What *might* make it trickier for older-minded (not _older_
because there are plenty of young people who share the
older-minded thinking) - it's not an age issue per say...

... is goals that are complimentary yet might be extreme to
those who are still babies to the concept.
  [1]http://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/i-am-jazz/ - Jazz, who is a
wonderful girl with an amazing family who is lucky to be able to
get puberty-stopping hormones and all the marvels that modernity
can bring to help her out, until she eventually becomes old
enough to design on gender resassignment surgery.

However, this can also prove to be confusing to people who have
a standard binary notion of gender when it comes to their kids
or grandkids or nieces and nephews.

"Boy play with dolls. Will he be transgender?"

So it raises the stakes for those who would have had enough of a
  problem with the "straight/gay" issue.

In the end, it's a "good thing" I think, but I feel kinda bad
for those who still adhere to the old boy/girl
roleplaying=fact... when... _most_ differences are culturally
assigned... with a few key features (and perhaps a _few_
estrogen or testosterone fueled cognitive differences but not
  many).
