^You've noticed how food prices have gone up over the last few
  years?
75% of the reason? Corn. In 2005, the US Congress required
corn-based ethanol be blended into fuels. The result? Food for
animals became more expensive. The food from the animals became
more expensive. Nobody expected that but everything makes sense
when you are looking backwards. Now you know - a good idea that
is supposed to "fix a problem once and for all" usually has
unintended consequences. Be flexible; every problem has more
  than one solution.^
