I went to a public school AND private school in New Jersey.
Suburbia. My 6th grade world history book had clean-shaven white
rosy cheeked cavemen and women that looked Barbie dolls. I won't
even go INTO how they taught electricity wrong. I spent SO many
years unlearning and relearning post school. Ugh. Still working
on it. So, it's systemic. The teachers, the school environments,
the textbooks... heck, even the existence of schools as they
currently operate is just... blech. The private school had
smaller classes though, which was very very good so there was a
chance for discussion and debate over things that seemed not
  quite right.
