As Pokemon has been losing to Yo-Kai Watch, they did a smart
move here, being their 20th anniversary as well, by making the
announcement of the upcoming game into a nostalgia trip, showing
people all of the fun people have had through the decades and
giving the tiniest glimpse of the upcoming artwork. Before, they
were able to show a few new characters in dramatic scenes - and
I'm sure they will as game development continues. But for the
first announcement, this was smart, low-key and showing the
strength of time and commitment on their side. I'm sure as the
year progresses, they'll return to their normal style of
announcement. They're going to have it tough against Yo-Kai
Watch, which is by an competing company and is really doing
things right. So it'll be interesting to see what happens. These
are people who build significant things into people's childhoods
that carry into their adulthoods in some form, an almost
invisible hand of influence among millions of people.
