Ah, the little things your forget with "helpful" systems. Part of my
reason for digging a gopher hole was to get back to a simpler web.
"Wait!" I hear you cry. "Didn't you do that with your Gemini capsules?"
Well, yes but no. Gemini was a desire for a simpler internet, and it
was also the first time I had spun up a dedicated serevr exposed to the
internet. There is also a distinctly easier learning curve to get
content and links working than with Gopher.
However, I kept wondering about the widespread adoption of the protocol.
Was it the tool people would first look to if the mainstream HTML based
World Wide Web became unstable or inoperable? Also, was there a large
body of documentation for helping less technical new comers use it? In
both cases I found myself answering "No" and so, like a pebble sinking
slowy through the murk of the internet I finally found myself on the
long forgotton bed of it all, Gopher.
Not to say I don't still post on Gemini and the WWW, but diversification
builds resilience, and we all need more smolweb hobbies... so here we are.
That's a long post to excuse the fact my first phlog post a month ago
didn't show up as intended because I managed to completely misconfigure
the setup. Ah well, all fixed now. Onwards and downwards!
