The threat of disruptions from Anonymous group's planned attacks on
Guy Fawkes Day (November 5) 2014 inspired me to actually make a
backup of most of my computerized information for the first time
since starting the EGBU project over the 3-day weekend Oct. 31 -
Nov. 4, 2014.
Although almost all of the work was done manually, the process
provided insights that will hopefully make the EGBU goal of a largely
automated backup process realizable in the near future.
* Backup media
a. 16-gigabyte flash memory stick (USB) x 2
I originally thought one 16G stick would be enough to hold all
necessary backup data, then duplicate backup data to the 2nd
stick for added security. However, backup of fasus proved
impossible (was unable to learn from F if all files need
backup).
b. 3-terabyte xternal hard disk drive (Seagate)
Purchased to store all backup data. Switch between leni and
fasus.
Currently holds all device and site backups. (? Except for
akamaru (backup on medium a.)?)
Need to investigate:
- Restore test
- Sharing between multiple devices (currently leni and fasus
backup files in separate folders created by different backup
S/W)
- Support for backup of tablet PCs and smart phones (via
wireless?)
c. Static media
Originally envisioned copying backup data to CD-/DVD-ROM for
maximum stability (and possibly also for sharing photos/videos),
but currently using medium b. instead.
d. Other storage
During the backup process ended up with copies of all backup
data on both leni hard disk and SDF MetaArray account.
MetaArray copies are permanent, but leni copies can probably be
deleted to save space (though it is convenient (necessary?) to
have the leni copies for staging to ext. hard disk b.
