I am writing this post from an old PC i salvaged last year from my attic,
a Pentium 133 Mhz sporting 32 MB RAM, currently running FreeDOS. Why do i
do this? Well, i am currently in a mental state that longs for simplyfication,
reduction in every aspect of life and a bit nostalgia for simpler times.
I had this system already up and running last year, but screwed everything
up back then when i attempted to install OS/2... well, shame on me for
not making backups i guess. So, back at the last weekend i installed
everything again and after a couple hours i had everything at a state
where i could describe this system as fairly daily-driveable. A thing that
always fascinates me is the responsiveness of those old systems, i mentioned
in a previous post the same thing about RiscOS: Somehow systems that are
- on the number side of things - massively inferior to todays hardware feel
at the same time much more agile...
Well, i think my "adventure" of moving away from the smartphone that is now
going on for nearly a month (i guess) is fitting in the same category:
Simplyfication. And so far its a complete success... i have completely lost
the habit of having the phone always on the desk, always in reach for
checking mails, messages and to doomscroll, there are even days when the
phone completely stays in my pocket. And my social and work circle is
completely fine with CALLING when they want to contact me or sending an
email if the matter is not THAT urgent.
So far... i am fairly happy with the state of things.
