Hello everybody, and WELCOME HOME, VIKKI AND KATE!!! We are so
thankful for the wonderful memories God gave you :o)
Now we can get on with planning our 70th Birthday Bash/Family
Reunion Shindig Extrordinaire! We are really looking forward to
our time with all of you. For sake of planning, here is some
logistical info. and miscellaneous suggestions.
See table--attached as well as pasted below. The travel info I
have is in black; the suggestions are in blue.
We are flexible as to where we are--Leadville or Westy. We are
happy to sleep in sleeping bags, on the floor, at a hotel,
whatever.
I suggest that we meet Scott in Denver so that we don't have to
spend one of our days with him "reunioning" with us packing up
and traveling from the cabin to Westy.
VIKKI, MOM, and DAD--since you all are "on the ground" at our
location, I would appreciate you sketching in some details for
our reunion. Of course, my desire is not to burden anybody (we
were all born with that gene I think!), and I am more than happy
to plan, discuss, schedule, etc. I just need to be told that
that is needed if it is. Or feel free to volunteer me for
anything, or delegate anything to me.
Misc. suggestions for Leadville:
-canoeing/playing at the lake
-playing in the woods/hammock
-hiking
-rafting
-flashlight tag
-smores/hotdogs on the fire (or on fire, as the case may be!)
-playing by a river
Misc. suggestions for Denver:
-swimming
-John tells Herman stories (Vikki and Kate discussed this on their
trip, Vikki remembering that Herman was often wandering around at
the bottom of the ocean...)
-Sound of Music (BDT)
-sports game--soccer or baseball
-Broomfield Bay
-Natural History Museum
-Zoo
-Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory Tour
-Boulder Creek Path Hike, Picnic

Dear Sarah,
Thanks for writing. I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner.
I will write more later, but it looks like a fun list you've drawn up. I
read it to the kids and got a positive reaction, though "want-to-dos" and
"neutrals" varied from person to person. I was a little surprised that the
Boulder Dinner Theatre/Sound of Music got a very favorable reaction from
almost everyone. Could you or Vikki look into possible dates?
Love,
David

Sarah
PS Vikki called yesterday. She is putting together possible
activities
that need advanced tickets (e.g. baseball game), then she's going
to send it
to all of us to give her a head count for how many are really
interested.
Good to hear from you!

Dear David,
I'm really glad you guys like the Sound of Music idea,
because Dad made reservations for all of us for
Saturday the 11th!
In addition, there are a few things we've been talking
about or considering when we're all here that would
require some advance planning and/or reservations. By
no means do we have to do any or all of these things,
but if there is sufficient interest in any of them, we
need to get them slotted on the calendar. Would you
let me know who wants to participate in the following
activities? (Sarah's family - please respond also!)
-Rockies baseball game
-rafting
-horseback riding
Looking forward to seeing y'all soon. Take care.
Love,
Vikki

Thank you, Vikki, for coordinating this!
On any activity, we all agree that we would be happy to join in

Kate--yes
Lauren--no, unless everyone is going
Scott or Sarah--one of us would like to go

(Demarest total is probably 3)
(NOTE: If this becomes an all boy event and Scott is there, make it 2 :o)
RAFTING: Mark--yes
Lauren--definite yes--her first choice from the list
Kate--definite yes--her first choice from the list
Sarah--yes
Scott--yes if he's there
(Demarest total is probably 4)
HORSES: Mark--no, unless everyone is going
Lauren--yes
Kate--yes

WOW, David, this is WAY cool! We especially like our new group name (before Sc comes)...SaKLaMk (we say it "Sa-kuh-LAW-mik") Kind of like a tribe or something. With Scott...Sa-skuh-LAW-mik. Nice ring to it!
Let's see...Mom and Dad will be JL..."jail"?...maybe this system needs some more work :) (posted by Sa 7/2/07)

Happy Independence Day! I'm glad Sa and K have found this site and are already putting it to good use. I was a little worried that I hadn't been able to post enough explanation of how to use the wiki before leaving for Singapore (I'm typing from my hotel room now). I shouldn't have underestimated the intellectual prowess and technological savvy of our clan. Let's keep building the wiki and checking for the latest updates (check RecentChanges). Looking forward to seeing you all. -- D 2007/7/5 03:02
** -- Sa
Thanks for fixing this, David :)
FYI, I am having my gall bladder removed on Friday. Mom and Dad arrive tomorrow to help out. I appreciate your prayers. --Sa 2007/7/4 7:18 PDT
** -- D
We are certainly praying that your operation will go smoothly and successfully.
If K or the other kids are interested I can create separate user IDs for them, though at this point it doesn't make much difference if they keep sharing your ID. -- D 2007/7/5
** -- D
Attention JLSaV: I'd like to post here some of the e-mail we've been exchanging over the last couple months about reunion plans. I think it will be useful to have a single source where we can reference past discussions as we develop plans. Does anyone have any objections? -- D 2007/7/5
** -- J
No objections! --J 2007/7/5

I'm really excited to see all of you guys! This is going to be sooooo fun. :)

Works for me too. A few more things to throw out to the group:
>1. I am working on finding coordinating shirts of some kind for the whole group to wear on picture day. I was thinking we would pick one or two base colors to wear on bottom (i.e. - khaki, black, denim, white, navy). What common colors do your families have for bottoms?
>2. I know Mom (excuse me, L) has done some work on coordinating meals and splitting up the workload. Is this something for which it might be helpful to have a separate page on this website? That way we'll all be in the loop and ready to go. Or, does it make more sense to use the master calendar? Just thoughts, let me know what you think.
See y'all soon! -Love, v 2007/7/7

