^The Hairdresser with Bad Hair Syndrome: When dealing with a
specific problem, an excellent technique is to, instead solve an
even BIGGER problem that your specific problem is a part of.
It's often easier. Scientists do this all of the time, as do
  problem solvers the world over.

It has its drawbacks though. As a bona-fide "know-it-all"
personality, I see this in myself: it's easier to solve
everybody else's problems than to solve our own. I call it the
Hairdresser with Bad Hair Syndrome. You might be cutting my hair
next, so please don't be mad. I like my hair.^
