ing Productions * [email protected] __________________________________________________________________ Note: Some of this stuff may be old, but if you are not in Hawaii, you probably haven't heard of these. Also this publication now returns to its quarterly format as I have not had enough time or news to devote to it as a monthly. ------------------------------------------------------------------ KITV CHANNEL 4 CARRIES ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL It's that time of the year agin in Hawaii, when the annual Merrie Monarch Festival Hula Competition beams live out of Hilo and into homes all over Hawaii. The following 2 nights the station will be airing the "kahiko" (ancient) and "'auana" (modern) hula segments on Friday and Saturday starting at 6:PM. The Kauai Community Radio station will be called KKCR and will be broadcast on the frequencies of 90.9 and 91.9 mhz on the FM dial. The station's 2 frequencies will establish island-wide coverage for the new entity. KKCR is expected to go on the air by the end of the year. The station is being run by the non-profit Kekahu Foundation. The foundation can be accessed at this URL: http://www.cruzio.com/~kusp/janet.html
--------------- INTERNET RADIO HAWAII SEEKING LISTENER SUPPORT Hawaii's first all internet radio station, I.R.H. is having a fund drive to help keep the operation on the air. The station which "broadcasts" (a better descrption would be "webcasts") out of Hawaii's H4 website (http://www.hotspots.hawaii.com) has been a very popular stop for afficiandos and fans of local Hawaiian music... especially those away from Hawaii, where access to the music is very scarce. Rabbett says that about 6,000 people listen to the broadcasts every week. He is now asking for listener help in order to keep I.R.H. going. For more information, drop by and read up on how can help I.R.H. The URL is: http://www.hotspots.hawaii.com/IRH-home.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ NEW STATIONS SLATED TO BECOME RADIO ACTIVE Over the next few months, a number of new radio stations are scheduled to start broadcasting. In addition to KKCR (see above), the following
e radio active. KORL 99.5 FM on Oahu was supposed to start broadcasting a mix of contemporary, island and Japanese music on April 1st. Apparently this target date has been pushed back, since the station is yet to sign on. The target audience for the new station is the Japanese visitor market. KUAU 1570 AM out of Maui is scheduled to be radio active as soon as its owner returns from a mainland trip. I understand this station has been sending out a test signal from time to time over the past few months. KKOA 107.7 FM in Hilo has delayed its debut (which was supposed to be in January) while it undergoes some changes to its facilities. Once on the air, the station is supposed to be broadcasting a country music format. KPBL 104.3 FM in Kailua on the island of Oahu is supposed to be on the air in "60 days" according to its owners, operators of KRTR 96 FM. Its format has not been made public. ------------------------------------------------------------------ KGMB TV LAUNCHES MORNING NEWS

The new acquisition will give the company the top
V) classic rock operation. ------------------------------------------------------------------ SHAKEOUT IN THE MORNING RADIO AIRWAVES In recent months several changes have occured in the hotly contested morning drive slots at Honolulu radio stations. Personalities and shows have once again come and gone from local stations. Among the significant: Michael Qseng: Gone from KRTR 96 and no one knows where he will surface. His web page is still up and can be accessed at http://hisurf.aloha.com/QsengStuff/Qseng.html Brock Whaley: Back at KPOI 97.5 FM, now playing "modern/alternative rock" in the mornings. He was formerly with KPOI when the station was a classic rock entity. Charly Espina: Longtime morning matron at KPOI, she is now with the Aloha Morning Show, teamed with Brickwood Galuteria at KCCN FM & AM... This time she's doing the news and playing Hawaiian music. The apparent sign-off was due to the new owners moving the studio facilities. Since that day, the station has not signed back on with its Filipino music and information format.
------------------ KFSH NOW KNWB IN HILO KFSH radio has changed its call letters to KNWB. The new call letters reflect the name of the station's new owners, New West Broadcasting Company.
