ARNOLD ARBORETUM
(Posted 2011-05-17 18:05:23 by ArchPaladin)

This past weekend my wife and I went to the Arnold Arboretum [
http://arboretum.harvard.edu/ ] [arboretum.harvard.edu], which is a
research arboretum maintained by Harvard.  We went there as part of a tour
offered by one of my grad school's former chairs of the herbal department.
She takes herbalists (and other interested people) on a tour of the
facility to show them different plants used in Chinese herbal medicine.  It
gives the participants a chance to see what these plants look like when
they are not cut and dried and presents some more realistic grounding to
the medicine we practice.

I recommend the Arboretum to all who want to go - herbalist or not.  The
facility is huge and contains an extensive variety of plants that you don't
find anywhere local.  It is well maintained and has a garden-esque feel to
it.  You would barely know its a research facility if it weren't for the
little tags on the plants and trees telling you what they were and where
they came from.  I heard from people who live close by that it is commonly
used for sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter.  In other seasons
it is a pleasant walk with beautiful scenery.

We didn't bring the camera, which was a poor decision.  Otherwise I would
have pictures to share.  Now you'll just have to go and see it for
yourself.
