Seem silly but most plastic surgery seems silly to me. You're
  technically an infante until you are 18 years old in the USA,
  and similar definitions exist worldwide..

  ...kids can't choose school. Can't choose lots of things. So, a
  skin flap gets snipped off. Botched surgeries happen. It's a
  cultural tradition, codified in religious texts but I fold
  together religion into cultural norms. Nothing special about
  religion; it's culture.

  They also snip off a piece of tail when it shows up on a baby as
  well as extra toes and fingers. Probably a number of babies die
  from that too, although in that case, the doctors just don't
  tell the parents because parents want to believe their baby is
  perfect, and doctors play along with it.
