A forced farewell: 1916
-----------------------

A forced farewell sung by an engine's sigh,
They bid good cheer to those they love and leave.
Their hearts whispering a final goodbye -
Helped in their going by a gentle breeze.

Duty calls, and the demands of war cleave
Apart each from each trying not to cry.
From threads of fear bravely they weave
A forced farewell sung by an engine's sigh.

The papers tell them that victory is nigh,
That the war will be won with almost ease.
Faining belief that they'll do but not die
They bid good cheer to those they love and leave.

This is a war in which only some believe,
But for country's sake they know they must try
To kill and maim the nations foes. To peace
Their hearts whispering a final goodbye.

They've gone to fields in which so many lie,
And for whom many more must surely grieve.
Hopes relinquishes with their departing cries,
Helped in their going by a gentle breeze,

                         A forced farewell.