Singapore last week, Tokyo this week, France and Belgium next week. Whew!
Responding to V above:
-1. I would be surprised if there's any color clothing all seven of us have in common. We're planning on doing some shopping, so pick the uniform and we can get seven sets while we're at it.
-2. Good idea. I'd been thinking of a few meals we'd like to do for whoever's gathered at the time, as well as some we'd like to eat. I'll start a new page, MealPlans, to collect meal ideas, volunteer chefs, and possible dates.
-- D 2007/7/12
** -- K
L is on vacation here visiting us and she will report very soon. L has many many meals already planned as well as KP helpers. Stay tuned!
--K 2007/7/12
** -- K
We still need to decide if we are having the BBQ at the pool for J+L's birthday party. If we're celebrating at the house, we don't need to reserve anything, but if we're celebrating at the pool or elsewhere, we need to make reservations.
--K for Sa 2007/7/12
** -- La
V--are skirts okay for the picture outfits?
--La 2007/7/12
** -- La
The Demarests all have khaki bottoms to wear for the pictures. (All except for Mk, but he and Sc will go shopping soon.)
--La 2007/7/12
*July 13, 2007 Friday
** -- D
If the Demarests all have khaki bottoms then they should be wearing more clothing when they go sun bathing, or they need to wipe better. ;^)
Slightly more seriously, by the powers vested in me as patriarch-apparent of the family, I declare that skirts are definitely okay. T prefers skirts. -- D 2007/7/13 (FRIDAY!) (from the bullet train heading home after a week in Tokyo)
** -- V
I agree with the skirts decree issued by the "patriarch-apparent" (hereafter, Pa). I think skirts, shorts, pants, capris are all fine from my perspective. Does it improve the hit rate for the Japan Meyers if we go with khaki or white on bottom? Also, is anyone offended if we mix it up like that?
In response to K for Sa, I'm ok with the BBQ either at home or at the pool. Any preferences?
Pa -- I'm impressed with the travel schedule you are keeping. I, too, write on Friday, but from same office I see every day, working through lunch yet again.... -- V 2007/07/13
** -- Sa
To D: Hahahahahahahahaha...plop. We're all laughing our heads off over here. :) We definitely do not care about mixing up the color of our bottoms. But we might not have time to turn them white. OK, enough of that...
Sa's big accomplishment for today was driving for the 1st time in a week so we won't talk about travel just yet.
We think that we should reserve the BBQs at the pool to keep our options open. It might be nice to have the party there.
--Sa 2007/7/13
*July 14, 2007 Saturday
** -- D
Blue denim is about the closest we could come to a common color, so pick out what you think is nice and we'll include something to match on our shopping list.
BBQ location: Is carrying everything to and from the pool not a problem?
Sa: I take it your operation went well? -- D 2007/7/14
*July 15, 2007 Sunday
** -- V
I can go with blue denim or khaki as the options. How does that strike everyone? -- V 2007/07/15

** Reservation events follow-up -- D
(Japan national holiday Sea Day)
After incorporating our old e-mail into this page, I've been rechecking that all activity ideas that have come up here have been recorde on BrainStorming.
The following three items I recall talking with J on the phone, but what is the final status?
-Rockies baseball game (MasterSchedule shows confirmed for Aug12)
-rafting (MasterSchedule shows confirmed for Aug08)
-horseback riding (MasterSchedule shows proposed for Aug10)
** --K
Denim or khaki is great with us! Are you saying that we can wear either, V?
And Sa is feeling better everyday!

** Thanks, Mom --D
(Guess what. I'm typing this post on a public Internet terminal in the Frankfurt, Germany airport while waiting for my flight to Lyon, France.)
Thanks, Mom, for updating all the schedule information here on the wiki. It looks like a lot of thought has gone into the schedule and it looks like a lot of fun. Looking forward more than ever now.
One proposal: If it's possible, and it's not a food anyone has problems with, I'd like to make spaghetti with meat sauce for everyone. It's a favorite meal in Japan (at least at a certain home) and I'm curious to get everyone's opinion on how close my sauce is to L's recipe. I notice there is no menu planned for Aug. 15 dinner, though Sc is scheduled to leave that day. Shall I do spaghetti that day, or is another day better?
Also, acknowlege clothing color for pictures. We'll either bring or buy khaki or blue denim bottoms for DSFMJpTH. -- D
** Response to D Reservations Follow Up
The tickets to the Rockies game are already purchased. The Cubs are in town, so I thought it best to get those earlier rather than later.
Rafting and horseback riding are just proposed days since there was some interest. We need to get a count on rafting before we can reserve. Horseback riding will be somewhat dependent on the schedule for coming back down from the mtns.
And, in response to K, yes, I'm saying either khaki or denim is ok.
Look forward to seeing you all soon. -- V

** Journaling --D
Days full of blessing and fun have been flying by. I have tried to write about our passage from Japan to the U.S. (not yet finished) and record highlights of each day in journal sections on the day pages.
As more of us gather, I encourage anyone who'd like to record a memory to add their own journal section to the day page, or add a link to a new page if you feel expansive.

While I have felt "flooded" with things to do this weekend, it turns out the rest of you had a flood all your own...from the washing machine at the cabin! Well, I think my flood has subsided, and all that's left is a good night sleep, last minute packing, get to the airport, and we're on our way! The kids have been gems as I've done last minute errands, finished up grading, and tried to stay after a score of odd jobs that just can't wait till I get home (you know, laundry, packing...). I hope we can have some time to relax together en route, maybe with some card games or reading aloud :o) Mostly we're all REALLY excited to see all of the Meyers!!! Watch out Denver, here we come!
PS For any who care, Scott is bringing the paper products for birthday dinner on 8/14 when he drives on 8/10.
