He's right. The electromagnetic (EM) fields have to go a certain
  way for the power grid to work. if they get disturbed (like
  reversing the polarity making North become South and swapping
  directions), not only would we lose the power grid, but all
  electronics would be unuseable. (it happened in Canada a couple
  of years ago when sunspot activity destroyed the power grid for
  a few unlucky square miles of towns. The sunspots shot out a
  HUGE solar flare that was both energy and magnetic - messed it
  all up. Earth is technically within the Sun's reach, which is
  really pretty freaky. "
