper and we might not be so
lucky." Fistbeard then turns his attention to Paidoborn, "Bandages? I got
one better for ye, my friend." He then produces his wooden holy symbol and
begins to pray. "Most powerful $DIETY, We thank ye for keeping 'em with us
during our fight, and ask ye for yer divine power to heal and bind
Paidoborn's wounds so he may once again fight." Fistbeard casts CURE LIGHT
WOUNDS on Paidoborn at the completion of his prayer. "How's that feel?
Gonna be stiff for a while, but should be much better. Are ye still
bleeding?" Fistbeard checks Paidoborn. If Paidoborn is at or below 5hp,
Fistbeard will also BIND WOUNDS on him. If not, Fistbeard thinks he'll be
alright after a good night's rest.

Cord cleans his sword off with rags torn from the bandits' clothes, then looks
around at his party members.

"Looks like you have him taken care of", he says, motioning to wound curing
that's happening. "Let me know if I can help."

He then circles the edge of the clearing, scouting for anyone else who might
be hiding near by, sword sheathed but ready at any time. While he does, he
speaks to the others.

"What next? Surely these bandits were not that poor man's attackers. They must
still be out there."

Halt and Xavward examine the bandit leader and discover a small, leather
pouch tucked inside the chest plate of his leather armor. Inside are 8
small gemstones, they appear to be rubies.

Fistbeard summons the power of $DEITY and sees Paidoboron relax a bit
[1d6+1=1+1=2 HP]. He then sets about binding wounds [1d4=1] and Paidoboron
rests a bit easier still.

[Wow, the dice gods are not looking on Paidoboron favorably today!]

Cord circles the edge of the clearing, spotting no other signs of bandits
on the loose. He does, however, spot an odd patch of fresh dirt on the
outer edge of the clearing, to the northeast of the firepit. The bandit
bedrolls, buckets and foodstuffs are scattered about the camp, trampled
underfoot during the battle. There is a small shovel and coil of rope near
the firepit.

Paidoboron has 4/7 HP.

"Ugh, still aches! But it feels much better. Thank you Firstbeard. I think
I will be better after some good sleep." Paidoboron stands and tries
walking slowly, to avoid opening the healing wounds. "Those bandits almost
knocked me off, they were faster than I expected!".

"I wonder what they were doing here, though too late to ask them I guess.
It is getting dark, I say we find a place to spend the night and we explore
the surroudinds first light tomorrow. I will prefer not moving too much
until my wounds get better."

** ALEPH MU **

Stunned by the the speed of the skirmish that has taken place and by the
instinctive abilities of his friends, Aleph says in almost a reverent
whisper, "This adventuring business is quite different from what I had
imagined."  Not wanting to appear too shaken, he exerts an obvious
ammount of effort to appear nonplussed and makes his way to the shovel
with the fresh earth.  He tosses the rope in his bag and begins to dig.
"It may be a corpse, it may be gold, may even be a makeshift privy, but
these bandits intrigue me, and I want to learn as much as I can about them
before we head anywhere else."

Aleph sets about digging in the fresh patch of dirt. After about 10
minutes, his hands dirty and back aching from his almost comical use of a
small shovel, he hits something hard and clears the dirt away to see the
top of a wooden chest.

head over cautiously to where the digging is taking place.

I will collect the rope on my way and inspect it, watching out for
traps in the bandit camp at all times.

"Interesting find magic-user. Halt, come take a look at this chest.
What do you think? Is it likely to be trapped?"

You pull the chest out of the ground and examine it. It is about a foot
tall, two feet wide and 8 inches deep. It is made of wood banded with iron,
and is locked via an inset hasp made of brass.

Halt examines the lock, but is unable to make sense of it.

"Maybe there is a key lying around here somewhere?" the rogue says.

I'll examine the bandits' bedrolls to see if there is anything
appearing to be a key for the chest.

"Yes, we may soon lose the light. The dwarves and I will not have
too much trouble lest we have visitors in the night but you men will
be little use in the darkness. I suggest we re-light the fire the
bandits obviously had. It would be even more obvious that something
is wrong if we don't, covered in our travelling cloaks it will be
difficult for someone to realise we are not those they expect until it
is too late."

have no idea what this group was about but there seems to be part of
something bigger, so I will not be surprised if we got some visitors
tonight. But we must hide this corpses first or it would be too obvious
what happened here."

Paidoboron will move the bodies of the dead bandits out of the clearing and
hide them beneath some bushes. Then he will prepare to sleep near the fire,
keeping his sword close.

"I will have the last watch, just before dawn. These scratches will do

Having been keeping watch this whole time as everyone was busy healing and
digging up chests, Cord volunteers,

"I'll take the first watch with someone. I'm still rushing from the battle, so
I'll have no trouble staying up for a while. Perhaps I'll keep searching the
grounds for the key to that chest while I'm at it."

Cord plans to quietly circle the camp about halfway between the center and the
tree line, obviously avoiding obstacles (like resting companions). In the mean
time, he'll lightly kick around in the dirt looking for the key, in case it
was dropped or lost.

"I recommend that someone search those bodies again. We might have missed
something."

With that, he prepares for his shift as watchman.

You clear the camp of bodies and settle in for the night. Cord scours the
camp during his watch but is not able to find the key to the chest.
Fistbeard prays to $DEITY and refreshes his memory of the all-important CLW
spell. The rest of the night passes without incident, as typical it is far
too quiet. Clouds have moved in overnight and a cold drizzle wakes you at
dawn. Paidoboron feels a bit better after the much-needed rest [5/7 HP].

As I move around the edge, I'll pick up any wood I can to add to the

Paidoboron (having the last watch) wanders around the camp in the morning
breeze, waiting for the others to completely wake up.

"Good morning! I feel much better today, these wounds seem to be almost
closed."

He shakes his head. "Xavward is right, I do not think the key is here. The
leader mentioned some Oglak, maybe his master, and he might have it."

Looking towards the path the party came in, as if trying trying to see the
road, Paidoboron says "If this path ends here, it probably continues at the
other side, after is crosses the main road. I would like to know where it
leads to, these badits here were up to nothing clean, I am sure".

fine. All ye need now is a good drink!" Fistbeard exclaims. "I need one

share his enthusiasm.  To add a dramatic emphasis, he grabs one of his

You break camp and head out, the morning's drizzle and grey skies still
persisting. You make it back to the road and can proceed on your original

Cord takes one more look at the chest before bringing up the rear of the group
heading back to the main road.

"We can stop here again for the chest on our way back, once the job is done.
Provided no one else comes along first."

Once back at the main road, Cord readdresses his group,

"I agree that we should take a look down the other side path. However, I think
we should all go instead of sending a scout. Something just doesn't smell right."

as it is.
