An idea that I've been toying with for more than a year in a musical
context is this:

An infinite variety of patterns can be described as a simple pair of
frequencies: a waveform frequency, and a sampling frequency.
Additionally, a phase or offset parameter could be added, although
it's not strictly necessary.
